25.01.2022 It was good to hear yesterday that Planning Minister Vickie Chapman announced that Contributory Items will continue to be recognised in the state’s new Planning and Design Code. Their status were planned to be removed in the new system so this is a wonderful turnaround. Whilst these items do not have the same protections as State or Local heritage protected items, they are important nonetheless and deserve to be included in the new planning system.

25.01.2022 Whilst its very important to put the right rubbish in the right bin, its even better to compost it. Fantastic for your garden, use less water, and less for collection There are rebates available on compost bins and worm farms from council. Up to 50% of the cost (maximum $50), and you can even order them through council - details below... https://www.westtorrens.sa.gov.au//Grants_donations_rebate

23.01.2022 The entertainment and arts community has been described as the first to suffer and the last to recover during the pandemic. This assistance will help our community bounce back.

23.01.2022 I stumbled upon an old photo of the Mile End Post Office which was on 40 Henley Beach Road from 1901 to 1987 where Jewellery Masters currently are. (see current photo in comments)

21.01.2022 I know that this is news from 2 weeks ago, but it is interesting reading. Especially with the middle poll showing that 78% of respondents are in favour of a tunnel (of some description) rather than another T2T. Lets hope that the Government is listening! #TimeToTunnel

21.01.2022 We welcome today's state budget announcement that it is #timetotunnel. The South Road Inner West Action Group looks forward to engaging with government and othe...r stakeholders on options for entry and exit points etc. We must ensure the connectedness of our suburbs can be maintained in a way that preserves the heritage and liveability of our vibrant community. See details on page 6 onwards from today's budget speech. https://statebudget.sa.gov.au/bud/2020-21_budget_speech.pdf There are still many unanswered question. At this stage we do not have any additional information, however will continue to keep you updated as we hear more.

21.01.2022 This is what illegal dumping looks like. It can mean having to pay a $1000 fine (or more) But most of all it makes our community look like RUBBISH! So whats the alternative?... You can arrange for a legal, free & easy Hard Waste collection. All details are here: https://www.westtorrens.sa.gov.au//Waste_and_re/Hard_waste. Also, for electrical items you can alternatively take them to a UNPLUG N DROP collection point. The nearest to us is at Bunnings Mile End (Cage located in foyer) Other outlets can be found on the UNPLUG N DROP website. https://www.electronicrecyclingaustralia.com.au/unplug-n// So please. Keep our community beautiful as well as avoid a hefty fine and dispose of thoughtfully

20.01.2022 Last Tuesday night at Council a motion was passed which initiates a COVID-19 Arts and Culture Grants program that will provide financial assistance to eligible organisations, groups and individuals impacted by COVID-19 in West Torrens. The arts community has been described as the first to close, and the last to open when this pandemic hit ... and the City of West Torrens has a very large arts community. ... The Arts and Culture Grants Program will support: LOCAL Visual Artists, Performance Artists, Musical groups and solo musicians. More information provided attached, and more to be posted as it becomes available https://aicsa.net.au/aicsa-calls-for-an-additional-10m-sa-/

20.01.2022 An update from the South Road Inner West Action Group and Mayor Coxon. There is an optimism for a tunnel, but will find out for sure around early July The artistic graphic is precisely that.... (so dont get too worried about where St Georges College is etc!) See more

20.01.2022 The West Torrens Art Prize is one of my favourite times of year. Unfortunately it was about six months late due to Covid-19. Also the award presentation was not open to the public (or me!) due to (you guessed it) Covid-19.... However the exhibition is now open for viewing in the Hamra Centre. I say this every year, 'The quality of the work keeps getting better and better!', and this year is no exception. Below are some of the works (my faves), but please have a look for yourself. The theme this year was ‘Sustainability’. Well done to all those who contributed.

