23.01.2022 It was two discoveries of Francoise Barre-Sinoussi and her partner Luc Montagnier that unlocked the world's understanding of AIDS and allowed the development of drugs that could prevent or manage the disease. They discovered both the existence of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and it's role in causing the disease AIDS. With the knowledge that AIDS was caused by a virus a range of Antiretroviral drugs were developed such that the once universally fatal disease is n...ow survivable and manageable. Francoise Barre-Sinoussi and Luc Montagnier received the Nobel Prize in 2008 for their work. Francoise Barre-Sinoussi is a Rotarian.

21.01.2022 Last night's Rotary Zoom meeting saw members behatted in a range of fancy, formal, flattering and frivolous head wear in honor of the Australian Rotary Health project Lift the Lid on Mental Illness. One in five Australians will suffer some form of mental illness during their lives. This means that practically everyone will have some experience with mental illness either directly or through the experience of close family members. Lifting the lid on mental illness is not just... about supporting research into causes, prevention and treatment of mental illness but it is also about de-stigmatizing a group of illnesses that are both common and impactful in the lives of most Australians. To find out more about Lift the Lid go to https://australianrotaryhealth.org.au//campa/lift-the-lid/ and consider donating or finding other ways to support this initiative.

21.01.2022 Ada, Countess of Lovelace was a pioneer in early mathematical and engineering concepts that laid the path for the modern computer. Her work with Charles Babbage on his Analytical Machine saw her recognized as one of the world's first computer programmers. Ada Lovelace day celebrates the contributions of women in the STEM fields of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics and aims to promote these fields to young women. Locally Rotary encourages young women to participate in STEM fields through its involvement with the University of Newcastle Science and Engineering Challenge and a range of other science based activities.

21.01.2022 The Rotary Club of Morisset is delighted to have received a Platinum Citation from Rotary International for 2019-2020 Based on meeting or exceeding club goals and targets, this citation comes in a year that was severely impacted by a global pandemic and its achievement is a credit to Immediate Past President Peter, his board and to all club members who worked hard to deliver in trying times. Just as 2019-20 required us to adapt and innovate to meet the new reality of the pandemic restrictions, 2020-21 will see us to continue to use these challenges in creative and productive ways.

21.01.2022 Perhaps one of the most famous people of the 20th century was Neil Armstrong who, along with fellow astronauts Michael Collins and Buzz Aldrin, captained the successful Apollo 11 mission to the moon. Armstrong, a test pilot and jet fighter veteran, who was considered to be one of the coolest astronauts under pressure, hand piloted the landing craft Eagle with only seconds of fuel remaining. While it was the efforts of hundreds of thousands of people that made it possible, Arm...strong had the honor of being the first person to ever walk on another celestial body. He was also the first Rotarian to stand on the moon. The courage of Armstrong and the other astronauts is obvious when you realize that the computing power used to get then to the moon and back was less than that of the average smart phone today. This one is for you Brian Coffey

19.01.2022 An earlier post claiming VP elect Kamala Harris was a Rotarian was based on information that has since shown to be false and the post has been removed. While it is regrettably untrue that Kamala is a Rotarian, there have been many great leaders including several US Presidents who have been Rotarians. Apologies to those who shared the erroneous information.

17.01.2022 PROUD TO HELP BRING BACK THE SNAG! This last seven months just hasn't been the same since CoVID caused the cancellation of Australia's favorite weekend sausage sizzles. But now there's reason to celebrate as the SNAG'S ARE BACK!... This Saturday marks the return of the sausage sizzle to Bunnings Morisset and the Rotary Club of Morisset is proud to be there to help bring back the snags. So tomorrow, when you drop by Bunnings, come hungry , grab a snag, help us celebrate and raise a few dollars for our community projects.

17.01.2022 Today is the UN International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, emerging data and reports from those on the front lines, have shown that all types of violence against women and girls, particularly domestic violence, has intensified. This is the Shadow Pandemic growing amidst the COVID-19 crisis and the UN is calling for a global collective effort to stop it. As COVID-19 cases continue to strain health services, essential servic...es, such as domestic violence shelters and helplines, have reached capacity. This year's theme is Orange the World: Fund, Respond, Prevent, Collect! and today marks the beginning of 16 days of global activism working towards eliminating gender based violence.

16.01.2022 The separation of drinking water and sewage by the use of reticulated water and flushing toilets lead to some of the greatest improvements in pubic health in history. But unfortunately some 2.5 billion people still do not have access to sanitary toilet facilities. As well as a sanitation and public health issues, open defecation creates a safety hazard for women who must wait till nightfall to get some privacy. That safe and sanitary toileting is a basic human need is evident... when the first item that was panic purchased worldwide, at the outset of the pandemic, was toilet paper. Two of Rotary International's core focus areas, namely Disease Prevention & Treatment and Provision of Water, Sanitation & Hygiene, are advanced by extending the access to clean toilet facilities to people who have none.

