23.01.2022 Sad to hear the passing of one of my favourite drum teachers and one of the great "jazz" drummers, Jon Christensen, who pioneered the "open" style of playing, primarily with ECM records- spreading the groove between all the four limbs and de-emphasising the 2 & 4 on the hi hat, amongst other things. He will live on with his numerous milestone recordings, thanks Jon for your knowledge you passed down!!! :-) :-) :-)

19.01.2022 Hi friends and students, now that we all are stuck at home (or the studio), and for those who always ask me 'how' to play reggae, check out Carlton Barrett, one of my favourite Reggae drummers. Hoping to finish the Audio/Visual room set up soon at The Band Booth, so I can record/demonstrate some of these grooves (and lots other stuff!) and maybe online lessons till the 'isolation' ends. Bob Marley & The Wailers - Kink...y Reggae (Live at the Manhattan Transfer Show, 1975) Carlton "Carly" Barrett (17 December 1950 17 April 1987) was a Jamaican drummer and percussionist. His musical development in the early years was with his brother Aston "Family Man" Barrett as a member of Lee "Scratch" Perry's "house band" The Upsetters. The brothers joined Bob Marley and The Wailers around 1970. He co wrote the well known Bob Marley song "War" and with his brother Aston co-wrote "Talkin' Blues". Carlton Barrett is featured on all the albums recorded by the Wailers. Barrett popularised the one drop rhythm, a percussive drumming style created by Winston Grennan. With Carly's beats and his brother Aston's bass, the Wailer rhythm section planted the seeds of today's international reggae. See more

19.01.2022 Amazing... Roy Haynes, one of the all time great drummers, turns 95 this week, still playing!!! :-) :-) :-)

19.01.2022 Sending A Big "Thanks" to everyone who has liked/shared the page so far!!!, (and to Paul Cooper for the use of the room!) The students have been slowly coming in since the DrumsKool opened last December 2018 at the The Band Booth, and it has been a rewarding experience, teaching (and learning) once again. Having been lucky enough to study with some of the world's greatest Progressive Jazz and Rock Drummers, I'm glad to say that the information "passed on" to the younger and "...not so younger" drummers is genuine and beneficial. I was fortunate to spend a few days (thanks to Martin Jackson), studying with the amazing Adam Nussbaum when I was 18 years old (considered one of the finest drummers working today, who's played with a virtual "Who's Who" in the jazz world.) He showed me a heap of stuff including the rarely seen "figure 8" brush pattern used by Elvin Jones with John Coltrane on slow/medium tempos (which I'll demonstrate once the Audio/Visual set-up is ready),- this is an excerpt of some other fantastic up-tempo brushwork patterns from a true master, hope you enjoy!!! 18.01.2022 Hi friends and students, more of the reggae vibes!!!- song from Steel Pulse that may be appropriate for the current situation; "Chant a Psalm"- (Festival Glastonbury 2015), with drummer Wayne 'C#' Clarke- example of an uptempo "One-drop" groove or modern "Rock-steady" or "Ska" groove! (The official way to count reggae (4/4 versus cut time) remains a frequent debate. But thats all semanticsthe groove remains the same. Unlike most beats in popular Western music, the "One-drop" doesnt place a grounding accent on 1 and 3 (when counted as a slow 4/4). Instead, those beats are unaccented, and the strong beats are on 2 and 4 (or on 3 if youre counting twice as fast, as in cut time). Those strong beats are accented by the bass drum and commonly combined with rim-clicks. The effect is a funky, laidback, half-time feel.)

18.01.2022 Hey friends and drum students, during "April isolation".. Continuing with the Reggae theme/vibes!!!... Bob Marley-1979, "Running Away" & "Crazy Baldhead", Harvard Stadium-Boston. This is Carlton Barrett at his most complex. "Carlys infectious swing often straddled the nebulous cracks between straight-8th and triplet phrasing. This was pronounced in his hi-hat work. An especially influential innovation was his use of hihat tripletswhole and broken-up partialslaid across the beat, lending an African-like duple-against-triple tension. He applied that with a back-phrasing that leaned against the forward motion of the kit. Anchoring it all was his solid Field Marshal time. A strong example is heard on 'Crazy Baldhead'. - courtesy Modern Drummer Magazine

18.01.2022 Happy 80th Birthday to Ringo Starr!!

14.01.2022 Hi friends and students, continuing with the Reggae vibes; one of my favourite Reggae bands, Steel Pulse, with drummer Wayne 'C#' Clarke- a good example of a "Onedrop" groove (with a modern approach). Steel Pulse - "Your House", Santa Barbara, 2009 The official way to count reggae (4/4 versus cut time) remains a frequent debate. But thats all semanticsthe groove remains the same. Unlike most beats in popular Western music, the "Onedrop" doesnt place a grounding accent on 1 and 3 (when counted as a slow 4/4). Instead, those beats are unaccented, and the strong beats are on 2 and 4 (or on 3 if youre counting twice as fast, as in cut time). Those strong beats are accented by the bass drum and commonly combined with rimclicks. The effect is a funky, laidback, half-time feel.

