25.01.2022 At Designful weve been thinking about shacks. Most of us have had positive experiences with shacks, those weekender sheds and the like, whether you are renting... one for the weekend or you are lucky enough to own one. For most people it is an escape, a retreat from modern day life, an important breath of fresh air from the fast pace of life. But weve started to wonder, what is it about shacks and retreats that make us feel so regenerated? There are many possible aspects, the act of travelling somewhere different, the shift in environment, the weather. But we think there is also something else, its a place where we allow ourselves to relax, a place where we allow ourselves to not get too distracted by technology and reconnect with our environment. We go fishing, we read a book on the deck, we have barbecues, we have campfires at night or we even do absolutely nothing. Its simple living at its best. So why is it that our homes cant empower us to live this way? Why do we have to get away from our homes to relax? There could be many reasons, but perhaps part of it is that our homes are too complex. No matter who you are, most of us on every other weekend spend our time organising the house, cleaning or clearing out the garage or the spare room. All that simple life goodness of the shack can sometimes get easily lost. Our ability to tolerate imperfection and happily making do gets suspended once we lock the door of the shack and drive away. Why is that? Perhaps we need to recognise that there are values in shack design that we should be including in our homes. Things like smaller kitchens, one bathroom, just enough space that we can all fit but it takes less than 15 minutes to vacuum the house! There are many complex aspects to our lives, perhaps our homes shouldnt be one of them. #enoughoverexcess #designful #smallhomes #designfulstudio See more

20.01.2022 Are you after a well designed building, without the custom design fees? Something small and humble, but thoroughly thought out, and lets be honest: beautifu...l. (See our stories for a walkthrough of one of our favourite small buildings @coalvalleystudio!) Perhaps a pre-designed small home or building would work for you? Well we do that too! Were so excited to formally introduce you to HOMEFUL. Our pre-designed HOMEFUL homes are: stress-free, flexible, cost effective, and have reduced time-frames. They have been designed with environmental impact, affordability, enoughness, and user well-being front of mind. Pop one in your backyard, have the grandparents move in, rent it to a friend, or use it as a teenagers (or parents!) retreat. OR buy a block of land with friends and build multiple! We believe communal living and land sharing is the future, and we love clients who come up with creative uses for their land. (If youre after something bigger, we have 1 and 2 bedroom options as well.) Pop over to @homefulbydesignful for more info on our pre-designed, pre-thought-out, pre-priced options. #enoughness #humble #connection #stressfree #dreamlifestyle #userwellbeing See more

19.01.2022 I think I need a bigger van!!

18.01.2022 We've had a number of recent requests to provide retrospective building permits for illegal buildings on recently-bought properties. Unfortunately, our powers a...re rather limited in this regard and what's usually needed is the services of a building designer, an engineer, quite often some tradies, possibly a builder, and then a building surveyor, and finally the council. All with their own fees and time availabilities so there's very little chance it can be done cheaply let along by next Thursday. Which usually leaves the new owner feeling somewhat crushed and us feeling like ogres. Luckily, you can find out before you buy whether there's illegal building work on a property by getting a Form 51 Building Certificate from the council. A Form 51 requires the council to reconcile what's on site with what's on record and confirms they won't be taking enforcement action. If they find there is illegal building work on the property, then you can use this to negotiate a buying price that covers the costs of retrospective approval. 17.01.2022 For a long time now I've wanted to have a go at milling timber. Now I get my chance on my own block of land in franklin. If anyone is interested in checking out how it all works send me a message and you can come down and have a look. We should start with the mill in a few weeks.

17.01.2022 At Designful, each week in these posts we tend to impress the importance of always questioning ourselves. We find that when designing a future space, this proce...ss of questioning can lead to a greater and more holistic result. But keeping this in mind, let me ask you, do you know what you want for breakfast next week? Do you know if you are going to buy a few new jumpers next winter? Do you know if your family will come to stay unexpectedly in the next few years? Do you know if youll ever get another pet? Do you know what your kids new hobby will be in three years from now? Now these questions might seem ridiculous, and they are! Im pretty sure none of us can see into the future! When designing a home there are various ways we at Designful can design in anticipation of certain possible variables, perhaps having kids, beginning to work from home, going into retirement, etc. This is an important part of our design process, designing a home to function both now and in the future. But weve been thinking about these grey areas, these functions that a Home provides that arent so obvious, these questions from before that none of us can anticipate the answer. When designing a home we find that if we try and anticipate every single possible function a house could provide, this is where the square meterage of a house tends to blow out and building costs can go up. So how do you design for these grey area functions so many years down the track that you might have to deal with or you might not, how do you design for this? .... Maybe you dont. As the average Australian house size gets bigger and bigger, maybe we should ask ourselves why there is a slight fear of having to make do. More space isnt necessarily the answer, clever space is. #designfulstudio #designfulteam #smallhouse #sustainableliving See more
