25.01.2022 COOKIE BAKER, tonight 8pm. Cookie Baker is a pint-sized melodic force to be reckoned with. A walking, talking exercise in compact contradiction and adaptation. As gutsy in person as she is empathetic on stage, as careful with her picked guitar as she is unapologetic with her incisive words, as warm in her interactions as she is unafraid of bringing airtime to the hard stuff. More often than not penning songs of keenly observed lost love and found habits, Cookie speaks ...honestly of longing, loss, displacement and isolation, and the emotional debris resulting from these experiences. Raised on a farm by the seaside in rural South Australia, the deceivingly gentle melodies, cool wordsmithery, and sparkling grit of her vocals that audiences have come to adore have taken Cookie performing around Australia and brought her to share stages with many esteemed Australian artists, including Augie March, Kate Miller-Heidke, Ben Lee, Angie Hart (Frente!), Mick Thomas (Weddings, Parties, Anything), Little Birdy, and The Audreys.

18.01.2022 PIANO DIARIES This Sat night (27th) 8pm A song cycle about the journey of a piano from England to South Africa and subsequently to Australia. The piano belongs to the songwriter Joanna Weinberg, who inherited it from her grandmother and brought the piano with her when she came to Sydney in 1997. Not having had lessons since she was a teenager in South Africa, she took up lessons in Sydney and found herself flooded with memories released by the process . These memories became... The Piano Diaries. The songs range from a terrible incident witnessed during piano practice to the genesis of the instrument itself in the death of the elephant who lost his tusks for the keys . The stories told within the songs move from the singers early childhood lived under the piano of two orchestral musicians in London to the songs written in the early days of immigration when the piano was damaged on the journey to Sydney. Intimate, personal , heart wrenching and funny, the Piano Diaries offers insight into the impact of political damage on the life of a young person and also into the process of leaving that world behind for a better life. 17.01.2022 Tonight 8pm THE SAUERKRAUTS Deta and Rob Rayner from The Beez present: A yodellin, thigh slappin, lederhosen wettin fest of German music from Deta (accordion, vocals) and Rob (guitar, vocals) and featuring the Beatific Beats of our Bavarian Boombox. Youll thrill to comic classics from the likes of Rammstein and Kraftwerk; youll tear off that dirndl and shake a Teutonic Tailfeather when you catch a glimpse of Nenas 99 Red Balloons; youll swoon to Marlene Dietrichs L...ili Marlene but, most of all, youll be entertained-and thats an order! Deta and Rob always felt that the German Oeuvre was a little under represented in The Beez, so here they are to make amends with an evening of Dancefloor -Compatible Deutsche Derring-do, featuring Detas fabulous Brunhilde Bass accordion . One octave below the conventional accordion bass, this is an Alp-quaking tone of Wagnerian proportions. Melded with Robs custom Hfner Blitzkrieg guitar, its an irresistable rockin polka machine held together by the marching rhythms of a loop machine by the name of Wolfgang Amadeus and, of course, those gorgeous harmonies and cabaret sensibilties which are the icing on the Schwarwlderkirschtorte. Deta and Rob both hail from Berlin; their band The Beez performs regularly throughout Europe and Australia. Theyve appeared on ABC TVs Spicks and Specks and at just about every folk festival you care to think of. The Sauerkrauts will be touring Australia from January to May 2017. www.thebeez.de

17.01.2022 Tonight 7.30pm CHOPINS LAST TOUR. After a successful season here last year and then a successful season at Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Chopins Last Tour returns for one performance before heading off to the Adelaide Festival. This work is set in Scotland about October 17th 1848. One year before Chopin dies. It is perhaps not the happiest time in his life. He knows that he is dying, his relationship with George Sand has ended dramatically, his father has died 4 years earlier... and he doesnt enjoy his present company or circumstances. It is the story of his life through his music and his feelings. An attempt to humanise the genius, to give the audience an insight into the type of person he was. Explaining his upbringing, his family, the importance of Poland, his friendships and his lovers. His battle with illness, his conflicts and his trials. An insight into the type of life he lead. He didnt like giving public recitals, only giving 30 in his life time, but did thrive in Salons and drawing rooms of friends. He was a very likeable, polite man with a quirky sense of humour. He was introverted and shy. Even today he remains a romantic figure and this play explores the relationships with women in his life. This play is done in costume and in character and features live piano. The pieces played have been carefully chosen to represent the different sections of his life.

17.01.2022 WHO AM I Wed 20th to Sat 23rd July 8pm $20 / 15 tickets available at www.trybooking.com/MCHF A solo performance written and performed by Russell Cheek, directed by Stephen Abbott... One man, one remote, one screen, three suits, four nights. One moment in the maelstrom to define a lifetime - or face national humiliation (or as Russell puts it himself become a National Fuckwit). Like a good car-wax, director Stephen Abbott nourishes and protects Russell as he shares this harrowing momentum into the unknown - his attempt for the summit of all Australian quiz shows: Director Stephen Abbott, THE SANDMAN, (of Good News Week and Triple J fame,) was there and knows the story well. Who better than he then, to discern that this chink in time had the makings of a terrific show. Not only that, he also followed through with collaboration on, and direction of, this original piece. The great thing that Russell did, in that chink in time, was to become champion of national TV quiz show, Sale of the Century, and win the big jackpot of cash and all the prizes. A remarkable, and life-changing experience that few experience. And that even fewer do a show about (none?) This already makes it interesting. So it WILL be. if not noice, certainly - different, and unusual. Having two of the prime movers of THE CASTANET CLUB, (Stephen and Russell,) working on it, and now a third, (Warren Coleman, as Structural Engineer,) should make it, well even MORE interesting. This is eclectic, theatrical storytelling it recalls a certain period in Russells life, when he did something incredible, but at great risk to his emotional future. If you do want to find out Who You Are being under this level of pressure, with so much at stake, this is not a bad place to start looking

01.01.2022 On Wed this week (21st) we have A J LEONARD and JENNY ROWLANDS with their Welcome to the Paradise Hotel Show Multi instrumentalist, arranger and recording artist A.J. Leonard is one of Australias pioneer ukulele players and is highly regarded to be among the best in the world. I strongly identify with the music of Hawaii where the ukulele has never been a novelty. Such inspiration sowed the seeds for AJs debut album Tales From the Tropics. My number one hobby is listenin...g to music and (through that) Ive gained a greater appreciation of the past ..its influence on me as a writer and arranger and of course the ukulele draws it all together. After attending the VCA Jenny Rowlands continued her study of the cello overseas and has performed professionally throughout the classical scene in Australia. The duo with cellist Jenny Rowlands is a result of an appreciation for classical and film music. They have performed and conducted workshops at major festivals and ukulele retreats across Australia, New Zealand & the USA. Together they are a true melding of musical minds, known on the world circuit for their unique ukulele/cello interplay and finely crafted arrangements. See more
