24.01.2022 Love the way swarms draw comb so fast. Here she is the culprit is a green marked girl which narrows down the possible hives she could’ve come from to nine out of ninety.

24.01.2022 Do you have Curious bees or bees that prefer consistency . Interesting reading.

23.01.2022 Bee people, I haven’t watched this but sure we will learn something interesting . Let me know if you have?

22.01.2022 Tocal Virtual Field Day is this saturday, looks like a great line up. Looking forward to a break from apiary work. Please beehave bees - no swarming.

20.01.2022 The biggest movement of livestock in Australia is happening now with 227,000 beehives heading to our Almond orchards for the annual pollination. Even Covid wont stop our essential pollinators!

20.01.2022 If you get a chance take a local at the Tocal Virtual Field Day presentations available on you tube. Some very interesting presentations on pheromones, worker bee roles and Adrian’s best practice nucleus hives. https://youtu.be/jA-L6Nusx6s

19.01.2022 Macadamia or Brazilian Cherry ? The bees are enjoying a spring banquet, hope yours are too. Seems the Brazilian cherry is the favourite today.

19.01.2022 Plan Bee differs from past breeding programs in a number of ways. One of them is that queen breeders will be able to use the tools on their own stock, selecting for the traits that are important to them and their customers. Read more https://bit.ly/3h6gBhl

18.01.2022 Here’s something a little more cheerful than poisoned bees. I lifted some brood a couple of weeks ago to start pre season preparation of cell builders and trapped some drones above the excluder. Here they are finding their wings and taking first flights.

17.01.2022 So after the worst year imaginable, some *%%%$$! Tries to steal a couple of breeders last night. They didnt make it out of the paddock, hope the bees got them good. Who would stoop so low, seemed to know what they were aiming for.

16.01.2022 Queen introduction looking good. The behaviour of these bees tells me they are going to readily accept this new queen. They are buzzing about excitedly and spreading her scent around , in a couple of days she will be out laying ready for spring.

15.01.2022 The days are getting warmer, nice to see good populations and happy bees bringing in nectar.

15.01.2022 I cant make up my mind, should I keep her or should I sell her? With over 70 breeders in the apiary, its time to make some decisions so I have room to fit the new season inseminated queens.

13.01.2022 Ok, I think that just about tops everything ;a snake got into my extracting room. Lost it and thought it had gone but opened the lid on the wax melter and found it snuggled up inside. Worse, did a bad job of snake wrangling and to escape the stupid women with the broom it crawled into the water jacket. Wax melter spent the night and most of today upended in the paddock, hope it slithered out. I’m turning it on tomorrow.

12.01.2022 Nice size swarm landed in the mangoes at lunch today. Good to see them strong enough to swarm. Was able to fit the ute under the tree and just drop them in a box on the back of the ute. Hope they are all this easy bit rusty with my swarm catching .

11.01.2022 Nice big queen. Ive been doing this for a few years now. Should be a great season for insemination , Ive got the first virgins hatched ready to go, itching to try out my new microscope.

10.01.2022 Busy day at the feeding station. Always find bees need a protein boost at this time of year.

06.01.2022 Time for some wet weather.

05.01.2022 One thing for sure with bees no matter what’s on your job list for the day guaranteed you will end up doing something else. Went to move any empty box I had transferred bees out of on 22nd October. Maybe the queen was left behind .

05.01.2022 And this little baby swarm makes 10 so far for the season. Pulled the queen out of it , she’s not marked and doesn’t look anything like any of my stock.

02.01.2022 Only two colonies hanging out their boxes , don’t have ventilated bases only lids.

01.01.2022 Young bees washboarding, this is what they do when there is an abundance (excess ) and they are still too young to gather nectar. Left and right colonies of a three way mating Nuc washboarding in unison.