16.01.2022 Paradoxically, Teaching may well be, simultaneously, one of the most important and most undervalued professions for all of humanity. The developed world should look to the lengths people will go in developing nations to ensure that their children can and do receive a good education to begin to re-assess the value we place on that which we often take for granted; the value of teachers. Every world leader, great innovator, humanitarian or inspirational person will have a story ...of a teacher who believed in them and set them on the path for which they became known. Rotary believes in the value of teachers so much that it has Basic Education & Literacy as one of its seven core areas of focus internationally.

15.01.2022 Morisset Rotary was excited and proud to be the first community group back sizzling sausages at Bunnings this Saturday. Bunnings has been extremely CoVID responsible throughout the pandemic and has reintroduced the much loved sausage sizzle with a new CoVID safe layout and procedures. Like us, many people were very excited to see the return of the sausage sizzle as a sign that things were getting back to normal.... While this is true, we need to understand that, until we have a vaccine widely available, returning to normal means returning to a new CoVID aware and CoVIDSAFE normal. Many thanks to Bunnings Morisset for this opportunity for us to fundraise again and enjoy engaging with your customers.

15.01.2022 Next time you are munching down on some Finger Lickin' Good KFC remember that the famous Colonel Sanders was a Rotarian. Harland Sanders was an American businessman, best known for founding fast food chicken restaurant chain Kentucky Fried Chicken (also known as KFC) and later acting as the company's brand ambassador and symbol. His name and image are still symbols of the company. The title 'colonel' was honorary a Kentucky Colonel not the military rank. In later life he used much of the value of his stock in Kentucky Fried Chicken to establish Canadian charities that focused on children's hospitals.

13.01.2022 There is a Rotary Club for EVERYONE who wants to be part of a worldwide service organization. Whether it is your local Rotary club or one of the many new forms of online or broad focus clubs. Regardless of what you think you can bring, Rotary needs you, Rotary wants you.

13.01.2022 Members of the LGBTQ community have long had to hide in fear of being ostracized, fear for their livelihood and even fear for their lives. The fear of being rejected by friends and loved ones, as well as the community of which they are a part, has led to many LGBT people suffering mental illness and suicide at rates disproportionate to others in our community. It has forced many to remain in the proverbial closet. Coming Out Day encourages LGBTQ people everywhere to stand pr...oud and claim who they are, and thus reclaim their lives and sense of pride. Coming Out Day also encourages all of us to be loving, receptive and supportive of our friends, relations, colleagues and workmates when they choose to come out.

11.01.2022 A by-product of people coming together to make a difference in their communities and further afield is the amazing friendships that result. People join Rotary for many reasons but most stay because of the friendships that result.

11.01.2022 "They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them."

10.01.2022 The global prevalence of diabetes has nearly doubled since 1980, rising from 4.7% to 8.5% in the adult population. Over the past decade, diabetes prevalence has risen faster in low and middle-income countries than in high-income countries. Diabetes is a major cause of blindness, kidney failure, heart attack, stroke and lower limb amputation. Healthy diet, physical activity and avoiding tobacco use can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes.... In addition diabetes can be treated and its consequences avoided or delayed with medication, regular screening and treatment for complications. If you think you may have diabetes consult your doctor. If you would like to find out more about diabetes visit Diabetes Australia at https://www.diabetesaustralia.com.au/ Rotary funds research into diabetes through Australian Rotary Health https://australianrotaryhealth.org.au/tag/diabetes/ and Rotary has a Rotary Action Group for Diabetes at https://www.facebook.com/RAGDiabetes/

09.01.2022 Sir Edmund Hillary was a New Zealand mountaineer, explorer, philanthropist and Rotarian. On 29 May 1953, Hillary and Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers confirmed to have reached the summit of Mount Everest. After this achievement Hillary used much of his fame to establish the Himalayan Trust which he used to advance the wellbeing of the Sherpa peoples.

