25.01.2022 This carved piece was originally in the box of parts that arrived for the restoration. Look back on our most recent posts to see how this stunner has been transformed.

23.01.2022 BEFORE and AFTER For a small business, positive word of mouth is the best! There’s nothing better than hearing from a new client that they had been referred by a previous client. In fact, that’s how this dresser found its way to us. We’re happy it did as we have loved the end result. Like what you see? Drop a in the comments

23.01.2022 Want to know what’s better than a cold ice cream on a hot summers day? Genuine feedback from our customers - it genuinely makes our day! Thanks!

23.01.2022 Of the pull drawer handles - on arrival at the workshop, a couple were missing, having been lost/ broken over time (Incredibly common for older pieces). One of these handles is not like the other.

23.01.2022 [Continuing from previous post] Dresser - Before Pic This is important. I want you to look at this picture and commit it to memory, because it’s going to look nothing like this when you see the after picture!... #brisbanefurnituredoctor #baysiderestorations

22.01.2022 Have you met our Ms Frankie yet? a VW van, she’s a perfect fit for The Art of Hammer and Nails! The original owner named the van ‘Frank’ - and just like our restorations, we love to keep the history. Have you ever had a name for your vehicle? If you have, how did you pick it? #retrocharm #vwt4

22.01.2022 I have a piece to show you this week that, to me, definitely feels like it has a heartbeat Stay tuned ....

22.01.2022 Granted the pic is at an odd angle but any guesses on what the next restoration is?

20.01.2022 Boxed arrivals

20.01.2022 In 130 years, this set of drawers has stood watch with the family during all of the good days and also the bad ones. It has listened to conversations of impending wars whispered in the quiet of the night, stood tall with news of babies coming with family whoops of joy and watched countless hair slicks being tamed for first days of school. Holding flowers, it would bear witness to the joy of new brides with hopes of happy years ahead. Standing somber, holding tissues and h...earing tears at family funeral gatherings. More than once it would have had newspaper maps spread out as family worried to figure out exactly where their young men in the town in uniform were likely to be sent. It has heard recitals of ‘the Man from Snowy River’ as a new tale to be shared and heard speculation about a draft constitution and Australia’s first PM. From the days where it was hitched to a cart to travel with a young Irish woman from Manila outside Tamworth to Casino and then onto Qld, it has been steadily accumulating family memories. It was a different era then and things were built to last - did she know that it would one day reside in the home of her great granddaughter? Memories of young men using the smooth surface to roll out endless numbers of tobacco. Of hiding lit ashtrays in the top drawers and scorching the interior. Young ones not tall enough to reach the tip drawers scrabbling in the lower drawers searching for a favourite crayon or drawing. Being set out in the garden to dry after floods. It has been polished, wiped down, dusted and painted, nearly set on fire and flooded. Frankly, she was a little bit tired. It has been an honour to work on the sympathetic restoration of this grand lady when family contacted us for rejuvenation of such a stalwart piece of their family history. And now, I’m happy to share with you, this grand lady that truly fits our motto of ‘restorations for the generations’. Go well, stand tall, maintain your watch. It has been my pleasure to know you.

18.01.2022 Made me chuckle...

17.01.2022 Congratulations Jennifer Lee Stefani, you are the winner of this years Best Dad Joke! Your certificate is in comments, a PM is on its way to you with your winning $50 BunningsGift Voucher. Thanks to all who entered! it wasn’t an easy choice

17.01.2022 Can you tell I just couldn’t get enough of these chairs?

16.01.2022 Love the ever-so-subtle invitation to lean back into this seat and get comfortable. That slight angle tilt on the seat makes a world of difference!

15.01.2022 [Continuing from previous post ] A young couple taking a big chance on life, leaving family and friends and heading for a better life immigrate to Queensland. A hard decision to make for any generation. Farewells done, excitement builds, they arrive, settle and await the container shipment arrival of their most favoured pieces to arrive from home. Humidity changes can have a huge impact on timber during months of sea and land travel. You can imagine the disappointment whe...n your favourite pieces arrive with damage. Timber has dried and cracked, there may have been knocks in the travel and, well, this is the result. Which is where I enter the picture....

