25.01.2022 PB!!! Congratulations to balanced runner @chris_jwhite on running down a 28 min PB off the bike and breaking 10 hours (9.55) at the Cairns Ironman today. Outstanding mate!! #whotaughtyoutorun #thebalancedrunner

22.01.2022 Absolute respect. I’m so many ways.

22.01.2022 PB!! @jase_stevo running to a huge PB at #goldcoastmarathon 2 weeks ago. Solid training from @run2pb and technique improvement with me and Jase cruised right on by his previous best. Well done mate!! #whotaughtyoutorun #thebalancedrunner

20.01.2022 PB!! @shaylee_johnston has been super consistent, and over time we’ve made big changes to her run. Last weekend Shaylee broke her 5km PB for a third time in 6 months, this time by 33seconds!! #whotaughtyoutorun #thebalancedrunner

20.01.2022 TESTIMONIAL - Online balanced runner Kim White I first heard about Paul MacKinnon through an interview he did on the Inside Running Podcast. I thought it would be a good idea to tweek my running style so I reached out for a consultation. My first coaching session was on March 5th, 2020 and I couldn’t believe the difference it made to my running. ... Before the session I would feel pain in my legs and muscles within 200m of starting my run (especially on hard surfaces) and would have to grind out the rest of the run until I finished or was exhausted and had to walk. I had put this pain down to my age (53) and the extra weight I had put on (23kg) since I stopped seriously competing 28 years ago. I had no idea it was all due to poor running form. I started to see a difference of ease in my running during the coaching session and when Paul asked me to run again like I did before, the pain immediately came back to my legs. The next day while implementing the new technique, I effortlessly ran 25 seconds per kilometer faster than I had done previously over 10km (over 4 minutes faster). During the next week I was also running up to 10km on road and concrete surfaces with no pain at all. This improvement has since stayed with me. I continued to use Paul’s technique until it became 2nd nature to me and still no pain in my legs. I have since had 2 more sessions with Paul to further improve my running form, each time seeing improvements. Thanks Paul for the great work you do to help us become better runners Kim has been battling injury and soreness as he got back into running. Since our first session he hasn’t missed a beat! Great work mate!!

19.01.2022 PB!! Absolutely stoked and super proud of this guy on breaking 3hrs in the #shepparton #marathon It’s been a barrier @voppppppp has been trying to crack and this morning consider it cracked. Well done mate!!! #whotaughtyoutorun #thebalancedrunner

18.01.2022 This guy rolled down to his local #parkrun this morning. Dropped a 15.30... you’re welcome. PB. #whotaughtyoutorun #thebalancedrunner

17.01.2022 This is what @runthebayrelay can do to you. Whilst looking pretty broken after the 3rd leg, I was actually stoked!! Get on board for this year! ..... I was broken. #thebalancedrunner

16.01.2022 Our man @thewolfferine did a couple of sessions before dropping his last Marathon PB. Looking forward to doing some more work with him! Old on the left: shoulder rotation, hip rotation resulting in a lower flatter movement. New on the right: straighter, stronger and more bounce from better hip extension. #whotaughtyoutorun #thebalancedrunner

16.01.2022 PB!! Congratulations to balanced runner Ivan Dennis on breaking his 5K PB, again!! Reward for effort and persistence. Well done mate! #whotaughtyoutorun #thebalancedrunner

16.01.2022 SHIN PAIN: Too often I see stories suggesting the way to combat this pain is through strength exercises and rolling. Whilst important for rehab and performance, this doesn’t address the reason for the pain! More thought needs to go into the movements that are being made when running. #whotaughtyoutorun #thebalancedrunner

15.01.2022 A massive congratulations to balanced runner @romeothemoose on his run at the Athletics World Championships in Doha. I’ve learnt a lot from this fella and it was a pleasure watching you compete at the highest level and do a bloody good job doing it. You’re a superstar. #whotaughtyoutorun #thebalancedrunner

15.01.2022 TESTIMONIAL - Online balanced runner @imroycer81 has a strong background in swimming and a self confessed non runner, after 4 sessions I think Daniel is starting to get the hang of this running caper. I have been a runner since 1999 when I decided I did not want to get out of shape during the off seasons of my collegiate swimming career. Over time I developed a real love for running which grew stronger as I transitioned into triathlon and then into long distance triathlo...n. I never ran as a kid and certainly never had any coaching on form. Running has always been my biggest limiter as a triathlete and I have always felt like the proverbial fish out of water while running. I always had the sense that I was forcing it and expending more energy than I should. During Summer 2018 I heard The Balanced Runner on the Triathlon Taren Podcast and loved what he had to say and his methodology. After seeing Taren’s successful run at Challenge Roth I decided to contact Paul and see if he could take me to the next level. From the jump, Paul broke down running form in a way that is easily digestible and fun. His method of focusing incremental change has resulted in steady improvements over the last few months. I visit with Paul via WhatsApp video chat every 4-5 weeks and we focus on one or two small cues to focus on for the next few weeks. I honestly can’t believe the results. Every week I feel more and more like a runner. With each week I feel like I am unlocking some kind of hidden skillset I never knew I had. When I look at video of myself over the last few months the transformation is evident and substantial. With all the insane money I spend on Ironman races, the money spent for my sessions with Paul is by far the best investment I have made in my athletic life for years. I can’t thank Paul enough and I can’t wait to keep working with him. Running is fun again and I feel like I am just scratching the surface! #whotaughtyoutorun #thebalancedrunner See more

