23.01.2022 Come celebrate craft and making: traditional, contemporary, subversive and diverse. DESIGN Canberra presents Real to Reel: The Craft Film Festival Seated in our very own Dome, you’ll discover documentaries, maker profiles, music videos and hand-crafted animations that celebrate craft in all its facets. ... The 28 films selected offer a unique opportunity to witness craft in action and the narratives, passion and skill inherent in the creation of works. The program also unites some unusual and perhaps unexpected tales of makingfrom miniatures, to replica birds’ eggs, to a human powered bakeryalong with animations that bring to life fibre, wool, clay and found objects. Bookings are essential. #CraftACT #DESIGNcanberra

22.01.2022 Two weeks ago, the Canberra hailstorm smashed Shine Dome skylights and had staff scrambling to save Australian Academy of Science archives from water damage. We are proud to house this collection of scientific archives held nowhere else in the world. The Academy has made an urgent appeal to digitise these archives. Assessment of damage to the Shine Dome is still ongoing, but it is likely to take months to repair.

20.01.2022 Completed in 1959 and reflecting some of the more adventurous architectural ideas of that time, the Shine Dome (previously known as Becker House) remains one of... the most unique buildings in Australia. The dome roof, walls and structure combined dives down beneath the still water of its moat to give the sense that it is floating. From the walkway between the moat and the inner walls, the arches provide a 360 panoramic sequence of 16 views of the capital city and the hills beyond.
