25.01.2022 10 Little Quirky Things About Me: 1. I used to take groups caving and absolutely loved it. But as I get older, being in confined spaces brings on claustrophobia. Challenging when I need to pee in a plane or use small changing rooms. 2. I burn incense almost every day just because I love the smell of sandalwood and it reminds me that Im still a little bit of a hippy at heart.... 3. My knees are stuffed. I've had 6 arthroscopes and one knee replacement. Thank you Mother Nature for gifting me osteo arthritis. Next joints to suffer were my feet. Now Ive come to terms that Ill never be a hand model either as each joint is gnarly and they look like a caricature of a fairytale wicked witch hands. 4. I'm a wee bit of a petrol head. My favourite is a 67 Porsche 911S Coupe in sunburnt orange although I'm now quite into the 67 Shelby Mustang or a claret coloured 69 E-Type Jaguar hardtop Coupe. I however, drive a simple 2003 Toyota Rav4 - nothing fancy, economical, and reliable. 5. I'm ridiculously punctual. I break out into a sweat if Im late for anything. 6. I've moved 23 times! I know, crazy hey? Think I get twitchy staying in one place too long. Although Ive just moved out of an old Hells Angels house after living there for 7 years - the longest Ive stayed anywhere since I was 19 with my parents. 7. I'm so not a girly-girl. But I always buy good quality and style. I own 2 handbags - thats it! Shoes - 12 pairs. Makeup? Apart from a lipstick, theres a manky 8 year old mascara floating in my bathroom drawer. It's comical to watch me try and put on mascara. 8. I don't have a musical bone in my body. I can't sing, in fact I've been told to stop singing when I'm belting out a tune. That doesn't stop me from whooping it up when no one is around. 9. I love puzzles. Sudokus. Jigsaws. Crosswords. Word search. Anagrams. Prefer to do them from a newspaper than on a tablet or phone. Something about scribbling possible answers in the sidelines. 10. A dear friend of 40+ years told me when I was 20 why do you care what others think of you?. It took half a lifetime for me to just not give a shit what people might say or think about me. Hallelujah!

25.01.2022 Arent polar bears just the best? In December and January I spent 3 weeks in Japan and two highlights were seeing the Snow Monkeys in the wild and the polar bears at #uenozoo As Ive mentioned in a previous post, Im not a fan of zoos and frankly, stumbled across this by accident and ventured in.... Within the first few exhibits Id seen kangaroos, emus and cockatoos. These caged creatures roam free where I live and seeing them in enclosures was heart breaking. I couldnt bring myself to visit the pandas or some of the other animals such as the wild cats of Africa. And really, the polar bears fit into that category as well. Their space to live and roam at this zoo was the size of the average Australian house. But you cant have empathy unless you see these creatures up close and personal and NOT in their natural environment. What was intriguing was how both of these polar bears had their own personalities. Their interactions with each other showed tenderness and playfulness if I want to put an anthropomorphic spin on it. I spent over an hour with these majestic creatures and ended up sitting down next to the enclosure eating my snack and just observing them, while other tourists came and went. I snapped over 300 photos and several videos, somewhat hypnotised by their antics, despaired by their life in a zoo. As a life long environmentalist, advocate for our oceans, our wildlife, concerns about pollution, overfishing and most of all, climate change - my time with these polar bears reinforced my commitment to doing what I can to secure the future for all life. All photos taken on an iPhone 7+ because Im too lazy to carry a camera body and lenses. Im not swayed from doing my part for the future. 25.01.2022 100,000 members! I gotta be doing something right! After building a Facebook group to 100,000 members, Ive decided to stepped aside. Recycling, repurposing and upcycling are a passion of mine and seeing the continual stream of clever and creative ideas on this Facebook group has been a real buzz. ... Although Im struggling with mixed emotions, I have new projects to focus on, and I know the new Admin will bring a breath of fresh air which is the best thing for the group. The sister Instagram page Im still yet to decide how to transition. The followers are so lovely and dedicated to upcycling. Fortunately, have time to think about how to best honour the followers and decide how to tweak the group @recycleandrepurpose Any thoughts on the next step appreciated. . . . . @recycleandrepurpose #recycleandrepurpose #upcycle # recycle #reuse #reducereuserecycle #repurposeandupcycle #debislinger #thewanderingreviewer #thebarefootcamper
