19.01.2022 The natural earthy tones of this vintage hand woven Kilim rug are in perfect harmony with the wooden frame of this antique sprung chair, arent they? This is the essence of The Twelve Chairs: synthesis of East and West, natural materials (carved wood, wool, horse hair, straw...) for a unique piece which took hours of mindful work. I find graphic pattern on the chair surprisingly modern.... Both chair and rug have respectable history behind and have a few repairs. 15.01.2022 This post is not about a new or completed project. Nor is it about a new find. It is about how I beat the #sunkcostfallacy Sunk cost fallacy is a tricky mechanism in our mind that makes us eat all the food we paid for in the restaurant even if we are full, or watching a movie we dont like until the end because we paid for the ticket. You get the idea. It is actually completely irrational: past investment shouldnt prevent us from reassessing the situation afresh - but it do...es. I got these 4 chairs for free but spent a few hours driving to pick them up, sanding them and removing the fabric from one of them. Then I got other projects, moved, finished a few and learned from experience what time it takes me to restore a spring chair completely, what sells and what doesnt (or takes much longer to sell), and that you need storage both for unfinished and finished projects (and I only have limited room - so #opportunitycost comes in, too: I cant take more beautiful pieces because Im storing the old ones I got). So I reassessed all the chairs I had in storage and decided to part with those four. Luckily I new about sunk cost fallacy so I could reason myself. I had overwhelming interest after putting them on FB marketplace (14 people contacted me!) and an unexpected hug from the person who picked them up. Im glad they wont go to the landfill - this was the wish of the person I picked them up from, and they will be redone for a new life in a new home. I envision it re-upholstered in emerald green velvet or blue ikat - or the fabric of your choice! This surprisingly comfortable sprung chair would be perfect in the bedroom (to put your socks on), in the hallway or around the fireplace. It would also look lovely in the children room as part of the reading spot - perfect for the little body to curl on... and absorb those beautiful carved details to be later remembered as that chair from my childhood! 13.01.2022 Original Mid century chair fully restored and re-upholstered with East Timor hand woven Tais cloth. I left the timber unvarnished after removing the old varnish - just stained it. Love its silky touch feeling. It goes well with this colorful Tais, doesnt? Commission of @easttimorheartsfund for a charitable donator who earlier bought another chair I restored at their charity auction. 10 hours work.... Thank you to beautiful and generous Ana for making this possible - again. P. S. Ana who donated the Tais cloth just gave me some interesting ethnographic information. She told that the two roasters (pictured on this tais) are a traditional representation in the Timorese culture (it has been for many centuries). In Tetum they are called futu-manu (cock fight). The traditional sport of cock-fighting is a popular masculine past-time/gambling across East Timor. Cockfights are held on any social occasion when men get together, from the spontaneous to more formal occasions or even sometimes part of weekly markets. Many people have mixed feeling about this type of sport (including me - I dont like it...). But it's a strong part of East Timorese culture. - Ana told. See more