14.01.2022 Timber Curves! Ok this will be the last I post on these chairs but let me share this message - to anyone that has ever said a timber chair is too uncomfortable - I hope these recent pics can show the opposite. A well made chair will frame the body, it will provide points of contact for all of the limbs to check against. And it WEARS. It wears well. For very minimal upkeep maintenance a well made pair of chairs will last decades at least. And maybe, one day, reappear in your grandchild’s home on the other side of the globe

14.01.2022 It’s National Dog Day 2020! Show me the dogs that light up your day @ Brisbane, Queensland, Australia

14.01.2022 Well Charlie & Dollie B, I’m so pleased that your great-grandchild decided to bring this family heirloom with her when emigrating to Australia. It’s a pleasure to work on it and see what it would of been like when first presented to you as a young couple, all those many years ago. Tip to all custom furniture makers: leave a handwritten note somewhere to be found decades later. It always gives a thrill when uncovered!

14.01.2022 Our client was so happy to see this piece completed. She had held onto it for years, in a downstairs garage and now is finally able to utilise it properly as intended. Indeed, it is a restoration for generations

13.01.2022 One handed What I have learnt in the past number of weeks.... I can not iron a shirt one handed ... I can not drive a manual vehicle one handed I can, however, sand timber I can apply a timber stain I can apply wax and polish (but jeez, it takes forever!) I’ve never been so thankful of workshop clamp and trolley dollies! Peeling fruit is next to impossible Buttering toast, don’t get me started, haha! But I’m well on the mend thanks to the team at @baysidehandtherapy Rod has been extracted and physio has commenced. Which is good news for the workshop, I have a couple of client pieces that just require finishing off before delivery and I’m keen to show them. PS: I can’t recall another time in my working life that my hand has been so pale!

13.01.2022 Don’t forget to SAVE (or share) this post! I pop it up annually as a reminder, it’s a handy reference

11.01.2022 Long time followers will know this in a beat I’m sure. What about you? Pop your answer in the comments.

10.01.2022 I was always told never to wish your days away ... but I’m sure I’m not the only one that’s looking forward to closing the chapter on 2020. Not that it’s all been bad - I’ve had a great time loving what I do and I’ve met some fabulous people, I’ve seen and worked on some amazing pieces and most of all, I’ve experienced some great support with my recent near miss. Thankfully the close of 2020 sees all 10 digits intact and I had a bit of a Santa moment today with doing a de...livery on Christmas Eve. So, thanks for watching - hope to see you back again next year - in the meantime, stay safe and never pass up the chance to pat a dog. Merry Christmas

10.01.2022 As you go into the weekend and possibly seeking some antique/vintage finds ... keep this thought in mind. For those North of Brisbane, the #collectoramafair is on at Nambour, Saturday 7th at the Showgrounds. A giant vintage and antiques fair. Go with a sharp eye, you’ll be sure to find something you like. A day out on the Sunshine Coast sounds like a great idea!

09.01.2022 Looks like someone is keen to get back into the delivery van! How cool are these pup overalls? Sent through by a longtime supporter and put together by making_mummy in Melbourne (link below) Thank you so much Nadi! We think she looks great in her new overalls we just had to get a shot of her posing by the Christmas tree ... https://instagram.com/making_mumma?igshid=1sfbclxuox6on

Here’s how it goes - A dad joke is, by nature, a simple pun. It must be clean enough to tell to either an 8 or an 88 year old. It needs to be short and snappy. Let us know your best dad joke and if it’s the winning entry, you will be bestowed the title of ‘TAOHAN Punmeister 2020’ AND receive a Bunning’s gift voucher to the value of $50.00. You don’t need to be a dad to enter! You just need to have that winning dad joke! To enter: 1. Like this page so you see us in your newsfeed 2. Have a pal who fancies themselves as the funny one? Challenge them to a pun-duel. (We love a good pun-battle!) Entries close Thursday, September 4 with winner announced Friday, September 5. We could all use a laugh at this stage of the year, join in and maybe win yourself a free trip to Bunning’s

