22.01.2022 Serendipitous Moments! Those moments or experiences that take you by surprise and offer unexpected delight. They happen regularly if we are open to receive them, but - by their very nature - they happen when we least expect them! I had a serendipitous moment on one of recent morning walks with our dog, Obi. https://blog.theavenuecc.org.au//08/05/serendipitous-mome/

And wilderness moments those challenging, sometimes overwhelming, experiences of insecurity, anxiety, uncertainty, disruption are part and parcel of the journey we call life. So, do we simply endure them, or is it possible that we can learn to embrace them? 13.01.2022 Looking After Yourself (and others) in Lockdown 2 When the second period of COVID19 lockdown was announced last Tuesday, I experienced a deep sense of disappointment. I had dealt well with the first period of isolation, had actually enjoyed some aspects of it, but this felt different perhaps more serious, more inconvenient, even unfair and it evoked a sadness in me that took me by surprise. Even more surprising was the recognition over the ensuing couple of days that this sadness was having a physical outworking as I experienced an unusual lethargy and some frustration over niggling health issues. How did the announcement impact on you, I wonder? https://blog.theavenuecc.org.au//looking-after-yourself-a/
12.01.2022 On Gratitude. "We think people are grateful because they are happy. But look closely and you’ll find that people are happy because they are grateful." [David Steindl-Rast] Cultivating an attitude of gratitude really does make a difference to how you experience life, and to how others experience you! Here are some reflections on how to cultivate deep gratitude even in the face of life's challenges. https://blog.theavenuecc.org.au/2020/10/14/on-gratitude/

09.01.2022 David Steindl-Rast says ‘We think people are grateful because they are happy. 08.01.2022 Wounding Words and Healing Words. Yet again I find my thoughts stimulated by the writing of Diana Butler Bass. The title of this piece is hers, from a reflection she wrote last week in response to the first Presidential debate. Here’s an excerpt: ... words are a powerful weapon. They cut the heart. They silence opponents. They force others to submit. The biblical wisdom tradition insists that words can nurture or destroy: A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness i...Continue reading

05.01.2022 This has been a year like no other where Australians, particularly Melburnians, have experienced lockdown and many have been affected by isolation, loneliness a...nd often despair. In response, Doncaster Church of Christ and Opera Scholars Australia have joined forces to provide an event on Friday the 4th of December at 7-9pm that would see people’s spirits raised in anticipation of better days to come by experiencing the "joy" of Christmas and the "hope" that is found in Christ. This is a free virtual event where everyone is welcome. The hope is to be able to give back to the artists and production team who have had no paid work during this tumultuous year as well as bring Christmas into homes near and far. It would be much appreciated if you could contribute to the Go Fund Me page: www.gofundme.com/f/virtual-twilight-carols. The line up of artists is incredible: Guy Noble as compere, Teddy Tahu Rhodes, Silvie Paladino, the Melbourne Welsh Male Choir, Richard Thomas and an amazing band with top Melburnian artists to lead the community carol singing. Go to the website www.twilightcarols.com.au to register for the event.

02.01.2022 NAIDOC Week 2020 is about seeing, hearing and learning the First Nations’ 65,000+ year history of this country - which is Australian history. Did you know that... Australia has the world’s oldest oral stories? Or that the First Nations peoples engraved the world’s first maps? Are you aware that they built and engineered structures predating well-known sites such as the Egyptian Pyramids and Stonehenge? Or that the world’s largest gallery, containing almost 1 million engravings spread out over 300 square km, was produced by the First Australians between 25,000-45,000 years ago (AND it contains what may be the oldest image of a human face on record - see below)? This NAIDOC Week, let's remember to embrace - and celebrate - the incredible history, culture and achievements of First Nations peoples!
