21.01.2022 my S K I N S T O R Y So many of my clients compliment me on my skin, but keeping my acne away has been a real process over the years. We tend to associate acne with our teenage years, but did you know that around 25% of people suffer with adult onset acne? I am actually really thankful for this struggle that started when I was 13yrs old, as it is the sole reason my passion for dermatology and cosmetics began. I started off researching ways to deal with breakouts and tried a...ll of those weird and wonderful solutions we find on Doctor google. I discovered that the mythical acne cures DONT work, normal facials made my skin worse and nothing made looking in the mirror any easier.. until I found medical grade solutions in my 20s. I began my Dermal Science studies in 2010 & started to learn about how acne develops and how the skin responds to certain actives such as chemical exfoliants and anti-microbials. The 3 main factors that contribute to acne are.. Impaired dead skin cell shedding that leads to blocked pores Increased oil production further clogging pores, due to hormones/genetics/over use of astringents P.acne bacteria which infects the clogged pore and causes the breakout. How can active skin care & treatments prevent this? Actives such as chemical exfoliants can break the proteins that hold our dead skin cells together, meaning the dead cells are free to fall away easily. Using a chemical exfoliant such as AHAs like Gylcolic Acid, can help normalise the skins own shedding process & rid of dead cells. Salicylic Acid which is a BHA, also has a powerful exfoliating action, whilst helping to normalise oil production.
