24.01.2022 Tomorrow I will have the pleasure of chatting on Instagram live with Leah Cummins. 2pm Brisbane time, 26th Jan. Leah will be sharing her experiences as an Indigenous Australian Woman and what the 26th January means to her. Educating ourselves about the experiences of others and recognising the multitude of perspectives that exist to create a nation is the starting blocks to creating true inclusion. As people of this beautiful land we have an obligation to understand its hist...ory and how this impacts our present. Without doing that, how can we ever move forward together? So please take time to listen to others with an empathetic ear and seek out knowledge. A good place to start is australianstogether.org.au

24.01.2022 What if you no longer had those limiting beliefs? No more self doubts? Tell me, what would you do? What would be different?

24.01.2022 Beth Moresi @bethbuilds is joining me for a chat this week! Super excited to speak with Beth as her energy and positive vibes online are infectious! Were aiming for Tuesday morning but depending on what the Victorian corona lockdown brings, we might need to swap to another day. Ill keep you updated on the insta stories with changes if required.

23.01.2022 WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY TO YOURSELF? Our self-talk (or internal dialogue) affects so much of our mood, outlook and resilience. I hope you speak to yourself with kindness and love. ... Why not make speaking positively to yourself a priority this week?

23.01.2022 A lot has been written about women and confidence. Weve been told to "lean in", fake-it-till-you-make-it and stop being so "nice". A BCW survey found that 47% of female respondents felt completely confident in their abilities, 10% had very low levels of confidence and the remaining 43% had fluctuating confidence levels. If youre in the fluctuating camp, here are some of our top tips for helping you to up your confidence factor.

21.01.2022 Are you ready to take control of your career success? Want to level-up your skills to achieve higher performance? Or do you simply want to overcome those challenges that have been holding you back? Well, The BCW Online Learning Community is here to help you reach your career goals. Im so excited to share this workshop, which Ive previously delivered to hundreds of leaders face-to-face, now through an online format. Ive been wanting to deliver my workshops online for many y...ears and now is the perfect time. Even in times of isolation and uncertainty we can still find little ways to connect and take control of our careers #thankstechnology This workshop is the first course of a much larger BCW online learning program. I absolutely love the content of this workshop and have personally used it in my own coaching and consulting work. The model Im going to share with you is something I was lucky enough to learn early in my career and it was a game changer for how I learnt to deal with other people - especially those aggressive types!! The course will go live on the 11th September and can be completed anytime that suits your busy lifestyle after that. For more info, head to https://www.thebcw.com.au/10minuteframeworkforbuildingrelat And if you know of anyone else who would get value out of this course, please tag them below. 21.01.2022 Flashback to when Fridays meant fly-out day!! Is there any greater feeling!!?! Hope you all have a great weekend ahead! Even if youre working, I hope its productive and fun!!

21.01.2022 I spent a lot of time trying really hard not to be who I am... not be girly, not be this or that. - Beth Moresi @bethbuilds This statement from Beth during our chat yesterday really hit home with me (check out my IGTV to see the entire interview). Early in my career, I was very conscious of not being too girly at work. It was almost like I didnt want to draw attention to the fact I was female. I wanted to fit in, to be taken seriously for my work and output. To not receiv...e comments like is that a new jumper, looks like your little sisters, youre pretty tough for a girl, are you here to take the notes love, or my favourite who brought the lube? (all true stories). This was especially true when I joined a new team or started on a new site. Once Id been on site for a while and felt like Id been accepted into the team and respected for my skills, I felt more comfortable bringing out my more girly side. At the time I didnt know any other way to act. It was a coping strategy of being a minority. However, on reflection I can see the negative repercussions this strategy had on myself; - I wasnt being my authentic self, which is stressful in of itself. - It was doing nothing to challenge the culture to be more supportive of difference - I think I became more aggressive and abrupt because I was always on guard and trying to act a certain way As Ive grown in my career Ive tried to bring my authentic self, even when starting on a new site. But I will admit this is still sometimes uncomfortable when the environment is very heavily masculine. Nonetheless, this is something I am personally trying to do. To challenge myself to get comfortable showing the strength of femininity, even when the environment cant see it... yet Im curious, does anyone else relate?

17.01.2022 I met Beck after chasing her down a Brisbane street. I saw her striding along in her PPE, full brim hat, carrying a clip board. There was something about the way she carried herself that made me think Project Manager. Turns out, thats exactly what she is; a Project Manager, but not with the traditional background you might think. ... Join us tomorrow on BCW Instagram live TV to find out more about Becks career journey.