25.01.2022 How cool are businesses these days? My old @nalgene bottles needed upgrading. 30 years in the outdoors does that to some of your collection. As we are in still in lockdown here in #melbourneaustralia I ordered these online from @wildearthaustralia and they were in my post box within a few days.... Considering our postal service has been under a lot of COVID19 pressure, thats remarkable. As with my recent purchases, thought has gone into the postal packaging. The plastic bag they came in is recyclable (thanks to a nice card included) but Im going to reuse it told hold my metho bottle. Plus a bonus of a voucher for @nakedwinesaus - Ill take that thank you! Now Im ready, set, go for more #trangia cooking this week. Ill post more pics of these containers in use soon but wanted to share how Im loving sustainable practices by businesses these days. . . . . #thebarefootcamper #campingtips #campinghacks #campingweekend #campingout #campinggear #campcooking #campingwithfriends #campingadventures #campingwithfamily #outdoorcooking #outdoorgear #outdooradventures #exploreoutdoors #lovecamping #tentcamping #wildearthaustralia #nalgenebottles #trangiastove #trangiasweden
23.01.2022 Its blue, so its gotta be good right? Well yes it is! This Is called a blue dog and although Im not a big Margherita fan, this was the perfect drink on a hot day in the #southoffrance Took me nearly two hours to drink it was sooo chilled and sooo big.... 23.01.2022 Here are my nifty @nalgene containers for camping and travelling. This week I was finally able to fill and label these new babies and put in my camping kit ready for the next trip. From left to right: soy sauce, tomato sauce (ketchup), canola oil, olive oil, honey, sugar and vegemite (similar to marmite) on top of sugar.... I used to put stickers on the bottles to help those who didnt know what Id written on them. Eg a on the honey and on the sauce and so on. If I keep these in a cool dry place, theyll last months. Coming soon will be how I carry flour, coffee, tea, milk powder and more. These #nalgenebottles are also useful for shampoo, conditioner, moisturiser etc. as well. Heading out to @thegrampians once our lockdown restrictions are eased and safe to travel. . . . . #thebarefootcamper #campingtips #campinghacks #campingweekend #campingout #campinggear #campcooking #campingwithfriends #campingadventures #campingwithfamily #outdoorcooking #outdoorgear #outdooradventures #outdoorwomen #oneplanetoutdoor #exploreoutdoors #lovecamping #tentcamping #campingcontainers #nalgenebottle #nalgenearoundtheworld #grampiansnationalpark #thegrampians

23.01.2022 Podcasts. What are you listening to? I walk for both exercise and downtime for at least an hour every day and podcasts have become an integral part of my routine. So I thought Id share my current faves. Better Than Yesterday by @osher_gunsberg is my twice weekly check in with amazing guests from around the world plus a dose of Oshers candid update on whats happening in his life. Highly recommend.... @theguiltyfeminist has always been a fave, that is witty, relevant and funny. Cant get enough of this one. @thewabisabiseries is new but host Michelles honest interviews on unlikely conversations on uncomfortable topics has become a weekly favourite. Zealot was full on that I listened to some time ago and well worth a revisit. The incredibly talented @yumichild covers all those female topics that we want to hear about but no one wants to address. Ladies We Need To Talk is brilliant. Alone - a short podcast series but well worth a listen. A change of pace for me. @99percentinvisible just keeps on giving. Roman Mars has a voice that draws you into his world of design, architecture, objects, sounds and more. Ive got lost in the world of 99% many times. A must listen. The Hook Up is pretty out there for some but I find its frankness refreshing. Ive learnt a lot about the diversity of people in our world. @realcrimeprofile is hosted by experts in their field who really know their stuff. No sordid approach to crime here. This is science based, critical thinking that unpacks crime under the lens of professionals. So what podcasts are you listening to?

