25.01.2022 "Hindsight is anything but 20/20" since 1938, the lives of two groups of men have been studied and tracked (brain scans, blood tests, family interviews, questions, psychological studies). These men are now in their 90's; the study continues. What have we learned? what are the lessons here? The clearest message is this good relationships keep us happier and healthier. Its the quality of these relationships that matters. Lean into your relationships; do something new, reach out. Even though relationships are hard and messy, complicated and complex, "a good life is built with good relationships". #psychologymelbourne #psychology #psychiatry #happy #healthy #relationships

23.01.2022 In Psychology the term Goupthink is used to explained the phenomenon of group unanimity, which is closely related to conformist behaviour. Sometimes our social attitudes come at the expense of objective critical evaluation and sound decision making; groups will typically rely on common knowledge rather than unique sources of information, leaving the group deprived of any new ideas and opinions. Indeed, groupthink can work in our favour - take Juries for example: people ge...nerally make good decisions because they are free to contribute opinions that are not swayed by peer pressure. At large however, group decision making will often go without any consideration of alternative perspectives and sometimes miss out on important details. Group Polarisation is an extension of this; when group members flock towards the most popular positions held by dominant individuals in any group setting. Although this behaviour is not always a bad thing, it serves as a threat to society, as it sets the foundations up for brainwashing and cults. The best way to avoid these negative consequences of group conformity is to encourage active dissent amongst organisations and social groups alike -- persuade or stimulate a debate or critical discussion around critical issues or ideas; this will nurture independent thinking. 20.01.2022 We all have a different understanding of how our personality is defined; or the concept of personality in general. However, for psychologists, the meaning of this is less subjective. Personality is the pattern of thoughts, behaviour and feelings that make up an individual, and are considered to be relatively stable over time. While this pattern may indeed determine which leisure activity you like to engage in, it also influences many unseen parts of our lives such as our values and attitudes. Considering how an individuals personality can have a big impact on how a person experiences the world, it is understandable that this has long been a topic of interest. https://thethreeseas.com.au/what-psychologists-mean-by-per/

20.01.2022 We might call it the greatest virtue, love. We seek it, hold it, long for it, and some of us lose it only to start craving it once again. It is a fascinating and complex human trait, that is a mystery to many. Is it real or imagined? We feel it, yet remain unable to come up with a universal explanation for it. Whether unrequited, unattained, or simply undefined, the thing we call love is usually confusing and complicated, intangible and unequivocal. Though there may be no end to relationships marked by mutual incomprehension, we need as much logic as we do romance when it comes to succeeding in love. #whatislove #lovecounselling #psychologymelbourne #psychology #philosophy

19.01.2022 A fantastic talk by Scientist, Lisa Fledman Barrett emotions are 'built' and not 'built-in'. We have the capacity to turn down the dial on emotional discomfort: Its all about "changing the ingredients your brain uses to make emotions". Your brain will search for an explanation for certain physical sensations in your body to explain what caused those sensations. In the instance that your brain may predict 'anxiety', you have the power to train your brain to experience something else, like, 'energised determination' which will change how you react. We are not at the mercy of our emotions, they are created by us, and therefore we have the ability to control them. Enjoy! #emotions #psychology #psychologymelbourne #counselling #changeyourthinking

16.01.2022 "Therapists are the last people to judge; their concept of a normal human being is far more expansive than that held by society at large. They know how unusual and surprising we are, especially around sex and anxiety. Their whole training takes them into the recesses of their own and others minds. They know how surprising we can all be; it doesn't frighten them, it intrigues and motivates them. They are in the end, interested in mental health; that is, helping out" The School of Life

14.01.2022 "Listening doesnt mean agreeing, but it does show you care" most of the time when our ideas are questioned it can come across as criticism or judgement, when really its a bid for human connection and often a sign of appreciation and respect. Learning to tolerate the subtle (and sometimes annoying) "why did you..", and "it might be better if..", either at work, home, or in your personal life, is a necessary skill; it allows you (and the other/s) to develop healthy patterns of disagreement and "radical truthfulness". Have a read below, and by all means we encourage you to share your thoughts and ideas, here!

