04.01.2022 Choosing your child’s Godparent - Nono (), Nona () Greek Orthodox . Part 1 . . .... It is an honor to be chosen as a godparent. Not only are you responsible for the child’s spiritual health, but also you become an important member of the family. Therefore, you must choose the person worthy of this role. Your role as a godparent is not over after the ceremony but continues throughout their lives. Traditionally, it was the godparent that chose the child’s name that would go on the baptism certificate (though the two names would be often the same but in some cases the two names would be different). The godparent is responsible for the purchase of the following items for the ceremony.... Cross (in either yellow or white gold) Outfit Christening box which will have all the content you need eg towels, receiving sheet & hat, oil, soap, etc Candle (1 only) Bombonierie The child is held by the godparent from the start of the ceremony. The priest will ask them to read a passage from the Bible at the beginning which they can read either in Greek or English. Half way through the ceremony the child will be given to whom ever is changing them. Traditional it would be the grandmothers but the parents can choose who will be part of the ceremony. The child is then given to the priest naked and the godparent will oil the child from head to toe. Once this is done the sacristan (who is the helper of the priest) will drape over the godparent’s arms the large towel and receiving sheet because once the priest baptises the child in the water the child will then be placed in the arms of the godparent. The whole time chanting is being hummed by the chanter. The priest will continue by cutting 4 small locks of the child’s hair (their first hair cut since birth) in the sign of the cross and then oil the child’s forehead, palms of their hands and feet. Place singlet and cross over their heads.