20.01.2022 What did I do when bitten by a venomous snake? I've been bitten twice now. Occupational hazard of working full time as an outdoor full time. The second bite however, was far more serious. I'd been bushwalking with a group of kids for a few days and we'd met up for lunch with 40 other students and staff. It was November, the start of summer and no snakes had been seen.... As it was the end of the program, I took off my walking boots and gaiters and put on a pair of teva sandals. Suddenly I stepped on a massive brown snake which reared up and bit me high on the calf. It slithered away. My colleagues, experienced guides, applied a swab, two compression bandages and an air splint. I was completely immobilised to reduce the venom travelling through my body. It took two hours to get to hospital, where a cannula was put in the back of my hand, just in case. Then I became something of a 'side show' to the interns as the 'first snake bite' of the season. It's important to know what snake has bitten you so the right treatment can be administered. The Emergency Department doctor came and asked "what sort of snake bit you". I said "a brown snake" to which he sarcastically replied "how do you know it was a brown snake?" to which I equally sarcastically replied "because it was brown!" For 6 hours I was fine. Swab was negative, urine was negative, but blood showed positive. The doctor decided to remove the air splint. That's when it got interesting. My pulse went from 54 to 104 in 60 seconds. Still unwilling to give me the antivenin because they couldn't be sure which snake bit me, I was treated with adrenaline and oxygen. It worked. I was fine. An overnight stay and I fully recovered. I'm still asked to write my story for schools and companies or speak at events - all because of a snake bite. Interestingly, I'm still not afraid of snakes, but have a lot more respect for them. Facts: Approx 3000 snake bites in Australia per year, with 550 people admitted to Australian hospitals. Average death rate is 2 per year.

20.01.2022 It took nearly 10 years but I finally made some of the flotsam and jetsam from a trip to Borneo, Cambodia, Vietnam and Komodo island into a simple outdoor sculpture. 19.01.2022 Travel Tip: If travelling overseas with medication, make sure your doctor writes a letter listing what medication or medical devices youre taking with you. Two reasons: 1 is that in some countries, certain medications can be illegal unless you have a letter from a doctor. 2. It can be difficult finding the medications you need where youre going or cant trust the quality of the product available. Always take enough for the trip but I suggest adding on a few extra days in ca...se your trip is delayed for any reason. I was stopped at Melbourne International Airport on my return from South America. Sniffer dogs had particular interest in my backpack. When I brought out my bag of medications Diomax for altitude sickness, antihistamine, paracetamol and a broad spectrum antibiotic, I was cleared to go. Those sniffer dogs are amazing. 18.01.2022 Th results are in. Drum roll please! After 3 weeks of using @natural.approach.au #bicarbfreedeodorant I can honestly say Im very, very pleased with the results.... Ive put it through its paces with some serious walking and riding sessions. Plus with warmer weather here in Victoria, its had a few days facing the sweats as I pick up my walking pace under the spring sun. Gotta get sweaty to make sure its up to the challenge. Honestly, it didnt miss a beat and kept me odour free all day and night. Ive used Mitchum for years as it is a great deodorant that I dont have to use everyday. But Im looking to go all natural and achieve the same results. @natural.approach.au certainly lasted two days without reapplication. Yeh! Bonus! @natural.approach.au is as good as the big commercial brands, in fact better because its handmade / homemade / Australian made. Thank you to @kitmaii for the opportunity to try the product and for the little wooden spatulas to apply the deodorant to my pits. I did end up just using my my index finger to apply and would wipe it clean in the sink after application. Dont let this change of routine stop you from using a natural deodorant. Its a minor detour from the norm but well worth it and soon, it becomes part of your regular routine. Side note: did a light underarm shave and the deodorant came through with flying colours. Thats the real test. I have two daughters who are 22 & 18 and are big advocates for farmers markets, growing their own veggies and mindful of what they put in and on their bodies. Theyll be putting it to the test leading up to Christmas. They are savvy young women so cant wait for their opinions as well. Thanks to @kitmaii for supplying me. Most grateful to be able to take another step forward to using all natural and locally made products. Highly recommend. Contact: @natural.approach.au or @kitmaii to learn more about the range. They post global / support local. 