07.01.2022 Who looks at furniture feet? I mean, they’re there and they serve a function, but who really looks at them? Here’s a tidbit that might get you looking.... The popular ‘Ball & Claw’ foot design originated in the Orient and typically would show a dragon claw clenching/guarding a ball. The notion being that the claw would represent the Emporer and the ball would represent knowledge or power. In the early 1700s, with the newly opened maritime trading routes, oriental feature...s started becoming popular in European homes. However, some countries adopted their own take on the Ball & Claw foot with England replacing the dragon claw with a lion’s claw to represent the English monarchy. When the design arrived in America, their preference was to use eagle talons rather than a dragon claw. I think the descriptive’Ball & Claw’ works perfectly, don’t you?

07.01.2022 Needing an alarm for the kids during school holidays? Turn up the volume

06.01.2022 The journey so far..... Thanks all for the messages of support and commiserations, it’s really been a positive help through a tricky time. The good news is that the reattachment of the previously detached thumb appears to have gone well. The post surgery check has been done with the surgeon and he reports that’s he is happy with progress so far. Regular dressing changes are happening - they’re not fun, but a necessity. ... The upside is that I’ve now got this groovy Darth Vader looking splint cover keeping everything under wraps and safe. To show where I came from to get to the Darth Vader glove, have a look at the pic in comments (no gore-pics, I promise). Huge thanks to the teams @baysidehandtherapy, @princessalexandrahospital and @greenslopesprivatehospital

05.01.2022 2020 Top 9 according to Instagram. Interesting ... apparently you all like dogs as much as I do I look forward to bringing you more of our furniture restoration pics in 2021. Until then, stay safe and never pass up a chance to pat a dog.

04.01.2022 Work in progress. Seeing the bed head and footer side by side shows how shellac ages over the years. #workinprogress #behindthescenes #furniturerestoration

04.01.2022 A CHALLENGE! Imagine it’s the 1950s. It’s post war Netherlands and you, as a young man, are going to board a ship to emigrate to a different country, one on the other side of the world, a country you have never visited and where the seasons are upside down, there are animals you’ve never seen and a new language to learn. Remember, it’s the 1950s....... Sit and look around your home. What will you take? It can’t be too heavy or too bulky, space is at a premium. Books o...f course, but they will take too much weight, so they must be limited. Photos, of course, that’s a given. Probably best to remove the frames and travel lighter. A piece of furniture that you will miss. What will it be? It should be functional not just decorative. Something sustainable - it must be repairable if damaged in transit. Something that will carry memories of happy days from home. Something that will give you peace when you run your hands over it. What did you pick? Let me know.

04.01.2022 Behind the scenes: Icky to watch or satisfying? For me I love that little sound at the end

04.01.2022 Handmade generations ago for a young couple. Kept in the family through generations. Now in a different country and good to go for coming generations. Ah, the stories this piece could tell

02.01.2022 So, it’s been interesting times here recently... A workplace injury saw me being whisked pronto to hospital courtesy of the fantastic Qld Ambulance Service. What happened? Well, without being too graphic, I went from having 10 digits to having 9! ... Not how I expected to see out 2020, but hey, it’s 2020 and it’s just how this year rolls, am I right? The bright sparks at the hospital, they thought to try and reattach it. If it was timber, I could have given advice but I figured I’d just be quiet and best let them do their thing. Glad I did because I’ve now got 10 pointers again (although one of them is held in place with wire for the time being) The pics are a bit gory, I’m sure no one needs to see that. Sooooo.....the better half and I were previously contemplating closing the workshop in December for family/Xmas/etc - the hand of fate has decreed that plan to be brought forward a few weeks. Our books are open for bookings from January and I will still be offering our obligation-free quoting service in the interim. Meanwhile, I need to come up with some worthy fishing tale to account for the scars for when it heals..... Open to suggestions -