15.01.2022 ONLINE Athlete Joelle from Washington DC had left knee surgery to repair articular cartilage a couple of years ago. As a result she developed a hitch in her gait trying to protect the damaged knee. What is shown here in the left video is how the body has tried to protect the knee through movement, which increases the likelihood of injury elsewhere! Joelle had zero pain in her knee when running, runs a lot and loves running but had no idea how exaggerated her uneven and damaging movements had become. The comparison of new way on the right after one session shows how quickly you can start the change process. This is by no means the finished product but instead a work in progress to allow Joelle to move freely and enjoy her running so much more. #whotaughtyoutorun #thebalancedrunner

13.01.2022 PB!!! Congratulations to balanced runner @badgalpheebs who broke her half marathon at #busselton 70.3 on Sunday by almost 8 minutes! Also qualifying for the 70.3 World Championships next year in Taupo. Great stuff Pheebs. #whotaughtyoutorun #thebalancedrunner

10.01.2022 PB!!! This is Will. Let’s get over the fact he just did a 55min PB in the Marathon at #goldcoast What I’m proudest of is previously, every time @willcumming12 started to build his kilometres like clockwork the shin pain began. Will went his whole 14 week prep without shin pain! Sure, there were the normal fatigue and day long niggles. But no shin pain!! To see Will put the time and effort in and to see him grow in confidence in his body and in himself has been a pleasure. #whotaughtyoutorun #thebalancedrunner

10.01.2022 PB!! Congratulations to balanced runner @mcallisterjeff who dropped a 20sec PB at the Sydney Morning Herald half marathon last weekend. With interrupted training, traveling OS for work and moving to Sydney all throughout. Great work Jeff and look forward to seeing you for a run when you’re back. @hunter.athletics x @thebalancedrunner does it again! #whotaughtyoutorun #thebalancedrunner

08.01.2022 ISSUES WITH SKILL ACQUISITION and THE BALANCED RUNNERS APPROACH Found this the other day, and liked it, as it recognises the mired (stuck in the mud) thinking w...hen it comes to movement. An approach that 'the Balanced Runner' continually seeks to overcome. ' .... as skill acquisition is still in its infancy, researchers are still trying to figure out what best practices are, to enhance the motor learning process for complex, applied motor skills outside of the lab setting. Traditional approaches to skill acquisition have failed to capture motor learning as a reflection of exploratory activity. In other words, we are still reproducing static representations of a movement, conditioning athletes to follow demonstrations overloaded with instruction (i.e. over-coaching) and, therefore, we seem to be losing sight of the actual complexity of movement in performance and environment. This is particularly apparent in the youth coaching methods in developed countries by the means of repetitive, non-exploratory drills (i.e. line drills).' As stated in previous articles, 'the Balanced Runner' does not use any of the traditional methods mentioned above, we (exclusively) use methods we have developed by us over the past 20 years. These methods have been refined, and refined and refined again as athletes with specific movement problems and needs, have required 'original' thinking. Yes, our athletes are the ones that have taught us the 'method' and methods/systems we currently use. And I say currently use, as there will undoubtedly be another athlete come along, who will lead us to adapt some part or form of our training! Perhaps, you could say that by recognising running/movement flaws of each individual, we are in a 'athlete led' paradigm!!!!!

06.01.2022 Old on the top. New on the bottom. This is one cue, not focused on landing but movement. Movement and position creates your landing. This is the third session Nathan and I have done together however this was done yesterday with one cue. #whotaughtyoutorun #thebalancedrunner

01.01.2022 FOOT STRIKE - Heel or Mid-foot?.... WRONG QUESTION! For a long time the question (or debate) about foot strike has been a focal point for some elements of the health and fitness industry, but is this the wrong/appropriate question? If we employ critical or logical thought processes to this, is this not only outcome focused? Should the real question be "What is the ’situation' of the body and what movement is generated from that position?" IF you are in a stable, good positi...on and moving well then you are more likely to land underneath or closer to your centre of mass. If you are landing closer to your centre of mass you are more LIKELY to be landing mid foot. When we focus on the foot we are looking at an extremity (i.e. outcome)... which is at the end of a moving part (the leg)... governed by a stimulus below (the earth) and above (the body). Let’s starting looking at the stimulus instead of the outcome. #whotaughtyoutorun #thebalancedrunner