20.01.2022 It would be sad to see this Torrensville treasure demolished. Whilst this is owned by the West Torrens City Council, since 1969 the Former Sub-Control Station - Air Raid Shelter has housed the clubrooms, gallery and museum of the Australian Society of Magicians (Assembly No. 2 Adelaide) and the International Brotherhood of Magicians (Ring 148). Under their lease agreement with the West Torrens council they have paid no rent for the site but in return for its use agreed to mai...ntain it and to conduct occasional public performances and lectures. They achieve this during History Month each year in May (Pre-Covid). I had the privilege of seeing this in 2019 where the magicians put on magic shows as well as talk about the Sub-control Station's history. It was the best $5 I ever spent! Hopefully it wasn't their final performance Some photos from that performance below. The highlight for me was seeing so much magician props, photos and memorabilia. Pure magic!

20.01.2022 Good news on this issue.

20.01.2022 Do you know someone in our community who makes West Torrens a better place? Why not nominate them as Citizen of the Year or other award to show that you appreciate their efforts? Nominations close 20 November 2020... Details below.

20.01.2022 Yesterday I had the honour of attending Mrs Harris Shop, SALA opening of Stobie Pole art which is situated along the length of Jervois Street Torrensville. Information regarding all of the works and the 35 artists involved can be found here: http://www.mrsharrisshop.com.au/stobie-pole-art/ ... but even better take a walk along Jervois Street and see for yourself, then why not drop into Mrs Harris Shop?... Attached are just a few of these beautiful works.

20.01.2022 TIME TO TUNNEL NOW I have been a local resident of Mile End all my entire life and we don’t want to see our community divided into two areas with a freeway thro...ugh the middle. We need the State Government to make the decision as soon as possible to start works on a tunnel. Time To Tunnel NOW!

20.01.2022 Please see Charlottes post below It appears that we may have a possible dog baiter in the Kings Reserve area. I will try to find out more information. ... ... but in the meantime look out for your pets when out walking.

20.01.2022 An excellent article by Matthew Abraham about the South Road fiasco. #TimeToTunnel

19.01.2022 A wonderful cause ... and a great chance to grab a bargain! 19b Daringa Street (ie. not George Street)

19.01.2022 TIME TO TUNNEL!

18.01.2022 A fantastic meal! Thanks Mat and Pichai!

18.01.2022 Not Tunnel or Lockdown related, but an issue that I know that you are all interested in. The new Planning and Design Code. There are some improvements from what was on offer earlier in the year ... and some not so good. At the moment SA Planning believes that the changes MAY be activated around March 2021.... The Main website to work from is here https://yoursay.westtorrens.sa.gov.au/planning-and-design-c On that page there is a link called 'Consultation change maps - West Torrens' which has a map of West Torrens showing what Zone you are in (use your zoom facility as it is very small letters). (eg. EN for Established Neighbourhood Zone - which is the vast majority of Thebarton Ward) 2019 is there 1st as a comparison, so make sure that you are referring to the 2020 map. Then there are the Neighbourhood Zone fact sheets that relate to your zone on the map which shows much of the information relevant to your area. * Housing Diversity Neighbourhood Zone * Suburban Neighbourhood Zone * General Neighbourhood Zone * Established Neighbourhood Zone Any questions let me know. Obviously the information sessions have been deferred to a later date due to Covid. All the best for you and your families during Lockdown. Stay safe everybody

16.01.2022 What a lovely spot for a story telling!

16.01.2022 Here is some basic information about Tunnel Boring Machines which could be used to create a quality product for South Road. As can be seen, they are nothing new and due to modern technology the price is comparable to other methods such as an open trench (eg. T2T) where massive property acquisitions would be required along the length of South Road.

16.01.2022 Due to recent events I particularly enjoyed this mural and its timely message at our wonderful Loveon Cafe ... and the cups & saucers on top are a nice touch!

15.01.2022 A wonderful idea! Im looking forward to utilising some bench space!

15.01.2022 A few spots still available ... and at our fantastic new facilities at Lockleys Oval!

15.01.2022 Judith speaking on why a tunnel is important to our community

14.01.2022 Does anyone remember RJ?

14.01.2022 Dropped in to welcome the lads from Octeine Coffee to the neighbourhood! Pictured are Nick & Mitch who make a stellar cup of joe! And a great thing is Dogs Are Welcome! ... ... so I reckon me and Joey Ramone will make another visit! Located at 2 Jervois St Torrensville. See more

14.01.2022 I visited Maniax Axe Throwing at Light Terrace Thebarton on Friday just to see what it was all about. Jason showed me around and I was very impressed with the layout, facilities but most of all their attention to safety. Looks like a great place for a get together after work and unwind!