16.01.2022 Day 1 of testing @natural.approach.au #creamdeodorant and Im using the #bohemian tin thats #bicarbfree For some months now Ive been trying to step up my ethical approach to personal products and lifestyle. As I dont wear makeup or spend money on fancy hair treatments and live pretty simply, I felt I was in front, but there is so much more I can do. Having @tilda_b_ live with me last year, she showed me how easy it was for her to minimise her use of plastic, has gone from... vegetarian to vegan and made use of everyday products to create herself a home. Now, although I was once a vegetarian, I doubt I can commit to a vegan life (oh the cheese), but I can still be mindful of the food I eat. So I have these cool #naturalapproachdeodorants from @kitmaii in the cutest little tins to put to the test. Ill have to think of a way of upcycling these. Have you got any? Ill check back to you in a few weeks and let you know how the pits are going. 16.01.2022 Today I made two more videos. Both cooking with a @trangia_sweden stove. For now, Ive made my recipes simple as they are aimed mostly to secondary school students on their outdoor education camping trips. Many students who go on a journey style #outdooreducationprogram will use a #trangiastove to prepare their meals but Ive seen first hand how they struggle with what to cook as there are so many factors to take into account such as:... * how many in your cooking group * dietary requirements * food allergies and intolerances * access to refrigeration * location - bush, snow, desert, coast, mountains * how many days away - this could be from an overnight to 20+ days * experience cooking - meal planning and food preparation is a challenge for some * motivation - its easier to use pre-prepared meals but they can potentially be overpackaged, contain many chemical additives and have low nutritional value. Although the recipes are at an introductory level, over time Ill bring out the big guns and share more complex options for breakfast and dinner. This photo is of porridge - bush style! Itll be posted in the next week. If you have any favourite recipes that youve found useful camping and youd like to share, please DM / PM me. 16.01.2022 What do you like taking photos of? I travel to meet new people, immerse myself in different cultures and eat local food. This gorgeous boy in #siemreapcambodia had eyes that melted my heart.... His mother works 16 hours a day as a masseur for tourists. His father a #tuktuk driver for long days. Their two children are looked after by their grandmother. They literally lived in a one room hut on the side of a road. We made friends with the father and he invited us to meet his family. They were very proud of their humble dwelling and spoilt us with fresh coconuts and cups of tea. Wed brought with us fresh food, rice and soccer balls for the kids which all the local kids joined in for a game. The only photo they had was a wedding photo of the mum and dad which actually was just their heads photoshopped onto wedding attired people. So we printed out the photos we took of the family and their neighbours and gave them as a gift for their generous hospitality. It still brings a tear to my eye how grateful they were for something that we take for granted on a daily basis. This is why I take photos of people - to remember the diversity of everyone around the world and grounds me daily on how fortunate I am. 14.01.2022 What snack do you eat on a hike? Scroggin is the common word used by Australia and New Zealand bushwalkers. Any use of the foreign termTrail Mix is dismissed quickly by diehard outdoorsy people. It's a curious word, somewhat like 'spondonicles' we camp cookers' use. So why 'scroggin'? Well there are various acronyms, but I like this one: S - Sultanas... C - Chocolate R - Raisins O - Other / Orange Peel G - Ginger G - Glucose I - Imagination N - Nuts What makes up scroggin? Well, I put it out on Facebook to my friends recently to see what their favourite ingredients are and this is the range of possibilities: Nuts - pine nuts, dry roasted almonds, cashews, Brazil, macadamias, peanuts, walnuts Dried fruit - goji berries, apple, sultanas, cranberries, dates, peaches, crystallised ginger, apricots, pineapple, mango, banana chips, shredded coconut Seeds - roasted sunflower, pepitas Chocolate - carob, dark, milk chocolate chips, white buds, M & M's, Smarties, Other - pretzels, soy crisps (chilli & lime), yoghurt or chocolate covered sultanas, I reckon the ratio is about: 30% nuts 30% dried fruit 10% seeds 15% chocolate 15% other I have a particular passion for yoghurt covered anything and pretzels and cashews. Rule 101 according to my lifelong bushwalker friend Louis is - no prospecting and never eat from someone else's bag. What do you put in your scroggin bag?

