24.01.2022 Actually traditional masks are generally featured. For salome we had paul Hamilton 3D print the half masks ( which are amazing) and the Baptist head along with a few props. And we have 13 masks yes one is highly jewelled. The acting is equally amazing. The question we asked was. What do you want to see more of at the Phoenix theatre the answers were in order 1. More locally written stories. 2. More alternative theatre styles. 3. Non musical Youth theatre. 4. More cabaret ...style performance. 5. More classic works. No one answered more musicals

23.01.2022 Salome first costume run went well, set starts spearing tomorrow this is a very powerful and sometimes funny play. Tickets on sale through our website www.phoenixtheatre.net.au

23.01.2022 https://www.trybooking.com/BKVNN bookings are open for Salome. Dreamlike and often surreal, Wilde's one-act tragedy is, on one level, the story of the stepdaughter of King Herod dancing the dance of seven veils for the head of John the Baptist. On a deeper level, it is about sexual politics and power games, which Salome used to getting her way. famous for the dance of the seven veils for the head of John the Baptist Salome uses her beauty to manipulate the men around her and ...ultimately pays the price. the wings of the angel of deal are creating a wind in the palace. This production is influenced by Aubrey Beardsley's drawings, with the unchanged text of Wilde. exotic and all the glory of Herod's Court this is a feast for the eyes as well as the ears. the expression "to out Herod Herod is taken literally with this production adding to the opulence of the royal setting. WARNING. mature content but there is NO nudity. The event will be conducted COVID Safe. Please contact us for any concerns. Between Friday 28 August 2020 8:00 PM and Saturday 5 September 2020 8:00 PM

21.01.2022 Archive opening night this week is the Tempest by William Shakespeare with original music by the very talented Jeremy Boulton. This spectacular masque was the last confirmed play we have written by Shakespeare alone, we know he did collaborate after Tempest and possibly wrote a version of the Don Quixote story among others that are now unfortunately lost. the Tempest should be a spectacle as it was written to be played under lighting with special effects for King James. this production had such a talented cast and foreshadowed our move towards more mask based performances with our Theatre Visage Troupe, (check the Mercury for more). Tempest is a complex play full of twists and subplots so many I am sure we will return to explore it again sometime in the future.

16.01.2022 just a reminder for those who asked. we spray the whole theatre after every show and rehearsal to ensure your safety, every common surface is wiped and hand sanitizers are at various points in the theatre. social distancing is in place and contact tracing through our booking system is also active. we hope this time passes soon and we can once again open to full capacity houses.

14.01.2022 UBU ROI and phoenix are coping a lot of negative abuse (some very nasty stuff) from Trump supporters and far right people. the show is a silly satire we just use trump on the poster because it was funny and the similarities to UBU are pretty obvious. abuse will be deleted, we are here for fun not to influence an election in America, so don't bother us with your hatred. if you like him so much go over and vote there :)

13.01.2022 MEET THE CAST OF DAMIENS WAKE With only four days until opening night, tickets are selling fast! 12.01.2022 Opening this Friday looking so very good. Bookings essential for COVID safe procedures

12.01.2022 Already causing a stir UBU is about a child minded dictator who takes over the country of Pogland and destroys it before running away. UBU is like Macbeth done by south park and Monty Python, while it pokes fun at all dictators and power hungry leaders it does bear a striking resemblance to one in particular. this outrageous comedy was written in 1898 and is in performance somewhere in the world at any given time. while basically a silly comedy with clowns it does have a bit of a message but mostly its about nasty people and how we should poke fun at them. Playing OC 29 - Nov 7 Tickets $15 and $20. dress up on Halloween and eat chocolate with us.

12.01.2022 Great opening weekend for salome. 2 sold out shows only 2 shows left for tickets, as closing night is sold out already. The Angel of death said get a move on or Ill come visit you and beat my wings.

11.01.2022 Visage is the new alternative theatre arm of The Phoenix Theatre, we felt it important to create a seperate part of Phoenix for more experimental forms of theatre and to Focus on mask work, this not replacing the Phoenix Theatre Company shows but will run along side it, often with shorter runs and smaller productions. our first full Visage show is UBU ROI in October / November

11.01.2022 We have joined Instagram!!! Be sure to jump on and give it a follow to make sure you don’t miss anything that’s happening here at Phoenix!!!

08.01.2022 archive opening night is Windy Gully. Wendy Richardson's amazing play commemorating the mount Kembla mine disaster of 1902. a Beautifully written play touching on the lives of this terrible disaster. we are re mounting Windy Gully in 2022 for 120th anniversary of the disaster. theatre like this should be part of our local theatrical landscape and we intend to bring more local stories to the Phoenix Stage in the future.

The project has already seeded itself into a bigger scope ( mercury article soon) this is the first mask work film by cathy bates. The Mirror - Sylvia Plath When you reach a certain age, you are no longer seen for yourself - your face becomes a mirror that reflects the perceptions and prejudices of others. We fear aging, but the marks of age are badges of a life, of wisdom earned, and should be cherished. Honoured.