13.01.2022 A bit of a media barrage this morning with the Hon Tom Koutsantonis, Peter Malinauskas and members of the South Road Inner West Action Group including Mandy Doolan and James Franzon owner of the Hotel Hilton (behind the media!) Explaining our confusion and disappointment in learning about the leaked government documents which has left our community without the tunnel that we request. However, more questions than answers at this stage. ... Some clarity about this would be appreciated. #TimeToTunnel https://indaily.com.au//leaked-documents-reveal-south-rd/

12.01.2022 Excellent! Another eatery open up in our area. ... and what a spot! Bloom is now open on the corner of Holland & Winwood streets Thebarton, overlooking the beautiful Karrawirra Parri, right next to the footbridge to Adam Street.... Please keep in mind that Holland Street is currently getting a major make over (so that the southern section will be just as pretty as the northern bit!) So entry by Stirling Street would be the way to go.

12.01.2022 It was an honour today, along with Mayor Michael Coxon, to be able to attend the official opening of the new NovitaTech Assistive Technology Centre officially opened by their patron His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC, Governor of South Australia at 1 South Road Thebarton. It was very interesting, especially hearing about 3D printed orthotics which has replaced the old plaster casts of years ago

12.01.2022 This is a photograph taken around 1920 of P.A. Leanes baker shop at Thebarton. Three of the businesss horses and carts with drivers as well as two bakers (sta...nding) are in the foreground. A car with four people aboard is on the far right of the photo. Percival Arthur Leane (1887-1954) ran his bakery at 28 Walsh Street Southwark (later Thebarton) from c.1916-c.1964. His son Alfred Annis Leane (1918-2015) one of Leanes nine children from two marriages also operated a bakery at Thebarton for some years. See more

09.01.2022 Those of you who are interested in tunnels and tunnel boring machines (TBM) might be interested in watching Sydneys Super Tunnels on SBS On Demand Absolutely fascinating. One fact that struck me was that yes, at around $15 million these machines are not cheap ... but then neither is the wide scale acquisition of properties required for the open trench option.... However whilst Sydney, who already have quite an extensive tunnel system have bought 9 TBMs, South Australia is dragging its feet about purchasing one! Yes I do realise that Sydney is bigger that Adelaide, but surely our heritage and our local community deserves better?

09.01.2022 Please find attached the rescheduled times for the community consultation sessions with the Department for Infrastructure and Transport on 5 and 12 December. ...Registration forms for the sessions can be found at the bottom of the following link: https://dit.sa.gov.au/nsc/torrens_to_darlington See more

09.01.2022 More great things to do over the school holidays ... even off-line activities! Including Storytelling in our beautiful new outdoor garden area!

09.01.2022 Another journey into the Time Tunnel! Unfortunately I never did get to eat at The Abode of the Friendly Toad, but it sounds absolutely amazing. Did you ever eat there, or have a story to tell?... Please comment below. We would love to hear about it. See more

09.01.2022 ... as promised on Wednesdays post regarding the South Rd upgrade. Thanks Mayor Coxon.

08.01.2022 Yaaay! Best news Ive heard for some time!

08.01.2022 Last night in Council I moved a Motion without Notice which was passed unanimously. The motion was regarding the planned South Road upgrade. As you know, our Council, as well as our community are firmly behind a tunnel being built as opposed to an open trench running through our community which would undoubtedly destroy many South Australian heritage icons, businesses and homes for the sake of expediency.... My motion last night however focused on concerns for our local businesses and residents who are situated along South Road and have been living in a state of limbo for almost a year now, uncertain of their future. Will their business or home be bulldozed or not? The State Government stated last year that a decision on the South Road upgrade would be announced by Christmas (2019). This didnt occur and an announcement was expected in May. This didnt occur either and an announcement was due to be made in July. Yet, hundreds of South Road businesses and residents are still waiting for an announcement so that they can make plans about their future. This delay has occurred despite the efforts of our wonderful community and the hard work of the South Road Inner West Action Group seeking answers from the State Government. James Franzon and the Hilton Hotel is one of those affected, but there are many more. Motion Without Notice That: 1) Council notes that the previously advised notification date on the preferred option for the next stage of the upgrade of South Road in West Torrens of early July 2020 has not been met. 2) Council acknowledges the detrimental impact on our local business and residential community is significant as investment and development has stalled on South Road pending a decision from the State Government in relation to such matter. 3) Noting the above, the Mayor write to DPTI to request a specific timeline when it is likely that the decision on the preferred option for the upgrade of South Road in West Torrens will be made public.