14.01.2022 Here is an example of some Polyrythmic techniques we'll be covering in the lessons. Adam Nussbaum- Drums, Toots Thielemans- Harmonica, Fred Hersch- Piano, Harvie S- Bass: "All Blues"- Stuttgart- Germany- March 1987. This is one of my Drum teachers, Adam Nussbaum, in action- Advanced Students can take note of how a (fast) 3/4 has a 2 against 3 applied to it, implying a medium 4/4 swing (end of harmonica solo), and then later doubled-timed to give the "illusion" of a fast 4/4 ...(during piano and drum solo): (think of the 3/4 in terms of quarter note triplets over 4/4, although it's not!) Adam Nussbaum is considered one of the finest drummers working today. He's played with a virtual "Who's Who" in the jazz world. Longtime associates have included: John Abercrombie, Michael & Randy Brecker, Bob Brookmeyer, Eliane Elias, Gil Evans, Stan Getz, Vic Juris, James Moody, John Scofield, Joe Sample, Ohad Talmor, Toots Thielemans, Kenny Wheeler & NHØP, as well as freelancing with prominent artists of every generation, being a major asset no matter where he appears. In addition, Nussbaum reaches out to the next generation. He is an in-demand educator doing Clinics and Master Classes, teaching at such institutions as Berklee, NYU, State University of New York, the New School, and at numerous Conservatories around the world. His abilities have brought opportunities for him to work with the finest makers of all things drum-related. Working with Sonor drums, he helped design a line in the HiLite series. In conjunction with Zildjian cymbals, Nussbaum helped developed the Renaissance & "Pre-Aged K. Zildjian cymbals. He also co-produced with Hudson Music, "The Art of Playing Brushes." See more

11.01.2022 In memory of one of my great drum teachers, and one of the most subtle, but awesome "modern jazz" drummers- Jon Christensen, who unfortunately passed away a few days ago.....i was lucky enough to spend a couple of days, one on one and in master class with him in 1981 during a Summer jazz clinic, organised by Martin Jackson, here with Sonny Rollins, 1971! :-) Enjoy!!!....

08.01.2022 Tribute to Jimmy Cobb, an absolute legend, swingin' till he was 91!!! Jimmy Cobb (drums), Paul Chambers (bass), John Coltrane (sax), Stan Getz (sax), Oscar Peterson (piano), - "Hackensack". Recorded in Germany 1960. Wilbur James Cobb (January 20, 1929 May 24, 2020) was an American jazz drummer. Cobb started his touring career in 1950 with the saxophonist Earl Bostic. He was part of Miles Davis's First Great Sextet. Cobb joined Miles Davis in 1957 as part of the latter's Fir...st Great Sextet, after saxophonist Cannonball Adderley recommended him to Davis. Cobb's best known recorded work is on Davis' Kind of Blue (1959). Cobb was the last surviving player from the sessions, a distinction he held for just under the last three decades of his life. He also played on other Davis albums, including Sketches of Spain (1960), Someday My Prince Will Come (1961), Miles Davis at Carnegie Hall (1962), In Person Friday and Saturday Nights at the Blackhawk, Complete, and briefly on Porgy and Bess (1959) and Sorcerer. His subtle and understated demeanor drew the admiration of many including Davis. However, this also meant that he did not get the same level of recognition that his fellow drummers would. Cobb had the propensity to eschew publicity and did not record his first set as bandleader until 1983, with the release of So Nobody Else Can Hear. During his career, Cobb worked with Bill Evans, Clark Terry, Stan Getz, John Coltrane, Wes Montgomery, Art Pepper, Wayne Shorter, Benny Golson, Gil Evans, Kenny Dorham, Frank Strozier, Bobby Timmons, Booker Little, Johnny Griffin, Akiko Tsuruga, Bertha Hope, Hamiet Bluiett, Nat Adderley, Mark Murphy, Jon Hendricks, Joe Henderson, Fathead Newman, Geri Allen, Larry Willis, Walter Booker, Red Garland, Richie Cole, Ernie Royal, Jerome Richardson, Jimmy Cleveland, Philly Joe Jones, Sonny Stitt, Nancy Wilson, Ricky Ford, Richard Wyands, John Webber, and Peter Bernstein, among many others. 04.01.2022 Happy 81st Birthday to James Gadson! Beginning his career in the late 1960s, Gadson has since become one of the most-recorded drummers in the history of R&B. He... is also a singer and songwriter. From 1972, James Gadson serves up a tasty 16th-note groove, along with Bill Withers, his primary employer in the early part of the decade (the song they're playing is When Im Kissin My Love). Have you ever seen James perform live?
