25.01.2022 Case study 5 month old Zali* had gone from feeding 1-2 overnight and sleeping fairly well during the day to now catnapping all day, crying during settles and feeding at least 3 or 4 times overnight. The first thing that stood out in Zalis 24 hour log that mum sent me was how much solid foods she was having and how little she feeding during the day- she was basically refusing most breastfeeds and if she did latch it was just for a few minutes before she would pull away ups...et. She was having breakfast, lunch and dinner as mum had had numerous well meaning bits of advice about how Zali must be hurry if she is suddenly waking overnight. This is a really really common issue I see at this age and it was a simple case of tipping the milk/food balance during the day back in favour of milk. We cut down to just 1 solid meal which contained no meat protein and fairly soon Zali was back to feeding really well during the day and waking just once in the night for a feed. My general rule for bubs who are otherwise well, thriving and gaining weight is to start slow with solid foods. Finding the perfect milk/food balance is tricky and we want to be seeing decent milk feeds as the priority with bubs this age. Babies are very clever at knowing exactly how many calories they want/need from milk over 24 hours and if they are full of food all day and therefore put off their milk, they will almost always wake overnight looking for milk to compensate! #sleep #sleepconsultant #consultant #tips #parenting #parentingtips #formums #fordads #babysleep #childsleep #sleepbetter #parents #kids #mumlife #dadlife #motherhood #parenthood #babies #thesleepnurse #nurse #sleepnurse #newborn #newmum #newdad #milestone #sleeptime #settling #toddler

24.01.2022 When is the best age to tackle sleep issues? Is my child too far gone to change our bad sleep situation? My inbox is constantly flooded with questions like these and my answer is always the same When what youre currently doing has become problematic for you and your baby, then it may be time to look at making improvements. For some bubs, this is around 4 months old. For others, this is when theyre a toddler. My motto is, its only a problem IF its a problem.... Do you need help getting your baby to sleep? 24.01.2022 Case Study 16 month old Mila* was stuck in two nap limbo. Her mum was really struggling to transition to one nap. Milas first nap of the day was around 10am. She would then wake around 11am and it was almost impossible to get her back down for the afternoon unless her mum drove her around for hours in the car. If she skipped her second nap, she would be awake from 11am until bedtime in the evening. This resulted in overtiredness and several night wakes! In the morning, ...shed wake anytime from 5am which restarted the cycle of needing to go down for an early nap at 10am. We put together a plan to stretch this 10am sleep time out by 15 minutes each day until it was consistently around the midday mark for 2-2.5 hours. This change helped Mila go to bed at 6.30pm and sleep through until 6.30am! Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and set that nap back a little bit each day, pushing through the tiredness in the late morning in order to transition from two naps to one. #BabySleepHelp #BabySleepConsultant #BabySleep #BabySleepTips #TheSleepNurse

22.01.2022 Dropping your toddlers day nap. This is a scary and daunting concept for many- myself included. My 2.5 year old dropped his day nap smack bang in the middle of our first week of social distancing and isolation. It makes the day feel very long and that much needed down time we were all getting while he napped was bliss. I knew it was inevitable that the nap had to go when he began to take a long time to settle in the evening - one night he was awake until 9pm. Signs that your ...toddler is ready to drop the day nap include nap refusal and tantrums going to bed at naptime and bedtime in the evening, random night wakes where they seem wide awake and ready to party and early morning wakes around 5/5:30am. The positive to your toddler dropping the beloved day nap is that they need a super early bedtime in the evening for a few weeks ie 6pm and more often than not theyre asleep within minutes. It's also a good idea once the nap is dropped to continue offering some rest time. This can be as simple as putting him/her into bed with some books or a quiet game and leaving them to have some downtime. Even 30 minutes of this can help them (and you) feel a little more refreshed and ready for the afternoon ahead. Off the record - this is also the time of day when my toddler now has some quiet screen time to rest and recharge #sorrynotsorry #sleep #sleepconsultant #consultant #tips #parenting #parentingtips #formums #fordads #babysleep #childsleep #sleepbetter #parents #kids #mumlife #dadlife #motherhood #parenthood #babies #thesleepnurse #nurse #sleepnurse #newborn #newmum #newdad #milestone #sleeptime #settling #toddler

