24.01.2022 Headline may be considered clickbait because there is a long way to go before this can be properly implemented with a neural interface to successfully connect their artificial eye to the brain. This interface will need real-time read (signals to move the eye in its socket) and write (upload of vision to the brain) capability. Nonetheless, this is quite a jump in artificial eye technology and is worth taking note of! "The human eye owes its wide field of view and high-resoluti...on eyesight to the dome-shaped retina an area at the back of the eyeball covered in light-detecting cells. Fan and colleagues used a curved aluminum oxide membrane, studded with nanosize sensors made of a light-sensitive material called a perovskite, to mimic that architecture in their synthetic eyeball. Wires attached to the artificial retina send readouts from those sensors to external circuitry for processing, just as nerve fibers relay signals from a real eyeball to the brain." Feel free to post theories of how the brain would interpret this signal if it was just fed right into the optical nerve. I'm also going to include all the random questions that pop into my head when I see stories about artificial vision. Would it look like real vision? Would someone blind from birth know the difference or even care to know the difference? Would you replace one or both of your eyes if it offered the potential to see in a wider spectrum of EM radiation? Could this be the way to get an IRL HUD? What about a third eye? Would that be better? Where would you put it? Can I link it to security cameras? Can it be hacked and viewed remotely? Is there any way to prevent it being hacked and viewed remotely? ...