08.01.2022 MASKATEER'S EFFORTS RECOGNISED IN NSW PARLIAMENT. Morisset Rotary Club's mask making project has received a commendation , read into the record of NSW Parliament, by local Independent Member for Lake Macquarie, Greg Piper MP. This recognition is the icing on the top of a project that has been very rewarding for both club members and the community. ... Thank you Greg Piper for your continued support for our efforts. Donating hand made masks to community groups, locally when the threat of CoVID was high and overseas where the threat is growing, has been a small but meaningful way we can help others during this pandemic. While thankfully the immediate threat of CoVID is now lower in Australia, the Masketeers are continuing to make masks to help others overseas and for use if we have another outbreak. If you would like to help Morisset Rotary with this and other community service projects you can help our fundraising activities by buying some tickets in our 12 Days of Christmas Multi Draw Raffle. Every ticket has a chance to win up to 12 cash prizes totaling $2,500. Tickets can be purchased online at https://www.rafflelink.com.au/12daysxmas We thank you for your ongoing support.

08.01.2022 Last week President Margaret delivered another 50 face masks to Southlakes Community Services for them to use for vulnerable locals undertaking programs at it's centre. Southlake’s Liam Lewis thanked the club for the wonderful donation of masks for our local community.

07.01.2022 December 1 is World AIDS Day, a day to unite in the fight to end the HIV epidemic, support people living with HIV, and honor those who have lost their life. 2020 Theme is "Ending the HIV/AIDS Epidemic: Resilience & Impact" This theme focuses on the global commitment to deliver quality, people-centered HIV prevention and treatment services for impact. The theme also speaks to strengthening the capacity and resilience of communities and health systems to address HIV prevention... services in the midst of a global pandemic. While COVID-19 has created major new challenges, major public health authorities around the world remain committed to accelerating efforts to End the HIV Epidemic. As featured in an earlier post, Rotarian Francoise Barre-Sinoussi and her partner Luc Montagnier discovered both the existence of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and it's role in causing the disease AIDS. With the knowledge that AIDS was caused by a virus a range of Antiretroviral drugs were developed such that the once universally fatal disease is now survivable and manageable.

07.01.2022 November 15 is UN International Day for the Remembrance of Road Traffic Victims. While the Australian road toll has fallen dramatically from the 1970's with the introduction of seatbelts, random breath testing, airbags, speed cameras and new car safety standards, traffic accidents remain in the top three causes of deaths in people up to age 40.

06.01.2022 While yesterday's news that Vice President Elect Harris is a Rotarian was, regrettably, incorrect there have been many Rotarians that have gone on to achieve extraordinary things in their private lives or public service. US President John F Kennedy ( Rotary Club of Hyannis, MA) started the US Peace Corps which is a major international volunteering organization which brings aid to underdeveloped countries.

05.01.2022 The 1995 UN Declaration of Principles on Tolerance affirms that tolerance is respect and appreciation of the rich variety of our world's cultures, our forms of expression and ways of being human. Tolerance recognizes the universal human rights and fundamental freedoms of others. People are naturally diverse; only tolerance can ensure the survival of mixed communities in every region of the globe.

05.01.2022 While student exchanges are well known, Rotary touches the lives of many people through many programs, scholarships and exchanges. If you have been a recipient of a Rotary exchange, scholarship or program we would love to hear from you. Drop us an email or message us. This week is Reconnect With Rotary week and we would love to hear about your experiences with Rotary programs.... We might also like to update you on what Rotary has to offer you as a member.

04.01.2022 Perhaps one of the greatest inventors of the 20th century was Thomas Edison. Edison's work included groundbreaking inventions and innovations in electricity generation and distribution, communications, sound recording, motion pictures and the modern incandescent light bulb. Much of what we take for granted in our modern living is directly or indirectly dependent on the work of Edison.... He also changed the model of inventing from an "inspired flash of brilliance" to a defined and deliberate approach by developing the worlds first and arguably greatest (at the time) commercial laboratory at Menlo Park. Edison was a member of the Rotary Club of Orange in New Jersey.

02.01.2022 While some surfers might look upon Rotary as old and stuffy, it was a Rotarian from the Rotary Club of Honolulu who popularized the ancient Hawaiian sport and spread it internationally. Duke Kahanamoku was a superb athlete and competitive swimmer who won gold and silver medals representing the US in four Olympic Games from 1912 to 1932. So, while it is possible that there are more, there was at least one Rotarian who was a super cool surfer dude.

01.01.2022 November 20 is the date in 1959 when the UN General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child. It is also the date in 1989 when the UN General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Two of Rotary International's core focus areas, Maternal & Child Health and Provision of Basic Education aim to support children in need. Morisset Rotary supports our local children by funding a range of projects in our local schools to strengthen and support... youth mental health. We also provide awards for scholastic achievement and host international exchange students. One of our International Projects has been providing support to an orphanage in Timor Leste, in particular helping to develop a farm that will sustainably provide fresh fruit and vegetables for the children in its care.