22.01.2022 Case Study 2.5 month old Kai* had bouts of being a great sleeper, but whenever a disturbance occurred (like teething, a cold or a holiday), it would always hit him hard. His sleep would become poor with night wakes and no ability to self settle. Kais mum came to me with all the foundations and knowledge behind her to enable him to sleep well, but she was so frustrated that things kept popping up and dragging them back to square one. They really needed help with consisten...cy so these phases wouldnt affect him so much and for weeks on end. We worked together making a plan that she would implement for several days once he recovered from the previous sleep disturbances. Having close contact with me each day really helped as it meant she was logging and reflecting on her settles and resettles. This enabled her to clearly see where her frustration had led to being inconsistent and throwing in the towel on his routine and settles. I heard from Kais mum last week. She let me know that since we worked together he has cut his molars, been on a 5 day trip away (where they slept in the same room) and even had a bout of gastro. After a few days of poor sleep and when he was well again, his mum was able to whip out the original plan and get back to basics! They were on track within just a few short days. #BabySleepHelp #BabySleepConsultant #BabySleep #BabySleepTips #TheSleepNurse

21.01.2022 beautiful review from Elijiah’s mum who I have been working with these past few weeks

21.01.2022 I had a really interesting client this week. Mum is a high profile social media influencer and needed help with her fourth Bub. Mum mentioned to me that she was concerned her following would judge her if they found out that she sleep trained her baby. She told me that whenever she posted about how sleep deprived or frustrated she was with waking every hour all night, she would be met with dms from other women telling her to suck it up, to just deal with it as itll all be... a distant memory soon and the absolute worst you shouldnt have had kids if you didnt want to be up all night" This made me feel sad for her and for all mums who feel like they have to stay silent about wanting/needing better sleep habits for their family. Firstly it depicts sleep training as some kind of evil cry it out process that involves abandoning your motherly duties and deserting your baby in a room to scream for hours on end. I assure you this is not the case, my clients have great success with gentle, hands on in-room techniques. So does wanting to sleep train make these women bad mums? Absolutely not. This is mum shaming and is so disappointing. There are lots of awesome mums out there that feed to sleep every couple of hours overnight for years and LOVE it and that is absolutely fine. There are mums who rock their babies to sleep in their arms and then co-sleep or whose babies will only sleep in the pram or car while mum heads out most of the day and that is absolutely fine. These mums are fabulous in their parenting styles. There are also mums who just cant or don't want to do the above which is also absolutely fine. The point i'm making is that we need to support each other as women and mothers and recognise that what works for one does not necessarily work for all. We should be accepting of all parenting styles and build each other up. I would love to hear your thoughts on this- have you ever felt mum shamed for wanting to sleep train or establish a routine? 21.01.2022 Its so important to be supportive of mums who choose to sleep train or establish a routine for their baby. Implementing good sleep habits is not only beneficial for babies, it also has strong positive effects for the wellbeing of mums. Sleep intervention in infancy resulted in sustained positive effects on maternal depression symptoms and found no evidence of longer-term adverse effects on either mothers' parenting practices or childrens mental health. This quote is from... the AAP who ran a trial to determine the long-term mother and child mental health effects of a population-based infant sleep intervention. https://pediatrics.aappublications.org/conte//3/e621.short #MumsSupportingMums #SleepConsultant #SleepTips #BabySleepHelp #TheSleepNurse

19.01.2022 Im always asked my opinion on sleep products and baby paraphernalia so I thought Id share some of my must have baby items that I use personally and recommend to clients. Thank me later To make the room nice and dark: You cant beat the @ergopouch window blockout. Finally a portable block out blind that is white and pretty from the inside making the room look fresh! Beats the old tin foil on the window trick! White noise: The 'relax melodies app or the @edenandanais star ... Newborn swaddle: The miracle blanket. Seriously if you have a newborn or are pregnant then you need this. It's a game changer. Sleeping bags for older babies and toddlers: @sleepy_bear_bags They come in large sizes and my tall 2.5 year old is in one and its so cosy and perfect meaning I dont have to worry about blankets or anything else dangerous in his cot. Sheets and cot linen: Im as big a fan of the cheaper department store brands from places like kmart and target as I am of the odd luxurious linen sheet or two from places like @deijistudios. I alternate between the two types. Are there any must have baby items that you couldnt live without? See more

