18.01.2022 Part 1: Dear Bully - Jennifer Colverson There has been a growing awareness over the last two decades, both within Australia and in other parts of the world, of the harmful impact of school bullying. Bullying in schools is now correctly recognised as a societal problem and anti-bullying initiatives are seen as part of the Human Rights movement. Bullying can be defined as a misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that causes ph...ysical and/or psychological harm. Dear Bully searches for the deeper reality of this simple definition by exploring the impacts of bullying on students ranging from five years to eighteen years. In direct collaboration with the photographer, victims of bullying provide their own words on the subject to add context and meaning to their portraits #activism #saynotobullying #goldcoast #dearbully #argus_qca

10.01.2022 My name is Jennifer Colverson and my role on the ARGUS team is Book Editor. This role gives me the opportunity of working with a dynamic team of students to produce a retrospective publication that celebrates the Cambodia In-field Study Tours that have been offered to QCA students since 2010. As my picture gives away, I am a mature aged student, currently undertaking a Bachelor of Digital Media majoring in Graphic Design. I have selected all of my electives from the photo m...edia stream because of my passion for photography which dates back more than four decades. Ever since I received a Polaroid One Step for my tenth birthday, I have been fascinated by the way photography allows you to capture a moment in time and make it last. My introduction to formal photography training at QCA has inspired me create photographic moments that deliver social commentary on important issues. See more

09.01.2022 Part 2: Dear Bully - Jennifer Colverson Approximately one in four Australian students (Years 4 to 9) report being bullied every few weeks or more often. Whilst this statistical data presents a stark reality in numerical terms, the significance in human terms is missing. Dear Bully aims to capture the personal truth that stems from the numbers by allowing victims of bullying to tell their own stories answering two simple questions; What is a bully? and What would you like to say to a bully? Handwritten responses are overlayed in digital composites to present words and pictures in a deeply personal amalgamation. #activism #saynotobullying #goldcoast #dearbully #argus_qca

02.01.2022 Part 2: Caillin Palmero - What is the Gold Coast? Leading up to the Commonwealth Games in 2018 the Australian tourism council worked hard to portray the Gold Coast as a destination famous for its beautiful beaches and vibrant cultural lifestyle, it was depicted as a hub of activity and exciting entertainment. Yet, others believe that a lot of the citys history was hidden by tourism officials to better exemplify this ideal image, which ultimately left many people questioning ...what the Gold Coasts image really was. Was it a vibrant dining and lifestyle culture like Tourism Australia had hoped? Or was the citys glitter strip history still a fundamental aspect of the Gold Coast? What is GC2018 explores the heated debate over the Gold Coasts image and highlights overarching issues like self-image and appearances at a city-wide level. Keep an eye out for issue 3's release date! #photojournslism #GC2018 #identity

02.01.2022 Part 2: Shi Yan - Chinese Life on the Gold Coast. With the rise of globalisation and technology advancements it's easier than ever for people from all over the world to communicate and travel freely. However, integrating into an international society doesn't come without it's challenges. Yan's project also explores the challenges faced by international minorities living on the Gold Coast and the ways in which they overcome these obstacles with the help of an inclusive society. The Argus Issue 3 - Frames of the Gold Coast, coming soon! #photojournalism #chineseculture #theargus_qca

01.01.2022 Part 1: Amanda Ragg - Changing Frames. According to the NSW mental health commission, one in four Australians aged between 16 to 24 are living with a mental disorder, and one in three experience moderate to high levels of psychological distress. Depression and anxiety disorders are the most common conditions, with prevalence highest among 18 to 24 year olds. Transitioning from adolescence to independant adult life is a time of enormous personal adjustment, and the most common time for the onset of mental illness is in the early 20s. Youth mental health issues are an increasingly important and common issue in modern society, and whether we like it or not, mental illness is ever present in youth culture on the Gold Coast. Stay tuned for part two.... #mentalhealth #youthculture #photojournalism #theargus_qca