16.01.2022 Nyssa, this ones for you. Was popped into the post this morning. Thanks to everyone who continues to support this book. Im so glad its still bringing you value

16.01.2022 Sending these over to Canada for our competition winner @lbettz . Hope they dont take too long to arrive I cant believe The BCW book is 4 years old. Do you think its improving?

15.01.2022 Sometimes youve just got to set your own path.

15.01.2022 I used to work in a really aggressive workplace. There were threats of physical violence, verbal intimidation, standover tactics and lots of shouting. My stress levels were constantly up in response and I too felt myself becoming more aggressive just to cope. ... My relationships suffered. My health suffered. My peace of mind suffered. Then I began to realise the reasons why some people were so aggressive. I learnt tactics for responding to their aggression and ways to defuse it. I also gained perspective on my own behaviour so I could learn ways for coping with this environment. In the coming days Im going to be sharing the tool that helped me understand aggressive types of people. If you want to make sure youre the first to know about this upcoming release (and get onboard the early bird special) drop me a DM with your email. Xx

15.01.2022 Sarah needs our help... Im an architect at fjmt studio, and recipient of the NAWIC International Womens Day Scholarship for 2020. Like many of us, I am very concerned about climate change, and the action required to limit global warming before the effects become irreversible. Working in the construction industry, our environmental impact is major. Collectively, we need to take action, in the most effective ways possible.... Ive been inspired by many female leaders in the field, which made me think - how does the representation of women in leadership roles in sustainability compare to the broader construction industry, one of the most male dominated industries in Australia? My research aims to explore participation and representation in environmental sustainability leadership, with an aim to support the development of diverse leadership and effective sustainability outcomes, as well as learning from those female leaders in the field. This week, Ive launched the Diversity of Environmental Leadership in Construction and Im looking for participants who work in sustainability related roles in the built environment, including architects, ESD consultants, environmental managers, engineers, developers, suppliers, etc really anyone in the industry who is passionate about sustainability. Please get involved! Link to complete the survey is below or can be found in The BCW bio. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/div-sust-lead-IR

14.01.2022 How do you improve learning outcomes for female STEM students? My guest tomorrow is Britt Furlanis and she is working on this exact challenge. Britt has worked in the energy and oil & gas industries for close to 10 years. She is also part of the team about to launch Gojji - a cloud based software for graduate development programs. ... Tune in to The BCW Instagram Live story tomorrow at 12 noon (Brisbane, Australia) to find out more!

14.01.2022 Create your own definition of success. Sure, its good to listen to the advice and perspectives of others, but it doesnt mean you have to take them on board.

12.01.2022 Knowledge gives choice. When I talk about rules I dont mean whats right or wrong. Im referring to the predictable behavioural patterns of people. Understanding what makes someone tick or how theyre going to behave or even how a situation is going to unfold, is so powerful because once you know this, you then have the opportunity to influence. To change the course and control the situation. You get to choose how you want to play the game.

12.01.2022 Ever wanted to know about Industrial Relations and Human Resources in the Construction Industry? This week on Industry Chat Tuesday, I’ll be speaking with Jo Whatley, Director of Sangha People Solutions to understand this side of construction. Jo has extensive experience that has spanned over 10 years across a number of large scale multidisciplinary civil and rail infrastructure projects in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria including the Airport Link Northern Busway ($...4.3b), the Victorian Desalination Plant ($4b), the Country Regional Network ($1.5b) Sydney Metro NorthWest ($3.7b, the Woolgoolga to Ballina Pacific Highway Upgrade Project ($4.3b) and WestConnex M4-M5 Link Tunnels Project. Jo has some impressive experience and I can’t wait to unpack this all tomorrow at 1pm QLD time. Please see story post for your Timezone conversion and saving a reminder of our live chat.

11.01.2022 Im not talking about your bank balance, how big your home is, or your fancy job title. Im referring to that deep sense of satisfaction you get when you have found something you love. When you spend your days doing the things that give you joy, that make your heart full and content. However this sometimes means we have to do a trade off. Time spent studying rather than with friends or family. A drop in pay for a complete career change. Moving locations for a new job.... Each of these trade-offs take great courage. To back yourself and your choices. So what are you willing to sacrifice to achieve your own version of success? Or what have you already done to grow towards your dream? Id love to hear about it

10.01.2022 This week Im chatting with Danielle Savio, Project Manager and Editor at @gazella_blog . Danielle is a powerful woman who remains authentic to herself whilst leading the way in the construction industry. A true role model who is passionate about showcasing the diversity of women in her industry.

09.01.2022 This one was sent to me by my partner in crime (aka life) and whilst Im sure he had family in mind, it makes me think about the sisterhood in the heavy industries #womensupportingwomen We have come so far because we have worked together, advocated, supported, endorsed, commiserated and celebrated together! I know youre all bloody amazing in your own rights, but imagine what more we can do together!... Spread the love by letting your woman squad know how much you appreciate them (tag in the comments below).

