19.01.2022 If you have read one of the previous posts on MACRO-STRATEGIES, you may be wondering to yourself: Does SYDNEY MATHEMATICS have MICRO-STRATEGIES? The answer is YES, YES, and YES!!!... MICRO-STRATEGIES are the little tricks (to which EDUCATORS give big, formal names) and arithmetical insights that help a child calculate quicker, faster, and more accurately. Over time, the student will come to invent, will find out about, will share, will teach, and will come to love particular strategies. And there will be other strategies which he absolutely loathes! Personal preference is important in math, and if the child is left free - once he is taught some strategies - to use the ones he loves, then this freedom gives him MOTIVATION and a sense of independence. One MICRO-STRATEGY that our students love is called THE BILBO STRATEGY Boz, one of our seven year old students, invented the fun name for this one. You will know it. It is simply this: 29 + 23 = ? WHAT TO DO? Add one, then take away one: 30 + 22 and you're off and away!! [Though there are 2 steps in this, experience shows that it is better to do them both at once. The old-fashioned way is to say: 30 + 23 - 1 = and all my students feel this is more complicated] They love the BILBO STRATEGY!! Try another one before you go: 59 + 26 = Bilbo says; 'Add one, then take away one, dude!' 60 + 25 =
