09.01.2022 NEWS RELEASE 30 November 2020 FESTIVE SEASON IS A CHALLENGING TIME FOR MENTAL HEALTH The region’s newest specialist mental health hospital, The Toowoomba Clinic is concerned about deteriorating mental health across the region during the festive season due to the combination of increased anxiety caused by the pandemic and long waiting times to see mental health professionals.... Graham Higgins, a spokesperson for The Toowoomba Clinic says We will be staying open over the festive season to support the recovery of our patients as the pandemic has seriously affected the mental health of so many people in the region. It’s a big ask to expect new patients wishing to see psychiatrists and psychologists to wait 4-6 months if they are suffering from acute depression, anxiety, bi-polar disorder, PTSD or other mental health conditions. The shortage of mental health professionals is not keeping up with community demands and the Federal Department of Health is not helping by withholding Medicare provider numbers for local psychiatrists. We have psychiatrists who would like to start working here but they can’t do it until they get a Medicare provider number. People struggling with mental health issues and living on their own and without family support find it the most difficult time of the year to be feeling lonely and isolated.
