22.01.2022 We all love a good lawn but I think this guy was a bit blinded by his love for lawn
21.01.2022 What an amazing concept, sculpting living trees into furniture and harvesting them for use.
20.01.2022 If you are looking for something with outstanding fragrance these are currently flowering and an absolute delight (unless it causes you hay fever???) plus they are hardy.
19.01.2022 Well the solstice is upon us and our days will get longer from here on. With the angle of the sun being at its lowest this time of the year it’s a great time to take note of the shadow lines at your house so you know which areas get sun and which don’t. Taking photos at 9am 12pm and 3pm will give a great reference for any future plant placement. This tip also goes for the rest of the year with other key times being the equinox in 3 months and the summer solstice in 6 months just before Christmas.
16.01.2022 4 WEEKS TO A PICTURE PERFECT LAWN I was glad to find out the owner still had the photos/video of this work completed Christmas Eve 2017 as the images we had were lost. The grass was layed Christmas Eve and this video was taken 27 days later. When I first turned up the yard was a totally blank slate from fence to fence... I mean pure dust bowl. Check out the photos in the comments to see what it looked like before plus there’s an extra little something we added for the kids a few months later.
13.01.2022 Out with the old and in with the new. What a difference this makes to the feel of the place. Stratco fence in ‘gun metal grey’ colour with the treated hardwood sleepers painted to match
13.01.2022 Not that we need a reason to get out in the garden.
10.01.2022 Wishing Everyone a safe and Happy Easter. From the Ace of Spades
09.01.2022 April 1st so don’t be fooled today!!! Unfortunately I was called out to fix someone else’s terrible work a while ago, the owner had payed someone to turf the lawn and the person who was contracted to do the work was clearly out of their depth. Solution- spray and remove all of the couch as it was a poor choice for the amount of shading the area would receive in winter, prepare and enrich the soil, Lay the buffalo turf (Prestige) correctly, place a curved edging to define t...he garden bed and just as importantly as doing the work to the highest standard, tidy up the area so it looked amazing! Result- a VERY happy client and another quality job from The Ace of Spades Have a great April
07.01.2022 A WORD OF WARNING check out the pics of the damage that a root system can do and an explanation of some pitfalls with selecting the correct plant for the position. Correct selection of plants/trees with consideration to their location in relation to services and infrastructure is a very important factor when selecting what to plant in a space. In this instance the use of golden cane palms next to the paved pool area makes for a tropical setting however the roots on these ar...e very invasive and travel horizontally a long distance. The roots of this one had penetrated the small space between the pavers and the concrete slab, once these thin roots penetrate the space they then thicken and the effect as you can see separates the tiles from the concrete by breaking the bond between the bedding and the concrete. Other factors to consider with plants is underground services especially plumbing (the roots can do the same and get into pipes) and driveways/paths where the roots thicken and jack the concrete up substantially. Other things to consider is overhead services such as phone and power lines and the often overlooked mature size of the tree, not just height but it’s width too. All too often I see trees planted too close to structures for the size the tree will mature to. For this job the client chose to expand the garden area, cutting the concrete slab and installing root guard to contain the root system as they were insistent on keeping the palms. The surrounding loose pavers were then prepared to be reused and any replacement pavers were used from the excess which had been kept on site (another great tip-buy 5-10% more than you need and keep as spares in case you can’t source them in the future, same goes for tiles etc.) the replacement pavers were accurately cut and installed followed by grouting them to finish the work. 06.01.2022 Spring is here, remember it’s a great time to look at your fertilising regime as there’s some warmer days coming which equals rapid growth. A slow release fertiliser should see you through 3 months easily with the odd liquid fertiliser now and then. Remember to follow the directions on the label and more is not necessarily better and can actually be detrimental if too much is applied. Water in well and make sure it’s not sitting on the leaves after watering in. Also check with your nurseryman that the fertiliser is suited to the particular plants as there’s a few plants that need specific fertilisers. If your soil is very dry an application of a wetting agent will help the dry soil to accept the water and therefore the nutrients from the fertiliser. Happy gardening
06.01.2022 pH Probably the most important thing to get right in any garden or lawn. Incorrect pH levels can cause nutrients to be locked out, meaning that they will not be able to be absorbed by the plant even if they are present in the soil or fertiliser. The majority of plants like a slightly acidic soil just below neutral (around 6-7pH) however there are a few that buck the trend and like an alkaline soil (above 7) Find out what your plants prefer and test the soil, making adjustments as required, before testing again to confirm they pH is within the optimum range.
05.01.2022 Mulching is absolutely vital when we have such hostile conditions. It’s been such an incredibly dry summer but it doesn’t have to take its toll on your garden. If you haven’t mulched you should seriously consider it. Installing irrigation and mulch into this garden will help keep these plants not only survive but help them to thrive in these tough conditions and the cost of mulching is a great investment in water saving not to mention saving some plants. If you need any help keeping your garden green don’t wait, be sure to message us or call 0403 121 122
04.01.2022 Another before Christmas job completed and once again another over the moon client. At The Ace Of Spades we pride ourselves on doing every job to an impeccably high standard.
03.01.2022 Another little conversion for this long term client, this section has been done in a couple of stages as requested by the client and is now complete and ready to rock. Retaining blocks are set upon a concrete foundation, hardwood edging, topped off with some artificial turf installed on a levelled and compacted base of crusher dust.
02.01.2022 Bindis are a real pain in the... foot and they should be getting close to setting seed which is of course the prickles we hate to experience. If you have them and haven’t sprayed for them yet, now is a good time before the seeds form. Remember to check that any sprays you use are compatible with your grass variety especially if you have a buffalo variety. Avoid spray drift onto desired plants and avoid spraying in windy conditions or when rain is expected within 6 hours (always check the label for directions of use, correct mix ratios, application rate per m2 and safety precautions)