09.01.2022 Mel is an amazing tradeswoman and Mum. I met her about 3-4 years ago when working in the renewables sector. Tomorrow were going to talk about her initiative @ladytradiesandrockingchicks and how she balances mum life with work. Ill be taking notes on how she does it with two kiddies under three years of age!

08.01.2022 Whenever we find ourselves in disagreement, frustration or judgement of another person we can never feel empathy for them. This quote from Stephen Covey (author of renowned book 7 Habits of Highly Effective People) sums it up beautifully ... When you show deep empathy towards others, their defensive energy goes down, and their positive energy replaces it. That’s when you can get more creative in solving problems.... Is there someone in your life who could do with a little more empathy from you? Why not try really listening to them, without assumptions or defensiveness. You’ll be amazed to see how it completely changes their energy and opens possibilities. #empathy #listen #coaching

08.01.2022 Do you feel like your every move, behaviour or sentence is watched and scrutinised? This is something I hear time and time again from women in the heavy industry. One of the realities of being a minority is that you stand out. Rather than see this as a challenge, lets reframe it into a positive. It means you have the ability to create a lasting impact. So why not make the most of this by blowing them away with your amazing personality!! ... And if you want to up your relationship game by impressing everyone you meet - yep, even that grumpy ol bastard whos a tough nut to crack - come join me in the online workshop 10 Minute Framework For Building Relationships of Influence. Early bird price of $39 is valid until 31st August. Normal price is $149. https://www.thebcw.com.au/10minuteframeworkforbuildingrelat

08.01.2022 You cant be everyones cup of tea right? WRONG! Especially if you: - run your own business - have clients or customers youve got to satisfy... - rely on others to deliver aspects of your role responsibilities - want good performance reviews from your managers - care about your career projection Now Im not saying you have to be best friends with everyone, but you do need to figure out a way to have a positive working relationship. In this short course Im going to share with you the #1 tool I use to quickly form positive relationships with all types of people. Ive applied this to over 500 different coaching clients and taught this model to hundreds of leaders, engineers, safety professionals and STEM university students. Currently Im offering a HUGE 74% discount off the normal price, but only until 31st of August. Head to the below link to sign up for this offer before its gone. https://www.thebcw.com.au/10minuteframeworkforbuildingrelat

06.01.2022 Queenie Ambatali is my guest for tomorrows chat. Shell be sharing her experience as a young woman of colour in engineering and what organisations and leaders can do to create an environment where everyone is welcomed to be their authentic self. Ive been wanting to chat with @queeniea for a while, so am very pumped to have 15mins of her time tomorrow. See you on Instagram live at 10am tomorrow, Brisbane time, or catch up on the recording at The BCW IGTV channel.

05.01.2022 YOU ARE MAKING AN IMPACT. Everything we do creates an impression around us. - you could be part of building a great culture in your team. - you could be inspiring other women to join the heavy industries. - you could be challenging the thats the way weve always done things mindset with your different perspectives. ... - you could be making a colleagues day with your humour or kindness. - you could be challenging someones mindset with your professionalism, capability, or quick wit. Big or small, it doesnt matter. Everything we do leaves an impression and has the power to create change. So what impact have you left this week and what do you want it to be next week? You get to choose. Happy Friday! See more

04.01.2022 Im great at the technical stuff, but want to improve my people skills she said. This is a comment I constantly hear in the heavy industries! At trade school they teach you the hands-on techniques. In an engineering degree they teach you the concepts and processes to design. But they dont teach you the most fundamental of all skills... how to work with humans (and all the crazy variability they bring). This is truly nuts, because unless you are a solo designer, locked away... in a dark room with no human interaction... youre going to need to know how to communicate effectively with others, navigate conflict, manage different emotions and work as a team towards a goal. The BCW is all about supporting people in operational environments (ie mining, construction, engineering, manufacturing, etc) to be their best. Thats why Ive been putting together online workshops with the key skills for levelling-up your career in the heavy industries. In the coming days Ill be releasing the first workshop which contains my #1 favourite tool for building relationships and understanding the behaviour of others (including the aggressive types). Ive used this with over 500 leaders in the heavy industry and it is by far the most powerful, yet simple model for understanding others. If you want to make sure youre the first to know about the early bird offer for this course, drop me a DM with your email. Have a great day

