25.01.2022 B is for bandicoot. Southern Brown bandicoot in this instance. This little Aussie digger lives in the forests and woodlands in Tasmania. We found extensive proo...f of their digging and foraging activity in forest area CC160B on the Weld Hill in the Mutual Valley. The Southern brown bandicoot is an ecosystem engineer. It helps aerate the soil and composting of organic matter, creating opportunities for seed penetration and improving carbon sequestration in the soil. They also assist in the spreading of fungi which helps forest nutrient absorption. Bandicoots like many Australian species have undergone several species extinctions due to habitat loss from logging and farming, and predation from cats, dogs and foxes. Of the estimated 12 bandicoot species once present prior to colonisation across Australia, approximately half are now threatened or extinct. Our forests are home to so many critical species that keep our land, water and biodiversity functioning. We know logging destroys habitat and biodiversity. Why we continue this loss making taxpayer subsidised forestry folly is a mystery. Our forests are worth more standing! #bluederbywild #bandicoot #biodiversitymonth #wildlife #rewild #restore #reconnect #bluederby #forests #gondwana #savetassiesforests #biodiversity #worthmorestanding #tassiestyle
24.01.2022 We've just launched a new Wilderness Defence Fund to keep Tasmania's world-class World Heritage wilderness PUBLIC, THRIVING & UNSPOILED. With your help, we wil...l see a change in the government's tourism policy that protects and respects World Heritage wilderness and public national parks, and maybe instead encourages sustainable tourism opportunities in local regional communities - not luxury helicopter accessed accommodation in pristine remote locations for the 1% at the exclusion of everyone else. 24.01.2022 BREAKING: The ranks of Tasmania's extremist ideologues have a new member - Australia's Environment minister, Sussan Ley MP - who has a released a Statement of R...easons, explaining why she has made the Wild Drake privatisation scheme at Lake Malbena a "controlled action". Fundamentally, she recognises that the proposal would degrade wilderness character if it proceeds. Also, her Statement includes reference to a wilderness impact assessment by Tasmania's Parks & Wildlife Service that... reaches exactly the same conclusion as the wilderness impact assessment we commissioned by Martin Hawes. There's now two reports that show that the proposal would degrade wilderness character, as well as impact natural values & heritage values. Good on Sussan.
22.01.2022 Here's the article from the 100th edition FlyLife Magazine by Greg French reiterating why Tasmania's Western Lakes are so special - in fact, globally unique. He...re's the last three paras: "It is important to understand that the Western Lakes is not a thousand separate fisheries, but one discrete fishery. An attack on any portion is an attack on the whole, and an attack on the heart is likely to be mortal. When we walk from a trailhead we all want to feel that we are headed deeper into wilderness, not towards helipads and development. "Fly fishers understand this more than anyone, which is why opposition to privatising and taming the Western Lakes has always transcended political allegiances. "Currently I rank the Western Lakes among the five best fisheries in the world, and as the best wilderness fishery. Make access and fishing easy, and the Western Lakes becomes just another ordinary place like dozens of other ordinary places worldwide." bit.ly/WildernessDefenceFund Fishers & Walkers Against Helicopter Access Tasmania Flyfish Europe Flyfishing Total Flyfisher Zefix FlyFishing #flyfishing Tasmanian National Parks Association
20.01.2022 The Blue Tier has a unique and endangered pre-glacial forest with a unique biodiversity. Much of this ancient old-growth forest is unprotected and is zoned for... logging. There is a hard-working group of volunteers named Blue Derby Wild doing citizen science in the Blue Tier to record and try to preserve what is left of this forest. The information and pictures they gather is added to several natural heritage atlases. They deserve any support you can give them. 18.01.2022 Would you like to see the development at Lake Malbena in the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area go ahead?
17.01.2022 The TWS Lake Malbena appeal will be heard in the Supreme Court of Tasmania next week, on Thursday 2nd Oct. It will cost TWS $60,000 for this action in the court...s. To help pay for this TWS have launched an appeal for a Wilderness Defense Fund - follow this link here. In less than a week a quarter of the amount needed has been raised BUT getting the full amount will not be easy - If 1,000 people donated $60 each (I have just done so), we would reach the full amount. Please consider that by donating you will be helping to preserve a world heritage area (WHA) which has one of the highest value WHAs in the world. and please share this post, with thanks. See more

16.01.2022 STILL SORROW - That feeling of excitement as we caught glimpses of the unmatched scale through the thick understory. Then an overwhelming and absolute wave of h...umility crashes over you while standing quite and still at its base. While there under its branches you dont quite know what exactly that feeling is but it is joyous and gravitational, it draws you closer welcoming you. This tree has totally reset my idea of how big Tasmanias big trees can be. Words like gargantuan, colossal or magnitude all convey size but do not convey its life force, age or resonant energy. Were heading back with Yoav from Giant Tree Expeditions to spend more time with this newest of big tree friends. 14.01.2022 The banner had to come down this morning due to high winds - temporarily. Can anybody suggest other hi-viz locations where we can put the banner, maybe move it around a bit? Thanks.
