05.01.2022 Devastating flooding continues in Pursat Province In recent weeks, a massive flood has hit Pursat Province and is more devastating than anything experienced in ...decades. "Seasonal rains were made worse by a tropical storm, which caused flash floods in several provinces last week," reported Khun Sokha, a spokesperson for the National Committee for Disaster Management. The main roads that run alongside the waterways that flow from the Cardamom Mountains to the lowland Tonle Sap lake are now ruined. Houses and farmland along both sides of these rivers are the worst affected areas. Approximately 6.5 feet (2 meters) of rain has forced villagers and their livestock to find shelter on higher ground. Where there are hills, you will find herds of cattle trying to survive. Runoff from the Cardamom Mountains has caused the most flooding Pursat has seen since 1996. The torrential raining and mountain runoff has caused flooding in Pursat province that affects approximately 1,635 families and numerous homes, crops, roads, public schools, health centers, infrastructures, bridges, and rice farming field in Veal Veng, Kravanh and in Pursat city. The first floor of SC's Sylvia Lasky Memorial school was waiste-deep in water but fortunately, it only lasted a few days. It did wash away many nearby paved roads and red-stone roads. SC staff, teachers, and students helped with clean up after the water receded. But because the roads were blocked, our hope of reopening the school right away can not happen yet.