05.01.2022 Funny what you see when you climb up a mountain. Ive worked at this location, #cathedralrangestatepark many times and on this day I had 3 hours to myself. So decided to walk / climb from the carpark at #sugarloafsaddle to the summit and back down. 2kms from base to top and back, the peak rising to 920m in 80 minutes. I took the steep and precarious route up through #wellscave which has a tight squeeze through massive rocks plus a section of very exposed climbing routes.... I happened to be following a couple of bushwalkers who were racing to get to the top so I continued my own adventure. As I summited, soaking up the spectacular views, I could hear some odd noises. From behind some bushes a walking boot appeared. Then a sock. Then I realised they were..... celebrating summiting in their own way! Whatever floats your boat! To make it even memorable, on that trip, I came across a mob of kangaroos, 3 rock wallabies, two lyre birds and a monitor lizard. Now thats what I call a great day out. Looking forward to COVID19 restrictions being eased so I can explore again. . . . . #thebarefootcamper #campingtips #campinghacks #campingwithfriends #campingadventures #outdoorgear #outdooradventures #outdoorwomen #exploreoutdoors #lovecamping #lyrebirds @ Sugarloaf Peak, Cathedral Ranges, Victoria, Australia

05.01.2022 Mum passed away in March aged 87. Despite being fit, 7 years of the terrible disease dementia, finally took its toll - as it does! Dad is on his own with only the crazy Jack Russell dog, Lucy to keep him company. At 89 dad is incredibly well, fit and healthy, he walks his regular 10,000 steps a day, Prepares his own wholesome, veggie based foods and a positive mindset. And he still has a commitment to social justice and fairness. This week I spent several days with him (as I... do every couple of weeks) and each time I uncover more tales of his life. Today I chatted with him in his workshop and he showed me these two tools that his father (born 1905) engraved into his son’s first tools. E.H.S. If he hadn’t told me I would probably never have noticed. Dad was a cabinet maker by trade, builder by profession and became a ‘trade teacher’ so he could spend more time with us kids. Over the last few days he’s been in his workshop making wooden toys for his 8 great grand children. Spending time with my dad is a gift. His everlasting love for his wife (my mother) is in my heart every day. I only wish we can all head to our older years with someone who loves, cares and looks after us as much as dad showed for mum. The sadness of mum’s death runs parallel with the joy of learning more and more about my dad and how we have more in common than I’d ever realised. Hug your parents, your kids, your family because we never know when life will take us on a path we’d not expected. I love you dad. #thebarefootcamper #loveyourfamily #missyoumum #loveyourparents @ Mooroolbark, Victoria
04.01.2022 Impressive huh? But would you visit? I haven’t visited The ‘Golden Bridge’ located outside of #datrang which was built after my last trip to #vietnam This elegant and stunning design seemingly has two giant stone hands holding the walkway above.... Completed in 2018, this 150 metre long (490 feet) fibreglass and mesh structure perched 1400 metres above sea level in the Ba Na hills eclipses everything nearby. With 1.5 million visitors since it’s opened, the Golden Bridge has become one of the country’s most popular attractions. If you’re wanting to get that perfect Instagram photo, you may be disappointed. This place is packed - all the time. Even during COVID-19 tourism times. Those tourists who are ‘box tickers’ would certainly have this on their hit list. I become somewhat ambivalent about these obvious money making tourist attractions that often don’t have any accountability to the natural environment. If I had he opportunity, would I visit? Probably not. But then, I’ve seen so many global man made structures that I know I’m more drawn to nature and history over commercialism and tourism. What about you. Would you visit this? . . . #thebarefootcamper #goldenbridgevietnam #vietnamgoldenbridge #vietnamtourism #traveljunkies
