25.01.2022 Dandenong Park, 1932 Lonsdale Street runs from the bottom right to top right, with Foster Street running from bottom right to bottom left, and Pultney Street r...unning from bottom left to top left. The creek still mostly ran to its original course circling around the old Drill Hall and Dandenong Baths (pool) located in the top of the picture facing Lonsdale Street. Lonsdale Street running South from Dandenong had not yet been duplicated, note the road narrows considerably as it approaches the old bridge. The original baths, which were built in the creek itself, were opened officially about 1911/12. With the concrete baths next to the drill hall, as pictured, opening about 1925 or 1932/33, after considerable time on construction. At the time of this photo they would have been nearing completion.

25.01.2022 PHOTO FRIDAY NO. 121: (Dalyston/Powlett River) ‘A Walker Railmotor crosses the Powllet River Trestle Bridge in October 1977’. IMAGE CAPTION: ‘Victorian Railway...s 153HP Walker Railmotor 30RM is pictured at crossing the Powlett River Trestle Bridge at Dalyston on Saturday the 22nd of October 1977. During its layover at Wonthaggi, the Rail Tourist Association chartered the 153HP Walker Railmotor for a run up to Anderson and return’. This image was taken by the late Geoff Cargeeg and attributed to the Geelong & South Western Rail Heritage Society Collection. It is also available to view in full on their Flickr collection. IMAGE SOURCE: https://www.flickr.com/photos/gcargeeg/32971222794/ The combination of dairy country and coastal sand dunes, seems like an unlikely thing to work well with railways. However, a short portion of the 30 mile or 48 kilometre branch line from Nyora to Wonthaggi did indeed contain those two environmental features. Dalyston previously situated 133 kilometres from Melbourne by rail was a number of small communities that had a railway station on the Wonthaggi Branch Line although was a lot more accessible to the Bass Coast Highway unlike most between Nyora and Anderson. The station was also known for having a livestock and cattle yard with deliveries and transportation fairly active for a township on the South Gippsland railway line and associated branch lines. Although the station site was a bit of a walk from the actual township on the southern side along Station Street. One relic that allows the public to best recognise that Dalyston had a railway line is the 89 metres in length Powlett River Trestle Bridge. It is located off Daly Street, Dalyston and situated on the down or Wonthaggi side of the former Dalyston railway station. This timber trestle bridge like many others on most South Gippsland lines was rebuilt caused by flooding and extensive weather deterioration. What gives this away is that there is evidence of the original bridge adjacent to the existing structure when the Powlett River flow is lower than average. In addition, the surviving bridge that is used to service the Bass Coast Rail Trail has a combination of timber piles and parallel steel girders to support the timber deck. This bridge replacement and upgrade practice was applied to a large number of original timber trestle bridges in South Gippsland and across Victoria. The late Geoff Cargeeg photographed a typical 1970’s Wonthaggi passenger rail service run by a Victorian Railways 153HP Walker Railmotor crossing the Powlett River Trestle Bridge. The section between Dalyston and Kilcunda to the Mouth of the Powlett Road happened to have low lying land situated on wetlands connected to the Powlett River adjacent to the railway line facing Bass Strait before rising onto the coastal sand dunes into Kilcunda. On this occasion like several prior to withdrawal of the passenger rail services, the Rail Tourist Association chartered the Walker Railmotor for short journeys along the line during what would have typically been its layover period. On this date Saturday the 22nd of October 1977, the 153HP Walker Railcar ran up to Anderson and return.
