23.01.2022 GED KEARNEY TO BE HONOURED AT 2018 BRIGID AWARDS Newly elected MP and hero of the Batman by-election Ged Kearney, will receive the Brigid Whelan Award at this y...ear’s Brigid Awards in Sydney. The Brigid Awards, run by the Irish Friends of Labor, honours Irish and Irish Australian women for their contribution to society and to the cause of labour. The winners of the 2018 Brigid Awards, to be held on Friday 20 April in Sydney, have been confirmed. They are: The Bridget Whelan Award: Ged Kearney for her outstanding contribution to the union movement, her work as President of the ACTU, a lifetime dedicated to equality and helping other people, and her recent success in winning the Batman by-election. The Community Hero Award (2 Recipients) Sr. Mary Leahy RSJ and Tina King Garde Contribution to Small Business - Georgina Finn Contribution to the Union Movement Niamh Fitzsimmons The Brigid Awards are being held for the third year in a row and will honour 5 outstanding Irish-Australian women who have made significant contributions to Australian society. Award winners will be honoured at a Gala banquet to be held at Harbour220, Macquarie Street, on Friday 20th April. Senator Deborah O’Neill who is hosting the awards is pleased to be able to recognise the achievement of these women. The Brigid Awards are very close to my heart. They are an important way of recognising the work and commitment that Irish and Irish Australian women do in so many parts of our community. These recipients were carefully selected and represent a wonderful Irish tradition of service to the community, voluntarism, community and equality. I am thrilled that the wonderful Ged Kearney will be the first recipient of the Brigid Whelan Award. Ged has spent a lifetime serving and fighting for the interests of working people. She started that work as a nurse, then as a unionist, President of the ACTU and now as the federal member for Batman. Ged’s courageous spirit on issues like WorkChoices, refugees, our health services and so much more made her an excellent choice for MP and a stand-out nominee to be honoured at this year’s Brigid Awards. Previous recipients of the awards include Brigid Whelan, Janice Currie-Henderson, Deirdre Grusovin, Coral Levett and Dr Marie Leech Tickets can be Purchased by downloading this Ticket Form - https://gallery.mailchimp.com//Reservation_Form_2018_Brigi
