24.01.2022 Happy Easter y'all and thank you for helping us to support local. Together we spent $1350 amongst 19 small businesses in Canberra. LuLu & Sis the cookies sold like hotcakes and excited many gustatory cells. Congratulations to Zena the greyhound who won herself a dental scale and polish!... Zena's mum was very, very pleased (Zena was...less pleased).

23.01.2022 Ekko, why you so purdy?

22.01.2022 The only bebe in his mum's tum, safely removed during a caesarean. :-) (all toe beans present and perfect).

21.01.2022 Dogs don't have verbal speech, but they ask us questions ALL the time. Sometimes they do this by offering a series of behaviors whilst they wait for a change in our response. Sometimes they do this by vocalising. Sometimes they do this by pestering us with pawing and nudging. And sometimes they sit quietly and look at us. The training method in this video capitalises on the last behavior because it is the one that gives us the time and space to exchange information with our... dogs. Here you can see Grace being taught to be calm and make eye contact ("eyes on me") with her human (whose name is Jordan), to receive a reward. Grace will learn to look to her human, quietly and calmly whenever anything is needed or wanted. This could include rescources, affection, or guidance on how to behave. This last part is super important. Of course it's up to the human to provide clear and reliable signals in a reasonable and kind way. You are your dog's greatest resource. So make sure that you ARE their greatest resource. This way they will develop confidence and you will earn their trust.

20.01.2022 This is a photo of a patient being prepped for a caesarean. Caesareans are overwhelmingly team-oriented events and when the outcome is good it feels absolutely wonderful. In this instance there was one giant puppy residing in his mum's uterus and he came out pink and squeaky. Mum woke shortly thereafter and fed him. ... And we all smiled a lot (and probably secreted some oxytocin) and it was a very good day :-)

18.01.2022 Is that you, Monday?

17.01.2022 A little library for little books in a little village. Donated by the village vets and village vet nurses.

17.01.2022 Is getting a pet mini-pig a good idea? It could be. But mostly it isn't. In our experience mini-pigs belie their name before they reach their first birthday. Sure, they may be mini compared to their commercial counterparts, but 90kg of hog is still a lot to contend with in an urban environment.... There are no true miniature pigs in Australia. Both the Pot-bellied and Kune Kune breeds are inhibited imports into our country. Also, be aware that many local councils will not grant permits for a pig to be kept in a backyard. If you're still passionate about pig acquisition, we suggest you consult this excellent guide http://know.rspca.org.au/Can-pigs-be-kept-as-pets_111.html

15.01.2022 We are open! Please help keep us well and out of quarantine so that we may continue to look after your fur-kids. Follow our sms instructions if you've booked an appointment. ... All clients will receive an email shortly. We ask that you read it carefully. xx The Villagers

12.01.2022 Coolest cat this summer @benji_and_koda

11.01.2022 I do not sew (material) well, nor eagerly. Yet this is me, violating mum's Janome with reckless abandon on a wild Saturday night in. Why though?... The fires rage on and the native wildlife toll escalates. Last week we contacted WIRES to ask how we can help. Most natives being treated for burns require a "safe space" whilst in care. Aka: a soft and snuggly pouch. We' ve been given a pattern to sew. It's super simple (not even joking). If you're eager to contribute, we can provide both the material and the pattern!

11.01.2022 Catch Dr Amanda Keast on ABC radio with host Adrienne Francis every Saturday fortnight at 1040. Amanda has been a practising veterinarian for over 16 years and is always eager to chat with people about their beloved hairy house-tenants. Topics of conversation include borking dogs, narcissistic cats, hens off the lay and other clucking nightmares. ... Phone through on 1300 681 666 with a story or a question!

10.01.2022 So devoted that they catch our stress. Anecdotally we can tell you this is true and now a 2019 study supports our observation. Hair cortisol concentration (a marker of chronic stress) was measured more than once in 58 owners and their dogs. Personality traits of both the owners and the dogs were determined and the results were correlated.... The findings? There was synchronisation between dog and human cortisol concentrations. Interestingly, the characteristics of the owners rather than those of the dogs were related to the dog's cortisol levels, suggesting that dogs mirror the stress levels of their owners rather than the opposite. It's important to manage stress for yourself...and apparently it's important for your dog that you do, too!

08.01.2022 Shout out to anyone who has access to a dart gun we could borrow? For use by registered Veterinarians from The Village Vet who are headed out to bushfire affected regions. A dart gun is a requisite to enable us to capture, examine and treat injured animals (kangaroos especially). ... Please share!

08.01.2022 We're selling these bad boys for $25 each. Is that a costly cookie?! Hint: it is not. Small business is hard work. It's been a tough fortnight for all of us and we've given thought to many of you recently. ... With help from @luluandsis we've created a cookie driver to support local. Every 2-pack of cookies costs $50 and comes with: - A voucher to the value of $50 for one of the small businesses below - A 1:15 chance of winning your furry delinquent a dental scale and polish to the value of $500 Every 6-pack of cookies costs $150 and comes with: - A voucher to the value of $150 for one of the small businesses below - A 1:4 chance of winning your furry delinquent a dental scale and polish to the value of $500 2-packs @barriocc @gather.braddon @theknoxmadeinwatson @intracbr @thecuppingroom @xorestaurant @threemillsbakery @kyo_coffeeproject @redbrick.coffee @clay.coffee @mocanandgg @whobabysu @capitalbrewing @teddypickerscafe @greasemonkeycanberra 6-packs @highroad.cbr @here.wellbeing @barrochford @w.chaco Did I mention these cookies are freaking delicious? 08.01.2022 Beautiful Katydid completed her chemotherapy course with us this week. She could not have been a more trusting and gentle patient. Bless your cotton socks, Katy. We adore you.

07.01.2022 What about our pet's health in this smoke? A few people have messaged through with this enquiry. The air we're currently breathing is no better for their lungs than it is for ours. The API measured 3859 in Monash this morning, which is fifteen times above hazardous levels. ... Animals at greater risk are those with pre-existing cardiac and respiratory disease (especially bronchitis and asthma). We don't recommend exercising pets under these conditions. We recommend keeping them indoors where possible....maybe Netflix and snuggles. We're open tomorrow from 0800. For any out of hours emergencies, contact CVES in Gunghalin (6225 7257) or ARH in Fyshwick (6280 6344).

05.01.2022 This little bushfire victim currently resides in our burns unit, aka: the cat ward ;) whilst Dr Brooke treats him. It's important that his nutritional requirements are met whilst under our care We need to feed "bush tucker" not junk food. This involves collecting native specimens he'd usually eat, daily.... We're after some assistance... He's after FRESH GROWTH: - Eucalyptus spp especially stringybark (E. tetradonta) and woolybutt (E. miniata) - Black wattle (Acacia auriculiformis), or other any wattle/acacia spp - Ironwood (Erthrophloem chlorstachys) Also: - Sweet potato, corn, strawberries, banana, apple, kiwi fruit, broccoli, pear, orange. His nutritional requirements are currently three times maintenance (his body requires a lot of energy to heal from the burns)... all donations kindly received!!