07.01.2022 More great local businesses opening up needing your support

07.01.2022 There are still so many unanswered questions from yesterday's State Budget announcement and we don't have the answers. We have been advised that the Department... for Infrastructure and Transport will be holding some information sessions in the coming weeks. Please find attached a brochure detailing those sessions. They have also updated their dedicated Torrens to Darlington website with more information. https://dit.sa.gov.au/nsc/torrens_to_darlington and a direct link to FAQs https://dit.sa.gov.au//torrens_/frequently_asked_questions If you still have unanswered questions, we unfortunately don’t have any more information to what has been published and would encourage you to contact the Department: Phone: 1300 951 145 Email: [email protected]

07.01.2022 A decision will be made soon about this important change to our area. The South Road Inner West Action Group have been busy in pushing for the best option for our community, the tunnel option.

05.01.2022 Something to tell your favourite local restaurant or cafe about. In an attempt to assist local food businesses due to Covid-19 restrictions, West Torrens Council are now waiving the Application Fee as well as the Annual Permit Fee for outdoor dining. In addition to this the required risk assessments, will be undertaken by our City Assets section (instead of the applicant providing the risk assessment at their cost)... Please note that this initiative will expire on 30 September 2020. So in short, there has never been a better time to apply for outdoor dining for your business. So spread the word!!! More information below.

05.01.2022 Last Tuesday night West Torrens City Council voted unanimously for a Tunnel option on South Rd as per the attached minute entry from the meeting and the Department for Infrastructure and Transport document. (Option 2) As brief as the attached information is, it is the only actual details that we have with an announcement expected in 2-4 weeks time. The statement that the minutes speaks of is below:...Continue reading

04.01.2022 Regarding my previous post about the possible dog bait at Kings Reserve. We are keeping an eye on the area both physically as well by utilising IRIS, our transportable surveillance cameras in that specific area. Again, this seems to be an issue around Adelaide in general for some reason at the moment.... Please take care everyone.

