25.01.2022 2IC Boss #Bookseller and resident Gourmet Home Chef, Tony, points out that #summerreading doesn't have to be all about beach reads, thrillers and and romance novels... sometimes it's also about serious philosophical examination. Tony is a big fan of The Gourmet Farmer's #cookbooks, and he's been enjoying Matthew Evans's discussion on the ethics of meat eating.

24.01.2022 Do you have a city friend hankering for a country lifestyle? It's possible to have the best of both worlds, as the lovely Ainslee Costa shows. Her gorgeous profile @mysuburbanfarm provides #countryliving inspiration to thousands of followers - and we're delighted to see her #styleinspiration in book form.

21.01.2022 Lots of buzz around We Are Wolves, by #australianauthor @katrina_nannestad . It is already flying off our shelves and bookseller Shannon has earmarked it as her next read! When the Russian Army marches into East Prussia at the end of the war, the Wolf family must flee. Liesl, Otto and their baby sister Mia find themselves lost and alone, in a blizzard, in the middle of a war zone. Liesl has promised Mama that she will keep her brother and sister safe.... But sometimes, to survive, you have to do bad things. Dangerous things. Wild things. Sometimes to survive, you must become a wolf. From the Publisher: "Bestselling author Katrina Nannestad returns with her most masterful novel yet - a book to crack open your heart, a book to light you up inside, a book to love.

21.01.2022 We just adore Sing Me the Summer, brought to us by author/illustrator duo Jane Godwin and Alison Lester. Together they have created this gorgeous picture book, a joyous celebration of the seasons. From the Publisher: "Splash into summer with this glorious love letter to the seasons. Combining Jane Godwin's sparkling text and Alison Lester's whimsical watercolours, Sing Me the Summer celebrates those precious everyday moments that stay with us forever."

17.01.2022 It is time for another exciting YA #newreleasestack ! Sooo many new books... where would you start?? Maybe check out The Left Handed Booksellers of London? Imagine an alternate London where Librarians are authorised to kill... and sell books. ... From the publisher: " In this pulse-pounding and laugh-out-loud expedition to the world of magical booksellers, Garth Nix crafts a unique fantasy that blurs the boundaries between reality and mythic legend. " #loveozya Bookseller Shannon is #currentlyreading None Shall Sleep and tells us that it is a terrifyingly captivating physiological thriller. Follow Emma and Travis as they are recruited into the FBI to interview and collect information on juvenile killers... Pop in store to explore the endless new releases that have been hitting our #yashelves lately.

15.01.2022 Looking remarkably fresh and happy after a week of filming, signing, media interviews and celebrating, it was great to have sisters and authors Kate Forsyth and Belinda Murrell drop in to say hello. For the first time these fabulous Australian authors have collaborated to write Searching for Charlotte, a book that is set right here in the Southern Highlands. It is the story , part memoir, part biography, of Charlotte Atkinson , the first writer of children’s books in Australia. The local connection is she was a pioneer settler of Sutton Forest, and lived in the beautiful colonial property Oldbury. Both Kate and Belinda kindly signed copies for you, dear readers.

15.01.2022 Bernhard Schlink's book The Reader was one of the most moving we've ever ready. It was translated into 45 languages, adapted for film starring Kate Winslet, and is essential reading for students of German literature. Since then, Schlink has published several acclaimed novels; Olga is his latest. From the blurb: "Olga is an orphan raised by her grandmother in a Prussian village around the turn of the 20th century. Smart and precocious, she fights against the prejudices of the ...time to find her place in a world that sees her as second-best. When she falls in love with Herbert, a local aristocrat obsessed with the era's dreams of power, glory and greatness, her life is irremediably changed. Theirs is a love against all odds, entwined with the twisting paths of German history, leading us from the late 19th to the early 21st century, from Germany to Africa and the Arctic, from the Baltic Sea to the German south-west. This is the story of that love, of Olga's devotion to a restless man - told in thought, letters and in a fateful moment of great rebellion." See more

15.01.2022 It’s too wet for even the hardiest of bushwallkers .....but a perfect day to spend with The Ways of the Bushwalker. Newly updated, it’s a fascinating history of being on foot in Australia, exploring how bushwalking became a popular way of engaging with the bush, from the more genteel strolls of the early colonists to the proliferation of walking clubs and serious long-distance hiking, and the role bushwalkers played in conservation and the creation of national parks. ‘Wether you are inclined to put on your walking boots and pack your sleeping bag, or would rather stay in a luxury hut, this sure-footed and witty book reveals how the extraordinary act of walking can become the extraordinary.’

14.01.2022 Jo's happy place... a good book and a good latte, delivered by the good people at Coffee Culture Bowral Shuggie Bain won the Booker Prize in 2020, and it's the debut novel by Glasgow-born Douglas Stuart. It's been described as a "blistering debut by a brilliant novelist with a powerful and important story to tell".

13.01.2022 @annabellangbein is New Zealand’s most popular #cookbook author - and she has some terrific stories to tell. Bella is both memoir and collection of signature recipes. Beautifully photographed and showcasing Annabel’s personal style and flair, it’s a lovely read. Tuck this one away for the #foodie in your life at Christmas... or treat yourself today!

