25.01.2022 An oldie but still a goldy! A throwback cut from a few years ago when some of our team sat down to help debunk some myths about surf specific training, specifically the use of unstable surface/balance training. Unpopular opinion: Competitive/professional level surfing athletes do not need balance training.... (They probably wouldnt be professional if they did....) While unstable surface training has its place (especially in rehabilitation), we all should know by now its s...econd rate for improving athletic qualities like lower body strength and power (in fact, the research tells us training on an unstable surface actually REDUCES lower body strength and power). What does the current research tell us they need to compete at an Elite level? - High levels of Aerobic Fitness (to meet the demands of a heat, or multiple heats). - Upper body maximal strength and endurance (for improving paddling performance, pop-up and wave positioning). - Lower body & Trunk strength and power (for high force output during maneuvers, generating speed, rapid and powerful turning/cutting during quick bottom and top turns). Despite the unique skill and style of the sport, there may be more similarities in athletic qualities then there are differences between surfing athletes and other athletes involved in fast paced, explosive sports. Their land based training should reflect the need for this..... If you train slow, you will be slow See more

24.01.2022 Some collective works on Lower backs in pain & that do not bend..... All these pictures are during either exercises or assessments of attempted lumbar flexion (curve)... something missing? The flexion curve? Theres much talk around the concepts of neutral spine vs flexed spines in training nowadays, like with any and all other joints and/or tissues in the human body, if we live or train everything in one way only, Eg. neutral spine and nothing in flexion, we will lose the ability to flex or move ours spines....

24.01.2022 Online and Telehealth transition. 23.01.2022 #Repost @deweynielsen with @get_repost If you have a goal of endurance and increasing aerobic capacity, this is likely the single best advice you can take. Overdose on zone 2 conditioning. If you are similar to what the picture demonstrates, you will have to overdose and be very patient & consistent for several years. The Overdose amount depends on your goal but your sessions should be 40-90 minutes (longer for heftier goals). If you already spend 80-90% of your cond...itioning time in zone 1 & 2, disregard this advice as you likely already know what youre doing. But if you are like 99% of endurance hobbyists, you have been burying yourself with high intensity training (commonly with hobbyists, they do the opposite of pros & spend 80-90% of their conditioning time in Z3,4,5) basically adapting your body to be as inefficient as possible and become what I call a sugar burner. You have trained your body to not utilize fat as a fuel source (the most plentiful and efficient source) and now even with low intensity work, you go directly to a glycolytic state (sugar burner). Phil Mafetone callled this the Aerobic Deficient Syndrome. The Uphill Athlete crew has done a swell job at highlighting this in recent years. The picture is a demonstration of this. The athlete attempts to do a SLOW run and immediately the HR skips right past lower efficient zones and spikes into zone 4 & 5 becoming glycolytic and anaerobic at nearly an instant. While the professional endurance world has an excellent grip on physiology, the fitness industry continues to camp under a rock with noise canceling headphones on still spouting tabatas! for the goal of endurance. Thats a whole lotta people skipping the first chapters of their physiology books. So what should you read and where should you start? The first chapters of your physiology book. In anything, never skip past the fundamentals because without them you will never grasp the more advanced thus being an eternal white belt in a topic. Dont mistake this post as an anti-high intensity post. Its not. Thats important too! But no one will ever build a house on top of a foundation of rice cakes!! See more

07.01.2022 Following on from our post about the importance of Aerobic Base training (sorry a little late!) a few days ago. A quick google search will show you clearly what the Heart Rate Zones are relative to each person, but why was Zone 2 so important in our last post? This is our Aerobic Base Zone. No matter what your sport or its intensity, any athlete (or human) on this planet should build their performance on top of a solid Aerobic Fitness Base. High Intensity Training (HIT)... and Low Intensity Training (Aerobic Training) will elicit very different physiological adaptations. A greater aerobic base, built by training in aerobic zones gives us all the adaptations we need for both endurance and also RECOVERY! (Mitochondrial density, capillary density, ^ aerobic enzyme activity etc). Plus, the ability to utilize fat as a preferred fuel source far more efficiently! As effective as HIT may be for certain adaptations, too much time spent in higher training zones (while neglecting our lower intensity zones) starts to see a shift in preferred energy metabolism straight to Carbohydrates/sugars even with lower intensity activities, essentially skipping the fat burning zone. This is something you can easily measure with a heart rate monitor, does your heart rate go from resting to zone 3 or above with minimal effort? If you are an endurance athlete, this is very important, if you are any athlete in any sport your ability to recover faster between sets or events is also important, if youre a general punter and cannot lose weight (fat) and you train HIT 5 days per week and dont know why you cant lose fat, this may be worth considering! 07.01.2022 @theathletesworkshop team would like to say thanks and also well done to all our Tuesday afternoon Tweed Netball and Multi-Sport Athletic Development girls as some of them finish up their current training program. 04.01.2022 #Repost @rorydavies.aep with @get_repost I had a patient recently who was told by another practitioner to never do ANY form of weight training as they didn’t have ideal alignment. Structural abnormalities and asymmetries can be and are perfectly normal (whatever that means). Humans are incredibly adaptable beings and given gradual exposure to many stimuli, we can achieve a lot more then we give credit. Focusing sometimes on what your patients CAN do, rather then what... they can’t do may give us a better outcome.... Some images to get us thinking See more

02.01.2022 Ready to take your performance to the next level?

02.01.2022 Hard work beats talent when talent doesnt work hard. Although training for mobility does not require the upmost talent it does require extremely hard work! Thats if you actually want to make physiological changes.... Competitive golfer, with maybe 5-10 degrees of FRONT (left) hip internal rotation about 3-4 months ago (if you are familiar with the research around lack of front hip internal rotation and its relationship to back pain, this is crucial for golfers). Same golfer, same hip now with around 25-30 degrees internal rotation. Yes there is a slight lateral deviation in the femur but none the less, significant improvements. No magic, just hard work using @functionalrangeconditioning principles and applied PAILS/RAILS day in and day out. Plenty more work to go!

02.01.2022 We get hung up on modalities instead of referring back to principles. Got to love load!! Awesome work @adammeakins @adammeakins THE LAWS . Sometimes the fundamentals of what we do get forgotten or overlooked in this profession.... . So heres a quick reminder of the laws of bone and tissue adaption. . These simple laws should guide and govern all that we do as MSK therapists. . Some try to bastardise these laws to justify what they do, but no matter how they twist or contort it rubbing, poking, or stabbing people with dry needles will not adapt bones or soft tissues. . Its the forces of movement and exercise that do if they are dosed suitably and adequately. . #pain #sport #physio #physiotherapist #physiotherapy #physicaltherapy #sportsphysio #thesportsphysio #sportsphysiotherapy #trainer #personaltrainer #coach #strengthcoach #osteo #osteopath #osteopathy #chiro #chiropractic #chiropractor #sportstherapy #rehab #rehabtherapy #myotherapy #kinesiotherapy #exercisephysiology #exercisephysiologist #dptstudent #shouldercomplex #cantgowronggettingstrong @ The Athletes Workshop See more
