The filter is to stop dust and lint from gathering on the coil (heat exchanger). It will pass through the filter as it blocks up so when it does make it onto the coil it reduces airflow and reduces efficiency increases your running costs You dont want that do you?. Its easy remove the filter DONT brush it or vacuum it place it on a path gently hose both sides and stand it up to dry and put it back, if you have disposable filters check them regularly and replace when necessary.