19.01.2022 Case Study 6 month old Matilda* was an ex-reflex baby. Matilda had no routine, was severely overtired (as was her mum) and wasnt able to fall asleep, or back to sleep, unless she was held. ... Reflux goes hand in hand with assisted naps, broken sleep and generally bad sleep habits. This is because the baby's pain and discomfort is so severe, mum and dad do whatever is needed in order to get their baby comfortable and asleep. Matildas mum weaned her off reflux medication and then contacted me for help. We had to basically overhaul everything for this bub in terms of sleep, whilst also ensuring her reflux didnt return. We completely started from scratch! Once self settling was established, the resettles became a piece of cake! She just needed that little bit of guidance with naps and bedtime and she was able to do the rest herself. #BabySleepHelp #BabySleepConsultant #BabyReflux #BabySleepTips #TheSleepNurse

18.01.2022 Case study 3.5 year old Talia was causing sleep problems for the entire family. Bedtime in the evening took anywhere from 1 to 3 hours of coming out of the room, yelling and throwing her toys around until Talia was asleep. She would then wake every couple of hours and demand milk, water, her blanket (which was usually just in her hand), for mum to come and sit with her etc etc etc. She shared a room with her older sister (4.5 years) so would wake her multiple times a night... too. Both girls were tired and cranky due to an average of 8-9 hours broken sleep a night. The first change we made was to move Talias older sister to a spare room for a few nights so that she could fall asleep easily at bedtime and sleep through the night. This alone was the incentive Talia needed to change her cheeky ways and stay in bed. This combined with lots and lots of silent returns (and a rewards chart) was enough to have her sleeping peacefully from 6.30pm-6.30am every night within a week. The night we moved Talias older sister back into their room mum even overheard Talia whisper to her sister as they were getting ready for bed Im a big girl now and I dont wake people up so you can come and sleep in the big girl room again if you want. This made me laugh out loud! 15.01.2022 Case study Maya* 5 weeks was in a constant cycle of 10 minute naps all. day. long. Mum was wanting longer more restorative naps for her baby as she was beginning to show signs of over tiredness which was resulting in extra night wakes and poor feeds during the day. The first thing that jumped out at me while I was putting Mayas sleep plan together was that she was placed in the bassinet during settles and resettles without being swaddled or sometimes in an arms up sleep...ing bag. It was apparent that Mayas startle reflex was disrupting her sleep and so mum worked on implementing a firm/snug arms down swaddle technique. We followed the fourth trimester philosophy which basically encourages that you mimic the womb environment (snug and warm!) for the first 12 weeks of a babies life. Mum found that as soon as she started swaddling Maya, settles were a lot shorter and she was suddenly napping for 1 sleep cycle or more. #sleep #sleepconsultant #consultant #tips #parenting #parentingtips #formums #fordads #babysleep #childsleep #sleepbetter #parents #kids #mumlife #dadlife #motherhood #parenthood #babies #thesleepnurse #nurse #sleepnurse #newborn #newmum #newdad #milestone #sleeptime #settling #toddler

13.01.2022 My baby is waking early in the morning and therefore is not lasting until nap 1. HELP?! This is a really common issue that I see and when I do instagram Q&As this seems to be one of the most common questions that im asked by all you lovely followers. My advice is always the same for babies over say 4 months that are on The Sleep Nurse routine - push on until nap time (give or take 15 minutes or so if bub is falling asleep). Offering an early first nap continuously is reinfor...cing bubs body clock to continue to wake very early in the morning. It's a juggle to get to nap 1 with a tired baby on your hands but it is so worth it to then see the rest of the day's naps flow at their usual times. Newborn babies younger than 4 months should just nap as per awake windows but older bubs should always be encouraged to press on till usual nap times. #sleep #sleepconsultant #consultant #tips #parenting #parentingtips #formums #fordads #babysleep #childsleep #sleepbetter #parents #kids #mumlife #dadlife #motherhood #parenthood #babies #thesleepnurse #nurse #sleepnurse #newborn #newmum #newdad #milestone #sleeptime #settling #toddler

