25.01.2022 Last week we welcomed a new member to the Allevia team - Mr. Dane Chan. Dane joins us as our third Support Coordinator. He is a Social Worker (Master of Social Work) with experience in the health and community services sector and is very excited about ensuring that people with a disability will benefit from his support to connect with the services and support they want and need. Please join us in giving him a warm welcome to the Allevia community.

Maybe Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton agrees as he wants to see more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the federal parliament. 14.01.2022 Disability Royal Commission Update & Now Accepting Submissions The Disability Royal Commission recently held workshops in Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne with legal practitioners and advocates with experience in disability law and related areas. Commissioner Alastair McEwin AM and Special Senior Counsel Assisting, Chris Ronalds AO SC, facilitated the three workshops bringing together over 40 professionals who shared their views on significant legal issues and barriers for peop...le with disability. The four key areas of focus addressed by the workshop were: homes and living, education and learning, economic participation and justice. Participants were also asked to share strategies and case studies that have been successfully employed to prevent and address violence, abuse, neglect and exploitation of people with disability. A copy of the Chair's introductory remarks and observations from the three workshops are now available. In June 2019, Commissioners of the Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability welcomed disability advocates from across Australia to the Commission's first workshop in Melbourne. As part of his opening remarks, the Chair of the Commission confirmed for all participants that: This workshop is the first of many to be held throughout Australia. Workshops and public forums will be held in regional centres and remote locations. The Commission will soon be inviting submissions. Public hearings will be held in each State and Territory. 12.01.2022 Ben completed the Walk in the Park fundraiser for Parkinsons NSW. He got around the 4k course in record time, pushed in his wheelchair by his youngest brother Joe. 11.01.2022 Impact is not always about how we at Allevia affect the lives of the people we serve. It is sometimes about how we are impacted by those same people. At Allevia we appreciate that we our on a journey with people and they are on a journey with us - its a two way street!! A friend gave us a poem today - well, really it is a request and it goes like this: REQUEST... I don’t like it when you tell me what to do! How would you like it if I did that to you? It’s unfair not having control of my life I don’t care if looks like I’m struggling or in strife. I don’t want to go to any appointments! All they seem to give me are disappointments. I don’t want to eat that stuff! I’ve said no and that’s just tuff! I am truly wishing for that day Where you can truly understand when I say That I care for people and that’s just me And that it hurts when problems or issues are all you see. Please don’t underestimate my glory For I’ve lived through many things in my story. Unlike a seeker lost in the night abound I am smart and know my way around. I may not be your regular everyday ma’am But please take me for who I am.