04.01.2022 Thank you to everyone who attended our gathering today to officially launch #TimeToTunnel. It was a fantastic demonstration of support from our local community ...and elected members. Many thanks to Tom Koutsantonis MP and Cr Graham Nitschke for Thebarton Ward for speaking and Bob Lott from the Thebarton Theatre for being our official patron. Thanks also to Steve Georganas MP and West Torrens councillors for attending. It is clear our local elected members and council are unified in our position that the only solution for this area is a well planned and well executed tunnel. Thank you to our wonderful SRIWAG volunteers for all your efforts in making today a success. A summary of the speech made by Cath Cashen, SRIWAG co-convenor is provided below for those unable to attend. We will keep you updated with any developments as they come to light. In the meantime, keep the momentum going. Share posts of posters you’re displaying on your property. It’s #TimeToTunnel thanks to Maggie Elliot *************************** Numerous governments have tinkered with South Road over 50 years. Every upgrade north or south of us has channelled ever increasing volumes of long haul traffic onto our section of South Road, forcing out local businesses, and making residents frustrated and angry as our amenity, liveability and connectivity has steadily reduced. The government and DIT consistently tell us that there are only 2 options under consideration for the Torrens to Darlington section of the corridor (1 ) a sunken motorway (like through Croydon) and (2 ) a hybrid tunnel solution. It is still not yet clear whether there will be a tunnel through West Torrens. Option 1 being considered by the Government will split our community apart. It will wipe out hundreds of our homes and businesses, our cluster of heritage buildings, our hotels and our schools. Leaving in their place a legacy which would undeniably impact the whole of Adelaide bringing visual blight, noise, heat sinks, truncated suburbs and a city divided east west by a wide band of concrete and steel. When considering this option, Matt Abraham commented that the tunnel is a ‘no-brainer’, and we agree. Option 2 includes tunnels - potentially providing an underground corridor for safe and efficient movement of freight and long haul traffic through our neighbourhood without the mass destruction of our surface infrastructure and services. It would ultimately calm south road traffic and improve east west connectivity. Very importantly it would preserve our heritage and maintain the integrity of our suburbs - the aspiration of our group. But Option 2 is devoid of detail. We have sought clarification, but DIT and the Government are not yet ready to inform or consult with us. Our questions and issues are many.without this detail we can’t be assured our neighbourhood won’t be sliced up. We, the residents, business people and the people who manage and attend local schools and public facilities know this area. We should be informed and consulted immediately. This lack of certainty, no clear description of potential options and the absence of any consultation from the government/DIT is causing mounting anxiety and harm to our community, leading to reduced confidence, stagnation and depressed value for businesses and residences. Tunnelling technology has come a long way - it is best and a competitive preference for providing safe, fast and reliable movement of traffic through significant built up areas such as ours. It has provided the Marshall Government with the opportunity to crown the completion of the north South corridor with a state-of-the-art tunnel. We - the community, government and DIT are all in this together. It is time that we started working together. The corridor needs be finished and there is no doubt that it is TIME TO TUNNEL.

04.01.2022 A wonderful initiative! Let your favourite local business know about this. Great for Local businesses... Great for our frontline emergency service workers and those in need Great for the community! See more

04.01.2022 Following on from a recent post on the Holland Street Bridge these photos refer to the Cawthorne Street Bridge which was condemned in 1966. In 1922 the MTT ...decided to duplicate the track and as the streets in Southwark were rather narrow they decided to cross the Torrens at Cawthorne Street, one street east of Holland Street This bridge was of similar design. The duel line had been extended from Hindmarsh to Findon. The Cawthorne Bridge was officially opened on 14th January 1923. The very last tram ran to Findon on the 17th October 1953 making the two bridges redundant for trams. In 1954 the MTT handed the two bridges over to the two councils to avoid their demolition. Subsequently after some strengthening by the Highways Department, in May 1962 both bridges were opened to traffic, but with a 5 ton limit, to eliminate trucks from using the bridge. In 1966 with the very bad corrosion and flood waters undermining the northern abutment and pier of the Cawthome Bridge, it was condemned, and closed to all traffic and later demolished. Subsequently Cawthorne Street was closed off at Anderson Street on the northern end approaching the bridge and the land acquired by the Nathan Brewery. In 1986 the load limit on the Holland Street Bridge was reduced to two tons and in May 1990 because of the corrosion it was closed to vehicle traffic following the widening of Adam Street but remained open to pedestrians. On the 8th November 2010 barricades were erected both ends of Holland Street Bridge totally closing it to all traffic. See more

02.01.2022 As you may have heard, the tunnel (if it occurs) is now planned to only run from the River Torrens to the South Rd/James Congdon Rd intersection. Still, its a lot better than an open wound running through our community. ... and thankfully this cut & cover concept isnt on the agenda either.... That would also mean the demolition of the States heritage along that stretch. More information can be found here. https://dit.sa.gov.au//2020_Projects_Pipeline_Industry_Bri

01.01.2022 West End Brewery to close Terrible news Especially after Coke leaving Terrible for the state and for Thebarton ... Devastating for the workers employed there

01.01.2022 All playgrounds and outdoor gyms within West Torrens have now been re-opened after each park was cleaned and (most importantly) safety checked after being close...d for a number of months. Now that parks are open, we remind everyone to maintain social distancing and good hygiene practices to ensure everyone stays healthy. We have installed signage to provide health safety tips, including the fact that social distancing and gatherings of more than 10 are still in force. The use of hand sanitiser before and after playground use is recommended and, if you have capacity, wiping down equipment before and after play is advised.