14.01.2022 Sustainable Timber Tasmania logs old growth forests and giant trees. The recent statements from both the resources minister Guy Barnett and Shane Broard MP that... claim otherwise both clearly appear to be at best misleading to the people of Tasmania. Or when scrutinised with any effort are obviously untrue. This broken down log truck was photographed on Monday 21 September 2020. ABC Hobart Leon Compton ABC

11.01.2022 C is for carbon. Australia's eucalyptus regnan mixed forests have been found by Dr Brendan Mackay of the Australian National University to be the most carbon de...nse in the world. This research calculated the total biomas stored in the trees, plants, decomposing plant material (fallen logs etc) and soil across 132 forests across the world. Regnan eucalyptus mixed forests store more carbon than tropical forests! Dr Mackay points out the critical need to protect our carbon dense forests as an easy and immediate nature based solution to climate change. Not to mention the biodiversity benefits of keeping habitat for our native plants and animal species. In short protecting native forests is climate action. #bluederbywild #climateaction #carbon #rich #forests #eucalyptus #regnan #climatechange #tassiestyle #biodiversitymonth #savetassiesforests #saveourspecies
11.01.2022 Money cant buy me love, but you can put a price on a tree "Using environmental accounting weve investigated the tall, wet forests of Victorias Central Highlands to weigh the competing economic cases for continuing native timber harvesting and creating a Great Forest National Park. But first well explain a little more about environmental accounting, and how we put a price on trees." https://theconversation.com/money-cant-buy-me-love-but-you-
09.01.2022 Devastatingly straightforward letter in today's The Mercury Newspaper Ending the taxpayer-funded destruction of Tasmania's stunningly beautiful high conservatio...n value forests is overdue. Tassie needs to beat Victoria to become Australia's first forested state to go 100% plantation forestry.
08.01.2022 Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Areaa sanctuary for wildlife, a buffer against climate change, and is for all of us to enjoy. Last week, Minister Ley annou...nced that the plan to privatise Halls Island in the World Heritage Area with luxury accommodation and helicopter access would be a controlled action and would be reassessedthis is a welcome development, thanks Minister Ley! During this assessment process its important the Federal Government keeps hearing from people like you that we dont want our World Heritage Wilderness and national parks privatised and degraded. On 30 September will be sending Minister Ley a letter, will you add your name? https://www.wilderness.org.au/Malbena_Letter Image: @tabadge via @Wilderness_aus on Instagram
08.01.2022 When our governments can wantonly destroy our natural heritage and iconic species, I wonder if there is anything that they would not sell. If there is nothing that cannot be sold for profit, then there is nothing that we are prepared to preserve that makes us Tasmanians or Australians. We would be nothing but money - and that would be very sad. One day soon everybody will realise what they are doing and stop, and protect the forests.
08.01.2022 As part of the launch of bit.ly/WildernessDefenceFund we've created some graphics you can download from this public folder: https://drive.google.com//1vlrNc1JlCTKfjq64MNsyNltusxNv1Ms7 Together, we can keep Tasmania's World Heritage wilderness PUBLIC, THRIVING & UNSPOILED for the many, not just the few, including the next generations.
08.01.2022 Exactly the same jarring juxtaposition in Tassie as in Victoria of protected high conservation value forests next door to exactly the same high conservation val...ue forests that are still being logged. We can & must protect these forests - and get our wood & paper from plantations. That's the future. Forest Stewardship Council - FSC Australia & New Zealand
07.01.2022 A is for Astacopsis gouldii. The Tasmanian giant freshwater crayfish, or Lutaralipina in Palawa Kani. It's the largest freshwater crayfish in the world and only... found in rivers below 400m above sea level in northern Tasmania. Including here in north east Tasmania on the northern slopes of the Blue Tier and Mutual Valley where logging is taking place, and is set to increase. Juvenile astacopsis live in shallow forested creeks, and when they are silted up from logging, farming and fossicking the young crayfish are pushed out of their river habitat and cannot reach maturity - up to 60 years old. Logging in water catchments such as Main Creek in the Mutual Valley, where young astacopsis have been recorded, is destroying their homes. We are losing this unique endangered species as we lose forested water ways. We need to halt native forest logging and start restoring our biodiversity. Our forests are worth more standing! #bluederbywild #bluederby #bluetier #crayfish #forest #logging #biodiversitymonth #savetassiesforests #saveourspecies #astacopsisgouldii #giants #tassiestyle
07.01.2022 The Commonwealth decision to actually do an assessment of the Lake Malbena proposal confirms that the Management of Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service are way ...off track. They have been politicised and they tried to avoid a Commonwealth assessment by splitting this project into 2 stages. That failed. But even more disturbing is that they were happy to lease an entire island for a development that had no approvals, it was nothing more than a few words on a piece of paper when Elise Archer MP signed over Halls Island for the price of a rubbish tip. Thats just ridiculous. Parks Management should be held to account for this debacle and they should stop devoting their already stretched resources to fighting for heli tourism and private developments in our World Heritage Areas. Donate to the Wilderness war chest (link below) and be assured, we can end this and Parks can end their marriage with the Tourism Industry Council Tasmania and get back on track. Malbena Matters! 07.01.2022 From today's The Mercury Newspaper (a copy of which you should buy). We didn't use the word vindicate so not sure why it's in 'quotes' but, bottom line, the Co...mmonwealth Environment Minister Sussan Ley MP has recognised wilderness and World Heritage values are at stake and that wilderness IS a World Heritage value. The first time an environment minister has recognised this so pretty encouraging.
