18.01.2022 Diego Armando Maradona has died at the age of 60. Arguably the greatest footballer of all time, he suffered a cardiac arrest at his home on Wednesday. In a career that spanned 21 years, this small, feisty man, with a left foot that defied belief, stood head and shoulders above his peers. Raised in the impoverished Villa Fiorito district of Buenos Aires, he began at Argentinos Juniors, where he made his debut 10 days before his 16th birthday. Less than five months later, he pl...ayed his first game for Argentina. His transfer from Boca Juniors to Barcelona in 1982 didn’t work out, ending in a mass brawl in the 1984 Copa del Rey final. But a move that summer to Napoli created a legend, with Maradona bringing the Italian club its first (and last) two Serie titles. He also dragged his country to World Cup glory in 1986 with a blend of jaw-dropping brilliance, gutsy resilience and a little ‘helping hand’ from God. To the fans of both Napoli and Argentina, though, he was God. His life away from football was chaotic, perhaps as a reaction to that adoration and expectation. He was unfaithful to his wife. He was addicted to alcohol and cocaine. He fraternized with the Neapolitan mob. He owed millions in taxes, but also became politically active, swinging left from neoliberal beginnings and hanging out with left-wing Latin American leaders like Fidel Castro and Hugo Chavez. He even led the march against George W Bush when the US president visited Argentina in 2005, calling Bush 'human garbage.' His career drifted. He was a fat, gifted mess for the 1992-93 season at Sevilla before playing his last during a short homecoming at Boca Juniors. An international comeback at the 1994 World Cup ended with a 15-month drugs ban. He tried management, too, including two years in charge of Argentina, but his playing genius didn’t translate into coaching. He became a sad sight in his later years: fluctuating in size, in and out of rehab and hospital. But always Maradona, with that fire in his oversized belly and a hint of devilry in his eyes. And he was is still adored, worshipped, by anyone who saw him play. They know that there will never be another Maradona. #Maradona #RIPDiego
