19.01.2022 Vonda Last will also be singing a John Derek Baker song on March 5. She is a powerful classical, gospel, country and soul singer and has worked with Aborig...inal community choirs, Short Black Opera Company performing in Pecan Summer, Archie Roach and the Australian Dance Theatre to name a few. Her first single release For Love of Country is regularly sung throughout South Australian Primary Schools in recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Servicemen and Women. She and John connected strongly when they met and he became her friend and mentor - they went on to work on a recording project together but sadly was not able to finish. 16.01.2022 John Derek Baker I just found this video on YouTube (by his brother Darrin Baker I think ?). Its There is A Truth, performed at his last ever gig, when he was inducted into the SA Hall Of Fame. This was the most challenging guitar piece that he wrote (particularly when singing it at the same time)...and he totally nailed it on this night. I think it's my favourite song.
14.01.2022 The Yearlings (I call then The Darlings...because they just are!) will be singing and playing one of Johns songs too on March 5 (FringeTIX). Not only are they... close friends and musical comrades but Chris also recorded/engineered some of our albums. Their music is hypnotic, intimate, raw and soulful and you can see them play their own songs this Sat night (Feb 29) at McLaren Vale Institute Hall. See more
06.01.2022 Dear friends of The Baker Suite, John Derek Baker and Gayle Buckby. Our website has a new page - a tribute page to John Baker (see link below) who passed away late August. This page has eulogies and videos from Johns farewell, and stories from friends who couldn't attend. There's also a message board if you'd like to leave your own message. Together we will keep his memory and music alive. Lots of love, Gayle

01.01.2022 The Baker Suite are honoured to be celebrating John Baker's songs on Thursday March 5, at the Adelaide Fringe Festival. John's songs will be performed by singers who he had a special connection with from around Australia, backed by The Baker Suite and a string quartet. All in the glorious surrounds of the Woodville Town Hall Theatre. Doors open at 6pm, show 7-9pm. Link to tix below. 01.01.2022 Kevin Bennett - not only an acclaimed singer-songwriter and 6 x Golden Guitar winner but also a long-time friend of John Derek Baker. They went to school toget...her, learned guitar together and did every other thing you get up to as school-boys. KB will be coming over from Sydney to perform one of Johns songs at our Fringe Show on March 5 (FRINGETIX) In the early days, John, myself and a circle of aspiring ‘schoolkid musicheads’ had many 'memorable jams’ during which JB honed and demonstrated his inimitable technique until the rest of us became mere ‘singers who played the guitar'. Witnessing how music became seamlessly woven into John’s being was a wondrous thing to behold. Then, later marvelling at his growth and strength as a complete artist - an ‘all singing, writing and guitar playing musical virtuoso. The thing is, regardless of whether John ever picked up a guitar, or wrote and sang these timeless songs, he would forever remain one of the best humans I've known