10.01.2022 I know I sound like a broken record when I carry on about consistency but it is so so important when it comes to sleep habits. When I am putting a sleep plan together for a family and whilst we are implementing the changes I encourage a settling/resettling technique that THEY are comfortable with and are logistically able to implement within their household. There are a range of different techniques that parents can choose from but the one thing that they all have in common i...s that in order to be successful they have to be used with 100% consistency. It doesnt matter how hands on/hands off you choose to be with your approach to sleep but the key is to pick one and use it the entire way through the program. Chopping and changing how you settle and resettle your baby at different times of the day and night sends mixed messages and results in a lot more tears and frustration on bubs end. My motto is do whatever you need to do in the moment however you must be prepared to offer that same level of input when bubs enter their next light sleep phase and wakes fully and needs whatever settling method they were offered at the previous wake. #sleep #sleepconsultant #consultant #tips #parenting #parentingtips #formums #fordads #babysleep #childsleep #sleepbetter #parents #kids #mumlife #dadlife #motherhood #parenthood #babies #thesleepnurse #nurse #sleepnurse #newborn #newmum #newdad #milestone #sleeptime #settling #toddler

07.01.2022 Case study Benji had been a serial catnapper for the first 4 months of his life. He had never slept more than 45 minutes in his entire life. His nights were pretty great according to mum, Lisa so she didnt think he was much need to worry about his day sleep as he was sleeping through all night which she had heard was really good for his age. Cue the 4 month sleep regression Since about 4.5 months he was waking up to 7 times overnight and the cat naps during the day we...re beginning to take their toll. The 4 month regression tends to hit babies who catnap harder than those who dont so I knew right away that the best approach for Benji was to work on his day naps and his nights would return to normal as a result. During our 10 day program we used a mixture of hands on and eventually hands off settling methods when Benji woke at that 45 minute mark during naps. We also tweaked the timing of these naps so that he was not going down over/undertired at naptime. On day 5 Benji took his first ever nap that lasted for more than 45 minutes- Benji slept an entire 2.5 hours unassisted. Within a few days his night sleep sorted itself out with no sleep training needed. It was a simple case of catnaps wreaking havoc with what were previously okay nights. Lisa told me at the end of our program that although the increased sleep they were all getting was awesome, the best part had been that when he was awake he was no longer grouchy, grumpy and overtired- he actually woke from naps smiling and happy for the first time ever. Mum also found that he was breastfeeding a lot better as he was no longer overtired! #sleep #sleepconsultant #consultant #tips #parenting #parentingtips #formums #fordads #babysleep #childsleep #sleepbetter #parents #kids #mumlife #dadlife #motherhood #parenthood #babies #thesleepnurse #nurse #sleepnurse #newborn #newmum #newdad #milestone #sleeptime #settling #toddler

06.01.2022 Public service announcement MUMMYYYY ITS YELLOW!! This is what I wake up to each morning coming from down the hall in my boys room. The groclock is honestly one of the best purchases I have made. Since we moved my kids into a room together, they have the tendency to want to start their day at some ungodly hour like 5am until I purchased a groclock. ... You set the clock to a time that you consider morning (for us this is 6.30am) and at that time the clock face goes from blue with moons (night) to yellow with sun (day). It comes with a little book that tells a story about the clock. This post is not affiliated at all! Im genuinely just a happy customer who now recommends the groclock to ALL my clients with toddlers that struggle with the early wakes You can check it out for yourself here - https://grocompany.com.au/product/gro-clock/ #SleepTips #ParentingTips #SleepTime #ParenthoodMoments #TheSleepNurse

05.01.2022 Case study 3 year old Oliver* was driving his parents up the wall. Despite not having a nap during the day, he was up until 10pm most nights coming in and out of his room upwards of 40 times per night! In the night he would wake and creep into mum and dads bed and because he was so overtired he would struggle to get back to sleep and would toss and turn in his parents bed before eventually waking fully at 5am. Mum was weeks away from giving birth to bub #2 and needed help!... We implemented the 4Rs Routine: We introduced a calm, quiet and repetitive bedtime routine each evening- bath time, teeth and quiet stories into bed and a cuddle at 6.45pm. This eased Oliver into bedtime as opposed to it being sprung him. We also made sure Oliver was involved so he chose the 3 Thomas the tank engine stories to read each night and this became something that they all started to look forward to! Role play: Oliver chose a friend aka his teddy, that would have a little bed of his own on the floor next to Olivers. Mum and Oliver would make a big show of tucking teddy in each night and saying goodnight. They would tell him that he needed to stay in bed. Mum made a big fuss over Teddy when he did and Oliver was so excited by the game that he wanted to be like Teddy too Returns: once Oliver was in bed, every time he came out of his room mum did a silent return. This involves calmly popping him back in bed over and over without chatting/negotiating/fighting. The first night mum had to do this 29 times! The second night was 18 and by the 5th night Oliver stayed in bed and didnt get up. Rewards: Together mum and Oliver made a rewards chart. He gained reward stickers for staying in bed and at the end of the week he was able to choose a special prize for being such a good boy! This chart was a nice fun reminder for him and gave him something exciting to aim for at bedtime and overnight. Within a week Oliver was asleep by 7pm and mum was needing to wake him at 7am the next morning! See more

