07.01.2022 The recent move by the producers of the half time entertainment producers of the AFL Grand final in Queensland to have non-professional, amateur dancers perform... without pay is unconscionable. Not only does it rob professional dancers of a viable work opportunity, it actively sends a message that a dancer has less worth than the person selling a barely warmed meat pie. The AFL wants to present a visual spectacle of dance but they are not prepared to pay for it. I’m not alone in being furious about the loss of employment opportunities for dancers in this country, as well as the ongoing amateur-fication of professional dancers and entertainers. The AFL may claim they are procuring non-paid dancers as part of community engagement but it is nothing more than a move to cut costs. If the AFL were serious about community engagement, they need look no further than the incredible community of professional Queensland dancers whose industry has been decimated by Covid 19. As an arts worker myself, I’ve heard every argument under the sun as to why I should work without pay. The common one is that performers love what they do so they should be happy to do it for free. I imagine most (if not all) AFL players "love what they do" and are grateful for their job, but I don’t see them playing for free, or suggesting cutting costs by having the Mount Gravatt Vultures’ second eighteen take the field on grand final day. Another constant excuse for not paying artists is that it will provide exposure that will help them land the next gig. But if the next gig is not the AFL grand final half time entertainment, then what is it? Surely providing entertainment on a major nationally televised sporting event should be the pinnacle for a dancer, not a stepping stone to the next gig. Here’s a fact; the next gig is not coming. Not when an organisation like the AFL (who preach social equality at every turn) rob dancers of an opportunity to make a living by handing their work to unpaid amateurs in the midst of a global pandemic. Dancing is a job. Much like professional sportspeople, it is a profession that requires years of physical conditioning, costly training and a passionate and focused mindset. When dancers dance, especially en masse at a large scale event like the grand final, it looks great. It creates atmosphere and energy. It expresses joy and unity. It’s the physical language of celebration. If what I’ve just said makes you roll your eyes down the back of your head, let me ask you this: if dancing en masse didn’t represent all these things, why are we having this conversation? The answer is that the AFL know dance is great- that it looks great on screen, that it fills a stadium with positive energy, that it creates vibe. They simply just don’t want to pay for it. No other industry would tolerate their jobs being taken away and given to a voluntary labour force. Why should the entertainment industry? It is up to ALL of us in the entertainment industry to stand up and force the AFL (and every other major sporting code while we’re at it) to value our industry. If they’re unwilling to pay for the entertainment they seek then their half-time show should be a field of empty, vibe-less, un-danced grass. It’s at this point I’d usually feel compelled to say something conciliatory about those unpaid dancers who are performing voluntarily at this event. That’s it’s not their fault. That’s it not about them. But I don’t feel conciliatory. Sure, it’s not necessarily their fault, but it is about them. I believe the many dance schools who have leapt at the opportunity to have their student dancers appear without pay in an event like this are actively participating in the destruction of the very industry they are training their dancers for. Perhaps they are unaware that at present there are ZERO professional dancers being engaged at the grand final. Perhaps they see the grand final as an opportunity to showcase their school’s wares. Whatever the reason, and whether consciously or unconsciously, they are undercutting the dance industry and supporting the shrinking of employment opportunities for professionals. Put simply, unless the AFL are prepared to employ and pay a decent percentage of their massed dancers, any amateur dancers or dance schools who appear for no pay under the guise of community engagement are crossing a picket-line. In the name of preserving the dance industry, I ask all Queensland dance schools to stand in solidarity with professional dancers and refuse to participate unless the AFL provides paying dance jobs. You have more power than you think. Every year the AFL grand final celebrates the rightful place that Aussie rules football has as a focus-point for Australians and their communities. The AFL itself positions itself as a force for social good, the lens through which we interact with and see each other. The AFL is rightfully aware of communicating the kind of shared values of equality, respect and participation that our society should uphold. Football brings us together, and as we come together there is opportunity for all. There is also employment for many. Whether it’s the person mowing the field, pouring the beers, scrubbing the canapes off the corporate boxes, aiming the cameras, selling the tickets, providing the energy to power the lights, rubbing down someone’s weary glutes or actually playing the game; everyone is being paid. Excluding dancers from earning a living wage and replacing them with unpaid amateurs is disrespectful, greedy and exploitative. It has to stop. See more
