23.01.2022 Last night in Athens (30 Sept), a new lighting of the great Parthenon that sits on the Acropolis hill went live .... bringing a new life to the greatest symbol of democracy in the world. Even as the world faces many challenges ... Greece is still the beacon of liberty, freedom and human endurance. Greece is the cornerstone of western civilisation. Greece is the foundation of knowledge and thought. A brave nation with courageous people who live far and wide across the globe, retaining their identity, their wisdom, and their love of life. We are blessed to have such an amazing heritage, and this together with our faith is unstoppable. #acropolis #athenianassociation #greece #democracy #lovegreece

08.01.2022 Looking back at the last 2 years .... the Athenian Association bringing great events to our community.

06.01.2022 Thermopylae-Salamis 2020 AHEPA NSW INC, in cooperation with the Athenian Association of NSW and the Pan-Lakonian Federation, is preparing a series of events in ...honour of the anniversary of 2,500 years of the Battles of Thermopylae and Salamis. The official announcement of the cooperative effort took place at the Athenian Associations Christmas Luncheon on Sunday 1 December 2019. According to President Mr Skandalakis, AHEPA NSW through its Cultural Centre Kostis Palamas and in cooperation with Australian Hellenic community organisations, is preparing a series of events in 2020, honouring the anniversary of the Battles of Thermopylae and Salamis during the Persian Wars. In early 2020, the full program of events will be presented, including lectures, exhibitions, concerts and more. The next few years 2020-2024 will mark major historic milestones for Australian Hellenism: - 2020 is 2,500 years since the Battles of Thermopylae and Salamis, as well as - 80 years since the famous of 1940; - 2021 is the Bicentenary of the Hellenic War of Independence; - 2022 is the Centenary of the holocaust of Smyrne; - 2023 is the Centenary of the Treaty of Lausanne and the so-called Exchange of Populations; - 2024 is the Centenary of the founding of our Archdiocese. In cooperation with Australian Hellenic community organisations and with the Australian and Hellenic authorities, AHEPA New South Wales is working on preparations for a series of commemorative events. Historic anniversaries are opportunities to remember our ancestors, to promote Hellenism and our rights within Australian society and also to define Hellenic identity in the Antipodes personally and collectively. To inform everyone in Australia, in Hellas and Cyprus, internationally who Hellenes are. The Battle of Thermopylae was fought on 20 August 480BCE, during the Second Persian War, simultaneously with the naval Battle of Artemisium. The last Hellenes to fall at Thermopylae were King Leonidas of Sparta and his bodyguard of 300 hoplite warriors. The Battle of Salamis was fought between the coalition of Hellenic poleis and the fleet of the Persian Empire on 22 September in the Straits of Salamis near Athens. The naval Battle of Salamis constituted one of the most significant clashes, and the beginning of the end of the Persian invasion. Centuries later, Hellenes again fought and nail to repel a hostile invasion; this time the forces of fascism and Nazism. Thermopylae and its environs, Salamis and the waters around it, again received the blood and bones of the wounded and fallen, heroes and enemies alike. With our sights set on the future, AHEPA NSW INC learns from the past. Dr Panayiotis Diamadis Secretary AHEPA NSW INC