14.01.2022 The way we form relationships is owed, in part, to the mother-child relationship we experienced as infants. Our attachment style is developed early on in our childhood, and teaches us what relationships are, what we should expect from others, and whether relationships (of any kind) are worthwhile. It seems unfair to that we didn't get a choice in this, right? Heres the good news, you can change your attachment style. With conscious effort and perhaps the help of a therapist, ...you can learn to be more 'secure' in your relationships and develop a healthier attachment. To read about attachment types in relationships, click the links below, then read the article link provided "attachment type combinations in relationships" Secure https://buff.ly/2EPIacl Anxious - Preoccupied https://buff.ly/2EMQqtH Fearful - Avoidant https://buff.ly/2ELZZca Dismissive - Avoidant https://buff.ly/2EMVKxc

14.01.2022 Anyone and everyone could use a little extra support in coping with certain challenges and stressful situations. Research suggests that putting our feelings into words has a significant therapeutic effect on the brain. Talking about our worries and verbalising our thoughts, even those that seem utterly insignificant, can help us better understand our moods, behaviours, and how to manage them. Simply 'talking' can make our sadness, anger, anxiety, and pain less intense. Do thi...s: start thinking in words about your emotions. Label your emotions. Write them down, or speak them aloud. You might experience a subtle healing process; the part of your brain responsible for fear and worry begins to dial down, so too does the response in the brain that triggers negative feelings. You may want to further this by seeing a professional counsellor, psychologist or life coach to guide you, and set you up with tools to help you cope with life challenges. See more

12.01.2022 Research by Michaela Dewar (et al) found that a brief (10 minute) wakeful rest following new verbal learning enhances memory for at least 7 days. So here's a top tip: after reading each piece of material you need to learn - rest quietly with your eyes closed for 10 minutes in a darkened room -- "In this age of information overload, there are few opportunities to sit back and rest. However, as demonstrated by our findings, post-learning resting can be highly beneficial if one wishes to retain new information over the long term." Research can be found here:

11.01.2022 Relationship therapist, Esther Perel Just as we have marriage ceremonies to mark the beginning of a union, we also need rituals to mark the end. A marriage is the nexus of an entire life history, memories, habits, experiences, children, friends, family, celebrations, losses, homes, trips, holidays, treasures, jokes, pictures. Why throw all of this out and treat the relationship, in the poetic words of Marguerite Yourcenar, like an abandoned cemetery where lie, unsung and unhonored, the dead whom they have ceased to cherish?

11.01.2022 A Chinese saying Chi Ku Shi Fu (eating bitterness is good fortune) highlights the idea that there is the opportunity for wisdom and growth in suffering everybody suffers, but rather than resisting these challenges, embrace them here lies the key to resilience.

11.01.2022 Personality and motivational psychologist, Brian R. Little "The greatest value in thinking of personality as 'doing projects' rather than 'having traits' is in three powerful words: potential for change."We can consciously choose and adapt our projects in ways that we cannot change our traits. But that doesnt mean we can leave our traits back on shore, speeding freely across the water toward a self shaped by projects alone. Our projects and our traits are connected.

08.01.2022 Research suggests that genes play a critical role in developing Major Depression; the neurotransmitters serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine, and the transporter genes for each respective transmitter are closely associated with depression. Those who suffer from depression are more likely to have inherited 2 copies of the stress sensitive transporter gene than those who may have inherited another version of the gene. That said, the research is suggestive that a duplicate of the... gene is merely a marker for how the individual may cope with negative emotions, and NOT necessarily related to stressful life events that may contribute to depressive symptoms, nor in direct relationship with depression itself. Depression is very complex. One who is able to cope with negative emotions and stress, is not necessarily immune to depression, in fact no one is. Depression can strike at any moment, and happen to anyone. It's important that you seek help if you are suffering. Its common for individuals to assume they'll just 'get over it' or 'it will pass' - meanwhile the condition becomes worse, and our resilience to it lessens. Please don't suffer in silence! Help is available if you need. See more

Couples therapy is very helpful for improving the relationship and reducing this strain however many couples avoid therapy because its either too difficult to talk about or they dont want any more conflict. The Salus Approach Workshop provides couples with an important first step that is both safe from conflict and informative enough to make some important changes to reduce the emotional strain in the short ter...m. 06.01.2022 Knowledge is learning something every day. Wisdom is letting go of something every day. Julian Treasure goes through, what he refers to as, the 'four leeches' - emotional drivers that manage to suck the life out of communication: Looking good, being right, people pleasing, and fixing. Try and identify at least one that may be a hinderance to your daily communication at work, home, or in your personal life becoming conscious of these habits is the first step in reducing their power. #mentalhealth #counselling #psychology #psychologist

06.01.2022 Our surroundings may directly impact our personality and psychology. How we are brought up, the cultural background we come from, and the people we interact with on a daily basis all shape us into the individuals we are. Consider these long term changes that travelling may have on your mental state and your relationships.

