22.01.2022 From the ATO Business Newsroom Increased thresholds to support your business The government's new measures to help businesses withstand and recover from the economic affect of COVID-19 recently became law.... From 12 March 2020 businesses with an aggregated turnover of less than $500 million can access these two measures. 1. Enhancing the instant asset write-off: The threshold amount for each asset is $150,000 (up from $30,000). This applies to assets first used or installed ready for use from 12 March 2020 until 30 June 2020. Businesses can claim an immediate deduction (business portion only) for multiple assets, new or second hand, provided each asset costs less than $150,000. Other thresholds and turnovers apply before this date. 2. Backing business investment: Also known as accelerated depreciation, this measure lets you claim deductions on certain new depreciating assets at an accelerated rate. The asset must be a new depreciating asset that you acquired and first used or installed ready for business use from 12 March 2020 until 30 June 2021. Your business must not have already applied other depreciation deductions or the instant asset write-off to the asset. Remember, registered tax agents can help you with your tax.

20.01.2022 New laws can make directors personally liable for GST The government recently passed new legislation designed to strengthen laws to "crack down on illegal phoenixing activity by dodgy business operators who try to avoid their obligations to their customers, employees and creditors." In particular, the changes allow the ATO to collect estimates of anticipated GST liabilities, and make company directors personally liable for their company’s GST liabilities in certain circumstan...ces (basically by including these liabilities in the director penalty notice regime). Importantly, the expansion of the director penalty notice regime to include GST liabilities will commence from 1 April 2020. 18.01.2022 From the ATO Business Newsroom Cash flow boost for employers From 28 April 2020, eligible businesses will receive a tax-free cash flow boost of between $20,000 and $100,000 through credits in the activity statement system, when they lodge all relevant activity statements. This is to help during the economic downturn associated with COVID-19.... You do not need to apply for the cash flow boost. All you need to do is lodge your upcoming activity statements. If your business is eligible, the credit will be automatically applied. It's important to know, even if you lodge early, you will not be credited the cash flow boost before 28 April 2020. For your business to be eligible, you must: - employ staff - have registered an ABN on 12 March 2020 or before, and your ABN continues to be active - have an aggregated annual turnover under $50 million (generally based on prior year turnover) - have made eligible payments you are required to withhold from (even if the amount you need to withhold is zero). 08.01.2022 New super guarantee amnesty On 6 March 2020, the government introduced a superannuation guarantee ('SG') amnesty. This amnesty allows employers to disclose and pay previously unpaid super guarantee charge ('SGC'), including nominal interest, that they owe their employees, for quarter(s) starting from 1 July 1992 to 31 March 2018, without incurring the administration component ($20 per employee per quarter) or Part 7 (double SGC) penalty.... In addition, payments of SGC made to the ATO after 24 May 2018 and before 7 September 2020 will be tax deductible. Employers who have already disclosed unpaid SGC to the ATO between 24 May 2018 and 6 March 2020 don’t need to apply or lodge again. Employers who come forward from 6 March 2020 need to apply for the amnesty. The ATO will continue to conduct reviews and audits to identify employers not paying their employees SG. 06.01.2022 New vacant land tax measures A new 'vacant land' measure limits the deductibility of costs incurred on or after 1 July 2019 (i.e., from the 2020 income year) that relate to holding vacant land, even if the land in question was first held before that date. Importantly, however, the new provisions include (amongst other exceptions) a 'carrying on a business' exception. This exception means that the limitations will not apply to the extent that the 'vacant land' is used, or ava...ilable for use in carrying on a business, including a business carried on by either the taxpayer (i.e., the owner of the land) or by a specified related entity. 01.01.2022 From the ATO Business Newsroom COVID-19: wages subsidy We understand many businesses may be concerned about retaining employees due to the economic impacts of COVID-19 (coronavirus).... To help employers, the government has introduced the JobKeeper Payment, delivered through the ATO. Here are the steps you need to take to get ready: Check if you, as an employer, and your nominated employees meet the eligibility requirements. Notify eligible employees that you (their employer) intend to participate in the JobKeeper scheme. Send your eligible employees the JobKeeper Employee Nomination Notice to complete and return to you. Confirm with eligible employees that they agree to you being the primary employer to receive JobKeeper payments. Keep the Employee Nomination Form on file for five years. Pay the minimum $1,500 to each eligible employee per JobKeeper fortnight. The first fortnight starts on 30 March and ends on 12 April. Alternatively, you can make one combined payment of $3,000 for the first two fortnights (paid by the end of April 2020). Enrol for JobKeeper from 20 April using the Business Portal and authenticate with myGovID. Subscribe to updates on the ATO website so we can let you know when new information is available. Sole traders and other businesses with self-employed individuals are eligible for the JobKeeper Payment for one business participant if their business has experienced a downturn. They will need to meet other eligibility criteria, like having an ABN on 12 March 2020. You can find out more about eligibility for sole traders through the ATO's JobKeeper Payment scheme page.
