What are the Durability Class’ of Timber? There are 4 basic levels or durability in timber 1Highly Durable has a life expectancy of 25+ years in-ground. 40+ years above ground exposed and 40+ years Protected... 2Durable has a life expectancy of 1525 years in-ground. 1540 years above ground exposed and 40+ years protected. 3Moderately Durable has a life expectancy of 515 years in-ground. 7-5 years above ground exposed and 40+ years Protected 4Non-Durable has a life expectancy of less the 5 years in-ground 07 years above ground exposed and 40+ years protected. It is possible to increase timbers durability with various levels of treatment. These levels of treatment are called Hazard Levels. H1 suitable for above ground internal use. H2 suitable for above ground internal use protected against borers and termites. H3 suitable external use above ground protected against moderate decay borers and termites H4 suitable external use in ground protected against severe decay borers and termites H5 suitable external use in ground contact with or in fresh water protected against very severe decay borers and termites H6 Marine water protected against marine wood borers and decay. 02.01.2022 I have recently been asked if Timber should be weathered before it gets painted or oiled. Whilst the paint manufacturer recommends weathering to allow all the Tannin to be drawn out of the Timber. We recommend the opposite. Oiling or painting timber as soon as possible will give you and your customer the best life of any and all timber. There are 2 main factors that affect all timber Treated or Raw. They are : 1 Moisture. Timber is Hydroscopic meaning that it absorbs and l...oses moisture. This variance in moisture content is the cause of warping, twisting, cracking and splitting. 2 UV Degradation. This causes timber to grey age and break down. Getting oils with a pigmentation offers a minimum UV protection. Remember it is cheaper to re-paint then to re-build. See more