05.01.2022 Statistics tell us that Anxiety and panic are among the most common mental disorders in Australia, with only one third of sufferers seeking treatment each year. The average age for onset of anxiety disorders in Australia is age 11, and panic age 5. With such a high prevalence, its important to promote treatment options for those that suffer, and reverse the stigma attached to the condition. As anxiety can seep into other conditions such as depression and mood disorders, finding the right treatment option is dependant on the level of impairment on the individual. Anxiety can often take on physical symptoms which can be so intense and crippling that they interfere with daily living. If the symptoms get to this point of debilitation, then it might be time to speak to a professional who can set you up with tools to manage the disorder.

04.01.2022 Relationship researcher, Eli J. Finkel In modern societies, we can have financial security, cohabitation, sex, love, children and more without being married. This makes the institution less essential and much more flexible. So what is marriage for? Most of us havent thought seriously about what were seeking from a relationship. Sure, we probably want love, sex and companionship. Chances are, we prefer a partner who brings out the best in us. But these thoughts tend to be vague, and we rarely think about the elements in the marital buffet that were not choosing, which is required if we want to focus our resources on the elements that we are choosing.

03.01.2022 Read this! (if you want - or need) -- The Wizard of Oz and Other Narcissists: Coping with the One-Way Relationship in Work, Love, and Family. Amazon Review: Every day headlines are filled with examples of narcissistic individuals in positions of power who are nothing more than impostors plundering and wreaking havoc on the lives of others. From the financial barons of Wall Street to our elected officials in government, we are confronted daily with narcissists and the self-se...rving systems that enable them. Helping people reclaim their lives from this sinister exploitative force is the mission behind Payson's book, The Wizard of Oz and Other Narcissists: Coping with the One-Way Relationship in Work, Love, and Family. Using simple metaphors from the American classic, The Wizard of Oz, Payson illustrates how Dorothy's journey captures all the seductive illusions and challenges that occur when we encounter the narcissist. Empowering the reader with the ABCs of unhealthy narcissism and the unique problems that occur when a person becomes involved with the narcissist, Payson gives step-by-step practical tools to identify, protect, and heal from these destructive relationships. Largely un-addressed in the psychology and self-help literature, this ground breaking book offers hope and help to those who have been drawn into these devastating relationships. She includes illuminating case studies that identify the problems that occur in the different types of relationships, from co-workers, to friends, to parents, to lovers. Readers employing these insights and skills will find new abilities to identify and protect against the narcissist's manipulations and take back control of their lives. #psychology #melbournepsychology #thethreeseasclinic #narcissists #love #relationships

02.01.2022 Psychopathology is an extremely complex and broad scope. Mental illness typically presents as a persons inability to adapt to their environment; to put it simply, they struggle to cope with everyday life. This breakdown in adaptation may be in conjunction with of a host of different shortcomings and factors, such as: How statistically rare the condition is; Subjective distress; Level of impairment; Societal disapproval; Biological dysfunction - to name a few. The symptoms ass...ociated with mental illness will differ from person to person, and be dependant on factors mentioned above, which is why it is difficult to give a clear cut criteria for what is normal and what is abnormal in psychopathology. Depending on the symptoms presented, a psychologist or psychiatrist may be able to offer a formal diagnoses for mental illness, however; as stated earlier, it will be entirely dependant on the aforementioned variables. For major mental disorders, such as schizophrenia, a formal diagnosis is beneficial, and helps the clinician predict how the individual might respond to treatment. Diagnosis may also take into consideration: the natural history of the client, personality measures, and perhaps even lab testing to assess biological findings (neurotransmitter levels). Not every person who sees a Psychologist or Psychiatrist will undergo assessments of this nature; a professional will be able to dictate whether or not a categorical explanation for a persons symptoms is ultimately going to exert positive or negative effects of the individuals behaviour and perceptions.