05.01.2022 Case study Hudson (2.5 years old) was resisting his nap and waking many times overnight. He would fall asleep okay at bedtime in the evening (probably due to his nap resistance) but after an initial few hours asleep he would wake up hysterical and want to get up and play. Mum reported that he had always slept really well until a recent bout of croup which show his sleep regress significantly. His diet was great, he was healthy and thriving and mum was consistent in her app...roach to settles so I knew that there was something different going on. I had mum describe his sleep space in detail and she even provided me with pictures. What I found was a room full of sleep contraptions that mum had implemented around the time that his sleep became an issue. This little guy had 1 night light, 1 star machine that projected a light display on the roof, 1 shusher, 1 white nose machine that played lullaby on repeat, a gro clock and also a glow dreamer with the oil diffuser running all night. This little guy was literally up partying in what looked like a disco. Its not uncommon to see this kind of sleep space when I dig a little deeper- well meaning parents literally try everything to get their toddler to switch off and fall asleep and Hudson was latching onto every new sleep tool that mum was introducing and demanding that it be turned on and running each night so before mum knew it she had all these things going and had no idea how to pull back. We went one by one and removed a device each night until eventually he just had the glow dreaming machine (which is a god send by the way) without the light function on and just the constant white noise function running. He initially protested a lot at bedtime I want my stars, where is my sleepy songs, wheres my clock, gimme my stars etc but once asleep he didnt wake at all and was sleeping through undisturbed until morning. #sleep #sleepconsultant #consultant #tips #parenting #parentingtips #formums #fordads #babysleep

02.01.2022 I always encourage clients to find a balance between bub sleeping well in their room in a cot/bassinet whilst also being able to sleep in the car/pram/carrier on the go. The reality of our busy lives is that we cant be home all the time for every single nap and I dont like mums to feel isolated and stuck indoors 24/7. If bub is on more than 1 nap per day then the shorter of the two is usually advised to be done out and about. My general rule is 80/20 when it comes to wher...e bub sleeps. If youre getting some good restorative naps at home most of the time then thats fine. If you do find that youve had a busy day and bub has had pram sleeps all day or youve been out in the evening later than usual then just compensate the next day with solid naps at home and an early bedtime! #sleep #sleepconsultant #consultant #tips #parenting #parentingtips #formums #fordads #babysleep #childsleep #sleepbetter #parents #kids #mumlife #dadlife #motherhood #parenthood #babies #thesleepnurse #nurse #sleepnurse #newborn #newmum #newdad #milestone #sleeptime #settling #toddler

02.01.2022 Case Study 3 year old Oliver* was taking hours to fall asleep at bedtime. He usually wouldnt sleep until 9/10pm and during the night he would wake multiple times for bottles. As a result of being extremely tired from the night, he would sleep in late and nap for a couple of hours during the day. Oliver was grumpy, irritable and showing signs of iron deficiency. He had 6-7 200ml bottles of cows milk over 24 hours, totalling approximately 1.4 litres of cows milk. As he was... so full of milk, he barely ate any food. Excessive dairy intake can affect the stomach's ability to absorb iron from food. Many people dont know this but low iron can be a contributing factor to night wakes in children, and even adults! We cut Olivers milk intake to 2 small cups of milk at lunch and dinner. We also cut his day nap completely. Within a week, he was sleeping 12 hours plus!! #ToddlerSleepProblems #ToddlerSleepConsultant #ToddlerSleepTips #ToddlerSleep #TheSleepNurse

01.01.2022 Sleep training is one of those parenting issues you can go most of your adult life without caring a fig about. You can even make your way home from the hospital with a human baby, blissfully unaware of the political minefield that awaits you. But if you have a child and you are a woman especially one who works (and thats most of us) then at some point in the first six months of your babys life, youre going to realise that you need sleep, and your baby needs sleep, and... this problem isnt going to magically solve itself.
