24.01.2022 JUST A TAXI DRIVER African taxi drivers want to create a better working life. This short film is their story told through the ... Theatre of Transformation, directed by Bryan Derrick. African community members are the main actors. The project came about through the ideas of Somali Community leaders and Jesuit Social Services workers in Flemington. This theatre demonstrates the process whereby taxi drivers and the community can change attitudes and expectations and how the pressures of work can be reduced through active participation and experimentation in the Theatre. We hope that you will get a real insight into the life of a taxi driver, the everyday challenges of their work and the extraordinary opportunities for change that are discovered.

08.01.2022 In this scene from "Just a Taxi Driver" the mother will not allow her daughter to get into the taxi because of the driver, and insists they wait for a "better" one. When the audience of taxi drivers viewed this scene, a lively discussion ensued wherein suggestions were made to empower the driver by getting out of the taxi and introducing himself to the women and engage in discussion with them. It just may have given him a fare and, at the same time, overcome some of the passe...ngers fears and bias. Audience members took his place in the scene and ran it through again using their insights to regain the drivers power and equal status. A very powerful scene, wherein the audience provided possible resolutions for the driver. This process is at the core of Theatre of the Oppressed performances and interractions. See more