12.01.2022 Bowral's own Jenny Rose-Innes gave us Australian Designers at Home only last November, and it quickly became a favourite. Her second book, British Designers at Home, is just as stunning. Teaming up once again with photographer Simon Griffith, Jenny invites us to meet 20 of Britain's most influential designers, and to peek inside their personal living spaces. "From the unexpected to that classic British look, this is an exciting look at modern British interiors." We can't wait to share it with you. #thebookshopbowralrecommends

12.01.2022 Jack West Jr is back... and there's only one more book to go after this! If you love this series, you're probably already on your way into the bookshop. If you haven't yet discovered Matthew Reilly and his thrilling, bestselling books - page-turners and ripping reads, all of them - then you have a treat ahead of you. Start with The Seven Ancient Wonders... you can thank us later.

11.01.2022 For #naidocweek we're celebrating Indigenous story-telling with an Australian classic and a new collection of essays, stories, poems and artworks from First Women. Both celebrate strength and resilience - and they're both terrific reads. #naidoc2020

09.01.2022 Look who rocked up to the bookshop... proving he’s still a working class man, @jimmybarnesofficial was happy to help out around the shop, doing a bit of shelving and tidying up our window display. He even earned access to the back room, where he signed copies of his new memoir, Killing Time, available in store now.

08.01.2022 Brilliant playwright, debut author, Angus Fitszimons called by to sign his new book Senior Moments. ‘It’s hysterical !’

08.01.2022 Style icon India Hicks's third book is a "charming take on entertaining, featuring dreamy tablescapes, recipes, and enjoyable family anecdotes". India likes to use what she has on hand - although what Prince Charles's god-daughter has on hand might be slightly different from what you and I have lying around the house. Nevertheless, we like her very much: "Organised by meal, the book begins marvellously with the most important meal of the day: cocktail hour."

07.01.2022 We're celebrating the release of Barack Obama's A Promised Land with a #discount - it's our gift to you to mark this huge #publishing event. A Promised Land, long-awaited and sure to be widely read for years to come, retails at $65 and is on sale for $55. And Michelle Obama's fabulous book Becoming is on sale for $40 (normally $50). If you haven't read Becoming yet, now is the time!

07.01.2022 Who can resist a book and a comfy chair in a quiet, sunny corner? Not our Ell. Like many of the #booksellers, she was keen to return to Dungatar and the world of Tilly Dunnage. We can report that the characters are just as eccentric, and the humour just as black, as we remembered from The Dressmaker. "I'm loving the intrigue and emotions of it," Ell said. And the couture, dahhhling, of course. #sundaysorted

07.01.2022 Settling into #sundayreading with The Wild Silence, the sequel to Raynor Winn’s wistful and uplifting memoir The Salt Path. The Salt Path follows the story of Raynor and and Moth, her husband of thirty two years, who, on learning he has a degenerative brain disease and just days later finding themselves without a business or a home, impulsively decide to take a backpack and a tent and walk the Salt Path, a 630 mile coastal walk running from Somerset to Cornwall. The journe...y is spiked with drama, humour and a discovery of the regenerative power of nature. The Wild Silence continues the story of their life after homelessness... The Wild Silence is in-store now. The Salt Path was short-listed for the 2018 Costa biography award.

05.01.2022 There's not much better than a book that's shared around the family... Jane bought Stephen Fry's retelling of the Troy story for her teenage son, who knocked it over between Christmas and New Year's. The man of the house was next in line, and now it's Jane's turn. She reports that Fry writes just as he talks - easy, entertaining and enriching.

02.01.2022 Two very different books covering similar ground, and both recommended by customers. Tina has been telling friends and booksellers alike how much she enjoyed Breath - well-researched, well-written and compelling. Journalist James Nestor travelled widely to figure out how humans lost the ability to breathe correctly, why it matters, and how we can fix it for better health and happiness. And Diana enjoyed comedian Bill Bailey's collection of funny, meditative and thoughtful... essays. He suggests simplicity and clarity are key to happiness. "Whether it's whooping aloud while cycling through a pine forest, putting pen to paper, or immersing yourself in music, Bill's guide to happiness is an antidote to the frenetic whirl of modern life." We think the Bill Bailey will be a great pick for Christmas this year - it's already being touted as "the feelgood book of the year".

02.01.2022 If there's one thing our #booksellers love more than a long afternoon with a good novel, it's a big bowl of piping hot #pasta. Jo and Shannon could talk about pasta all day long - they often inspire lunchbox envy with their delicious leftovers. So Saturday Night Pasta prompted many oohs and aahs as it hit the shelves... the first half is a how-to guide to making your own pasta, and the second half a collection of tempting recipes. We particularly like the look of roast butternut pumpkin with burnt butter sage. And chicken and clove ragu. And Bloody Mary lamb... happy #fridayfeasting and #saturdaynightpasta

01.01.2022 A #saturdaystack of Australian authors... We know lots of you have been awaiting the new Monica McInerney. We're pleased to report that The Godmothers is a great big hug of a book that will fill your heart to bursting. We cannot wait to dip back into Rosalie Ham's world of Tilley Dunnage! The Dressmaker's Secret sounds simply delicious. Next on our #tbrpile... Sofie Laguna, author of The Choke and The Eye of the the Sheep (which won the Miles Franklin) gives us Infinite Splendour. We found it moving, compassionate, terrifying - and recommended. Marie wrote about Lucky's for #sundaysorted a few weeks ago. She said it was a fun read and that there's a lot to like about this affectionate Australian story about growing up in a noisy, complicated, loving family. And Di Morrissey! No words needed! We know you'll love this one as much as her other best-sellers. Happy weekend reading, #booklovers
