09.01.2022 As a small business co-owner, I won all but one of every local, state and national awards program I entered. And I'll tell you how. Ten years ago, I was part of a small business that was losing money faster than it was making it. With no budget for marketing, I entered local business awards to gain us some free exposure. But that wasn’t all that happened.... I gained insight into my business that helped me identify where we were going wrong. I developed ideas about how to grow it on a minuscule budget. I set firm goals and committed to them, because I knew I would be accountable when the next submission rolled around. I broke industry stereotypes to build a business around the needs of my clients and fill a genuine service gap. I developed a reputation as an industry go-to person, securing free publicity locally, on A Current Affair and in the Sydney Morning Herald, as a WorkCover NSW Ambassador, and more. I increased staff numbers by 600%. And I increased profit by even more. How? Business Awards. See, when I started entering it was purely to secure free publicity to prop up a sinking ship. I wasn’t really sure of what I was doing and just followed my instincts - I answered from the heart and with honesty. But as I progressed, it hit me - I had to show growth, improvements, innovation, and even failures. And the only way to do that was by providing EVIDENCE. So I did. And I killed it to the point of embarrassment. I know from experience that the key to winning is NOT being the business with the biggest budget, team or premises. It’s about what you DO within your business, regardless of those things. And the only way to communicate that is with EVIDENCE. Prove yourself.
