25.01.2022 Those sheep should be way, way more afraid. Twist: We are the sheep.

24.01.2022 Headline may be considered clickbait because there is a long way to go before this can be properly implemented with a neural interface to successfully connect their artificial eye to the brain. This interface will need real-time read (signals to move the eye in its socket) and write (upload of vision to the brain) capability. Nonetheless, this is quite a jump in artificial eye technology and is worth taking note of! "The human eye owes its wide field of view and high-resoluti...on eyesight to the dome-shaped retina an area at the back of the eyeball covered in light-detecting cells. Fan and colleagues used a curved aluminum oxide membrane, studded with nanosize sensors made of a light-sensitive material called a perovskite, to mimic that architecture in their synthetic eyeball. Wires attached to the artificial retina send readouts from those sensors to external circuitry for processing, just as nerve fibers relay signals from a real eyeball to the brain." Feel free to post theories of how the brain would interpret this signal if it was just fed right into the optical nerve. I'm also going to include all the random questions that pop into my head when I see stories about artificial vision. Would it look like real vision? Would someone blind from birth know the difference or even care to know the difference? Would you replace one or both of your eyes if it offered the potential to see in a wider spectrum of EM radiation? Could this be the way to get an IRL HUD? What about a third eye? Would that be better? Where would you put it? Can I link it to security cameras? Can it be hacked and viewed remotely? Is there any way to prevent it being hacked and viewed remotely? ...

23.01.2022 "Researchers in Australia have achieved a world record internet speed of 44.2 terabits per second, allowing users to download 1,000 HD movies in a single second. A team from Monash, Swinburne and RMIT universities used a micro-comb optical chip containing hundreds of infrared lasers to transfer data across existing communications infrastructure in Melbourne." Australia, inventors of wifi and now this revolutionary technology. Bit of an oxymoron that we still can't get fast internet out to the bush, finding ourselves at rank 64 for broadband speed.

22.01.2022 A bonus episode for our buffer mixing tutorial. Come watch me risk my life playing with the spookiest salts. FUCK. Guanidine Thiocyanate. I really did take two showers after making this buffer.

21.01.2022 When we can truly understand it, we can beat it.

17.01.2022 DEVELOPMENT UPDATE; PLASTIC MACHINE GO BRRRR Huge shoutout to community member Dylan Russell who saved me a ton of work over the weekend by sending over the protein sequences for the wild type enzyme, as well as the three best performing mutation sets. I've chosen one of these sets to work with for now (purely due to financial reasons), which was the best performing enzyme on the paper. The three mutations from the wild type are all at the back end of the protein. The offici...Continue reading

08.01.2022 Haha biomass machine go brrrr...

04.01.2022 I was genuinely surprised to learn that some of my friends raised in cities don't recognise or know about this smell. Even through the concrete and the fumes, I can still smell the actinomycetes <3

04.01.2022 Surely one of these things can purify insulin? Edit: Not the Biorad one, it just exploded. Probs a consequence of years in a damp garage.

01.01.2022 "After two years of the work of 20 scientists, we obtained this incredible enzyme able to deconstruct 90 percent of PET in less than 10 hours, Marty told Forbes... They used the modified enzyme to break down a tonne of waste plastic bottles, which were 90% degraded within 10 hours." BRB, Tracking down that gene sequence.

01.01.2022 Our friends in Nairobi also have a community biotech lab, which we helped out last year with an old thermal cycler. Go give their page a like, help encourage these guys as they educate the next generation of Kenyan Synthetic Biologists! Rather expensive shipping sponsored by Argent Scientific <3