04.01.2022 Sonia, this one’s for you! A copy of my book, Rules of the Game: Women in the Masculine Industries, is heading across the country today Rules of the Game is a resource for women working in the masculine industries. Sharing real world stories, advice and research into the experiences of women in the workforce. I wrote it over 4 years ago and whilst so much good progress has been made, there are still some workplaces (or people) stuck in the dark ages. Link in bio to grab yo...ur own copy. . . . . #WomenPower #womeninpower #womeninenergy #GirlBoss #womeninconstruction #facesofmining #fifo #fifolife #womeninengineering #womeninmining #womeninenergy #womenintrades #ladytradie #renewables #mining #tradie #engineering #engineer #construction #equality #diversity #genderdiversity #womensupportingwomen #boss #leader #australia #rulesofthegame #thebcw

04.01.2022 Want to learn the #1 tool Ive used to build fast and effective relationships with hundreds of leaders across the heavy industries? As the youngest leadership coach in these operational environments I found this tool to be instrumental in building a solid reputation and influencing blokes twice my age. Ill be sharing this tool in The BCW online course, 10 Minute Framework for Building Relationships of Influence.... Normally priced at $149, Im offering early bird registrations for only $39. But only until 31st August!! Sign up via link http://www.thebcw.com.au/10minuteframeworkforbuildingrelati

03.01.2022 No matter how long it takes, keep grinding until you make yourself damn proud!!

03.01.2022 Today is the #internationaldayofwomenandgirlsinscience . The 6th International Day of Women and Girls in Science Assembly theme will be Beyond the Borders: Equality in Science for Society, with a special focus on the value of the social aspects and cultural dimensions in Science, Technology and Innovation to enhance sustainable development programmes. Over the past 15 years, the global community has made a lot of effort in inspiring and engaging women and girls in science. Ye...t women and girls continue to be excluded from participating fully in science. At present, less than 30 per cent of researchers worldwide are women. According to UNESCO data (2014 - 2016), only around 30 per cent of all female students select STEM-related fields in higher education. Globally, female students’ enrolment is particularly low in ICT (3 per cent), natural science, mathematics and statistics (5 per cent) and in engineering, manufacturing and construction (8 per cent). Long-standing biases and gender stereotypes are steering girls and women away from science related fields. As in the real world, the world on screen reflects similar biasesthe 2015 Gender Bias Without Borders study by the Geena Davis Institute showed that of the onscreen characters with an identifiable STEM job, only 12 per cent were women. So how can you help? Start by having conversations with any teachers, students, children and parents about what today means. Create opportunities to highlight the women you know who already work in science and the impacts they’re making. And if you know any female uni students studying a science, technology, engineering, arts or mathematics subject, encourage them to apply for free programs like the @dream.big.australia STEAM Ahead program.

02.01.2022 Do you know how to ask someone R U OK? Here are some tips to help you have one of the most important conversations you can ever have with another person.

02.01.2022 Hands up if your life to date has turned out exactly as you planned? Firstly, if your hand is up Im guessing youve been under a rock for all of 2020! Secondly, if your hand is down then youre in good company. ... When youre little you have this idea of what your life will look like. But then life speeds along and it takes different twists and turns that end you up somewhere different than you imagined. But this doesnt have to be a bad thing. After my chat with @britt.furlanis last week on #smokochattuesday I was reflecting about the pressure teenagers feel to make decisions about their life path, before theyve even really experienced life. Thats why I love the idea of the Gojii App she discussed. But I think its also important we share our stories with younger generations so they expand their understanding of whats possible and to find comfort in the knowledge that what they set out to do at 18 probably wont be the same as what theyre actually doing when theyre 30 or 40. Instead we could be emphasising the skills of resilience, managing change, setting goals and a love of life long learning. As for me, I thought I was going to be a vet, then a nutritionist, then a psychologist and then some world travelling business woman. But then I turned out to be something that doesnt even have a proper title... A strategy and leadership coach, consultant, diversity and inclusion specialist, entrepreneur and not for profit founder who works in the mining, construction and engineering industries. Thats a bloody long job title. Id love to know what you all thought you wanted to be when you were 15 years old and what your actual job title is now.... hit up the comments below...

02.01.2022 WOMENS BODIES ARE AMAZING! Its coming to the end of World Breastfeeding Week and I wanted to share some pics of mine and babys journey with the boobies whilst flying and working on site. Its been 21months for us and this kid doesnt look like shell be quitting any time soon no ones ever met a 5 year old whos still on the boob have they??? Theres lots of nice quotes floating around about boobie milk. But this one caught my attention because it rings true in every sen...se. This one is not just for the breastfeeding mammas, but also for every woman who uses her physicality to chase her dreams! Whether its from an exhausting day on the tools, a long day digging or driving, navigating across construction sites or hitting the gym after work, our powerful bodies enable us to do this. Our worth is so much more than what our body looks like - lets focus on what it can do. That is so much more fucking powerful! See more