06.01.2022 Few people in Tasmania or beyond know more or are as passionate about wilderness as the legendary wilderness photographer Grant Dixon. Remind yourself just how beautiful Tasmanian wilderness truly is by checking out Grant's new book, Winter Light.
05.01.2022 Suzanne Milthorpe of TWS delivers a great submission to the Senate Inquiry on the EPBC. If you are writing a submission yourself, this is a must watch.
05.01.2022 Full, high-energy & committed public meeting yesterday at Miena's Great Lake Community Centre. Speakers were Sharnie Read, representing Tasmania's Aboriginal Co...mmunity, Nick Sawyer from Tasmanian National Parks Association, Tom Allen from Wilderness Society Tasmania, Brett Smith, founder of Fishers and Walkers Against Helicopter Access, Craig Garland, independent political candidate and fisher and Greg French, fly fishing expert. Meeting agree to 1. Contact [email protected] and [email protected] to tell them not to backflip on their previous public commitment to add a 'public appeal rights' amendment to the govt's Major Projects Bill - the debate is in Parliament on Wednesday. 2. to put in submissions to the federal environment minister Sussan Ley when submissions open - watch this space - showing how the Wild Drake proposal does not meet the threshold to respect and protect World Heritage and wilderness values. bit.ly/WildernessDefenceFund

03.01.2022 PERPETUAL STOKE! Tasmania has the biggest trees in the Southern Hemisphere. 03.01.2022 Here's a copy of email we've just sent Rebecca White MP and the Tasmanian Labor team about Labor's proposed amendments to the Major Projects Bill that would giv...e a voice to local communities. There's apparently now a risk that Labor could roll over on its proposed amendments in the Upper House because of Government pressure. That would be a tragedy - for local communities as much as Tasmania's wild places - the Bill allows for developments in national parks and for them to be fast tracked. 02.01.2022 COVID Capacity at Miena to once again stand for our wild places. There is no Social License for trashing our World Heritage. Minister for Parks Roger Jaensch MP can end their trash our parks policy. People dont support it ! Where are you Roger?
02.01.2022 Good to see Labor Craig Farrell MLC spending time listening to community anger and determination at a packed community centre! 01.01.2022 Great shot by D Broun of Fishers & Walkers Against Helicopter Access Tasmania of vote on motion put at Miena meeting on Sunday. 01.01.2022 Your personal to do list ! 1. Tasmanian Labor is on the brink of backflipping on their public commitment to maintain rights of appeal in "Major Projects" legis...lation proposed to pass very soon. This includes "major projects" inside World Heritage Areas. Please tell Rebecca White MP that Labor should stick to their word. It's not a lot to ask! Phone and email here. https://becwhite.com/index.php/get-in-touch 2. When the Commonwealth Government call for public submissions we need to get massive numbers. Sussan Ley MP should recognise that the impact on World Heritage values is unacceptable and she can reject it. 3. The opposition to Malbena and privatising our wild places is getting stronger and bigger. Take a look at the ABC Hobart poll from yesterday, last count was in excess of 800 comments and 99% were dead against it. Have you actually met anyone who says this is a good idea? 4. Tourism operators and members of the Tourism Industry Council Tasmania can and should speak out and use their voice because sending choppers into our wild places has no public support and it's the opposite of Tassies "brand". Who does the TICT represent? 5. There are plenty of alternatives to developing the heart of our wild places. There are plenty of places on public and private land that have road access that could provide excellent tourism opportunities. 6. The Wilderness Society and Tasmanian National Parks Association Supreme Court appeal on October 2nd and you can donate to this here: https://supporter.wilderness.org.au/donation-pages/tws-tas 7. We filled the Miena Hall and the locals at the Great Lake Community Centre can put on a great spread. THANK YOU! Image: Greg French telling everyone to "Maintain the Rage" because that's what will end this! Have you written to the Parks Minister Roger Jaensch MP to express your outrage? http://www.rogerjaensch.com.au/contact-roger/ Please do. Thanks.
