21.01.2022 Switzerland's spectacular #GlacierExpress is one of the great train journeys of the world - and one I can't wait to get back onboard. Running from Zermatt to St Moritz along narrow gauge mountain railways, and featuring large panoramic windows it really is worth the trip. I loved everything about it except the food, which I thought could be improved - but a minor complaint! ... Here my train is on the platform at Brig, one of the first stops after leaving Zermatt and a major junction where the standard gauge mainlines to Geneva, Berne and Italy, along with several mountain railways all converge! . . Unfortunately due to COVID restrictions travel from here is all but legally impossible! As soon as we crush this second wave and restrictions are lifted I cannot wait to get back on the rails. 15.01.2022 One of my favourite completely unexpected train trips on our trip to Europe last year was the short run from Lisbon to the beach town of Cascais. The CP local train, which aesthetically leaves a little to be desired with graffiti covering windows etc. follows the Tagus River from Lisbon past its mouth and then along the Atlantic. Super interesting trip if you have a free afternoon in Lisbon!! .... . Unfortunately due to COVID restrictions travel from here is all but legally impossible! As soon as we crush this second wave and restrictions are lifted I cannot wait to get back on the rails. Until then, all pictures featured are from previous trips. 14.01.2022 Portugal's answer to higher speed rail is #CP's Alfa Pendular - Portugal's Pendolino high-speed tilting train that links Lisbon with Porto with some trains also heading south to Faro and north to Guimarães and Braga. I was lucky enough to travel on a refurbished set between Lisbon and Porto - a 2.5 hour journey on which the train got to 220km/hr. CP has undergone a large refurbishment program for Alfa Pendular trains - I can't wait to see how they clean up! .... . 12.01.2022 Amtrak's #Cardinal definitely has my vote for the most scenic train east of Chicago. My tip - travel east and get up early for a walk in Charleston, VW (pictured) to make sure you're awake for the scenic trip up the New River Gorge! Before this trip I had travelled the fast way between Chicago and the east coast by train a number of times. I’ve had some great rides on the Lake Shore Limited and the Capitol Limited, and had, until this trip, been hesitant to ride the Cardina...l Amtrak’s alternative Chicago to Washington DC and New York train due to its lack of a dining car and its single level equipment. Amtrak levelled the playing field by removing dining cars from the other trains, so I thought I'd give it a go - and I'm so glad I did! But @Amtrak please please please change the train to terminate in Washington DC with a NE Regional or Acela connection up the NEC and upgrade the Cardinal to a Superliner. The Sightseer Lounge would be amazing on this route! . . Unfortunately due to COVID restrictions International travel from here is banned and most states have border closures or restrictions. 11.01.2022 I can't wait to see my favourite train - Australia's #IndianPacific back on the rails after being halted since March by Coronavirus. @JourneyBeyondRail have made some fantastic improvements, and I'm hopeful there are more to come with rumours of extending it 10 or so km to Fremantle, and the potential for a shakeup to the eastbound itinerary. Fingers crossed we keep COVID in check and it'll soon be safe to open the WA border, allowing the IP to get back on the rails!... . . 05.01.2022 One of my all time favourite train experiences is the westbound stop in #Rawlinna on @JourneyBeyondRail 's #IndianPacific - what could be better than alighting from an 800m long train in the middle of the desert, some 600km from the nearest town of any size, to be treated to live music, bonfires and canapés! Rawlinna is on the last night of the Sydney Perth journey (sadly, going the other way it is at 6am which doesn't quite create the same atmosphere) so most passengers have... had time to get to know each other which adds to the event! . . 04.01.2022 One of my greatest fears following a huge disaster on the Trans-Siberian looks like it might be able to unfold again in Form Madison, IA! Whenever you have a passenger train stopped on a side track, with the main terminal across a for the time being empty track, be careful of wandering across, and if you do take money and ID with you... There is potential for disaster if a mile and a half freight train decides to pass between you in the terminal and your train - something I, ...along with about 40 other people, learned the hard way in the middle of a Siberian winter! Luckily I'd leanred by the time I took a ride on @Amtrak 's #SouthwestChief! . . 01.01.2022 A busy morning at Los Angeles' Union Station where Amtrak 's westbound #SouthwestChief and its northbound #CoastStarlight share a platform between tracks 10 and 11. I was lucky enough to be travelling from Flagstaff, AZ to San Francisco so got to ride both trains - something that is harder to do now Amtrak are running thrice daily. .... .
