19.01.2022 Do Thyroid Symptoms Equal A Diagnosis of Thyroid Disease? Do you have any of the following symptoms? Depression, Weight gain, Fatigue, Feeling cold, Dry skin, Poor concentration, Constipation, Fluid retention? These symptoms are suggestive of an underactive thyroid gland, but they are not diagnostic. Other conditions can mimic these symptoms and it is important to have an accurate diagnosis. There are times when the diagnosis is straightforward, for example I saw an elderly l...ady with burns on her shins from sitting very close to a radiator. She was feeling icy cold, depressed and exhausted. Blood tests confirmed a diagnosis of hypothyroidism and she improved rapidly with thyroid hormone treatment. A lady in her late 40s could tick most of the symptoms on a list of underactive thyroid, but her blood tests were completely normal. A third group of patients have a proven diagnosis of hypothyroidism, but improvement with thyroid hormones is only partial. Why the difference? There are three main reasons. Watch this video to find out why hypothyroid symptoms alone can be due to causes other than an underactive thyroid gland and what you can do about it. 15.01.2022 I was walking past a nursing home on the way to my clinic and passed a patient who works as a carer in the nursing home. She was having a rest break outside for a cigarette smoke - despite a former heart attack. It did make me wonder about her approach to health, especially in the midst of this Covid-19 pandemic. We exchanged greetings and she left me with a well known quote: "It is what it is". Somehow, I felt strangely calm as this quote echoed in my mind. What Does "It Is ...What It Is" Mean? Though theres no official dictionary definition of the phrase, you can figure out the meaning of "It is what it is" based on how it is used. When someone says this, its often an expression of frustration or resigned acceptance of a situation. Its usually used to answer a question that cannot be adequately answered. Accept it and Move On No one knows who first came up with this quote. It seems to be a useful saying that can help you move on from a topic of conversation that is going nowhere. Its also a great way to show acceptance of what has happened and a readiness to forge ahead without dwelling on a past that cannot be changed. How To Manage Stress Which brings me to the topic of Covid-19 and this thread. It seems that nearly everybody is finding the uncertainty and loss of control difficult in one way or another. Some of my introverted patients are relieved that they can stay home and minimise contact with others, however many people are struggling with the lack of face to face contact with friends, family and work colleagues.
