19.01.2022 Smoking hides + the perfect cup of tea + some poetry that's on topic from @davidjwhyte this week.. (see below) . . --------------------------------------------------- .... YOU DARKNESS . "You darkness from which I come, I love you more than all the fires that fence out the world, for the fire makes a circle for everyone so that no one sees you anymore. . . But darkness holds it all: the shape and the flame, the animal and myself, how it holds them, all powers, all sight- . . and it is possible: it's great strength is breaking into my body. . . 19.01.2022 While I haven't been able to run workshops I've still been busy here and there sending off tanning instructions, over the phone tutoring and supplying what tools and materials I can.. . . *Perhaps a silver lining is the additional time to spend on those tanning and leather crafting projects... .... . #Repost @beeentwined . "Little happy dance today receiving this beautiful piece in the mail Nothing beats isolation like new people and new handmade goodness. If you are into learning more about leather, tanning ect @thebushtannery is the man. I will definitely be putting some of his workshops on my list of things to do " . . . *Single handled scraper made by my friend Jeremy. . #tanning #scrapers #supportlocal #traditionaltanning #diy #hometanner See more

16.01.2022 For 3 months I have tended to this culled Kangaroo skin, stirring, increasing the strength of the wattle bark brew... Cutting, checking absorption of the tannins.. and now finally it is ready... . . *You can see some videos in my Story feed on checking the skin to know when it's ready .... . **I also have a 2 minute bark tanning video on YouTube that you can also watch to get an idea of the processes involved in making your own homemade leathers . . Next step: Softening and oiling up the leather ready for crafting. . . Any questions about the process or even tips from other experienced tanners are welcome below. . . 14.01.2022 Shoulder bag inspired by the Lake Bolac Eel festival... (Kuyang Lapakira - Meaning 'Plenty Eels') . -------------------------------------------------- . The bag is a culmination of various animals found in the region, both native, domesticated and feral (Short finned eel, Eastern Grey Kangaroo, lamb, and feral goat).... . . *I was invited by coincidence in 2018 at the last festival to teach the public how to make leather from what would have otherwise been discarded eel skins. Neil Murray was on the barbecue cooking eels and I was using those skins to teach eel leather tanning. . **Most of the skins I use are from sources that would otherwise be considered waste i.e culled kangaroos, hunted ferals, food byproducts. . . . Using only natural tanning methods and hand tools the bag will be donated to the @lakebolaceelfestival ART AUCTION on the 20th of March in Lake Bolac with 100% of the proceeds going towards supporting our traditional owners/ first peoples. . . Tickets are limited and there's some incredible art work and people that gather at this art auction! So book early. The main event is the following day and I suggest having a look at their facebook/instagram page for more info!! Live music workshops, talks, art and plenty of eels! . . I'll be teaching eel leather tanning again... And it's free with your ticket . . Here's a short blurb from the event booking page: . . "Held every two years in late March or early April, the timing reflects the season when Shortfinned Eels traditionally begin their migration to the sea to spawn and when indigenous people from surrounding areas gathered around the shores of Lake Bolac and along the Salt Creek to harvest the eels, trade and hold ceremonies." . . Put it in your calendar and I'll see you there! . . 14.01.2022 SLOW FASHION.. Hand carved crochet hooks + wool/ alpaca grown and milled locally (thanks @great_ocean_road_mill) + bark tanned roo for the label + sewing using brain tanned lamb (thanks @yan.yan.gurt.west.farm for the skin) and happy beautiful owner @ammie.jackson.7 ... Just in time for a winter here on the South West Coast in the Otways . . FYI: first time having a go at crocheting a cable style beanie (yes I watched a YouTube video for that! Can't remember t...he name of the crafter - I'll comment her YouTube below). I'm still learning the realm of crochet but really happy with this result. . . Let me know your thoughts below! . . **KEEP READING IF YOU'RE A BIT OF A CRAFT NERD . . This process is beautifully explained by a Japanese folk craft philosopher by the name of Soetsu Yanagi, in a book I'm reading at the moment called "The Beauty of Everyday Things" (highly recommend reading): . . "Particular attention should be paid to the materials used, for good craftsmanship is built on natural foundations, and nature assures the material's quality. .... Rather than the craft object finding the most suitable material, it can be said that the material finds the right object. .... Folk crafts are invariably the product of a local environment.. . *This beanie was made almost solely using materials within a 100km radius (or in some cases even closer to where I live.) . . It is these resources, the gift of nature, that are the veritable mother of craft-work. The natural environment, raw materials, and production, these three are inseparable. When they are as one, the resultant craftwares will be natural and free flowing, for they are the products of nature." . (p. 40 from the book ) . . What more can I say? These crossovers of craft really get me excited for more collaborations and exploring local sustainable natural resources. . . 14.01.2022 Custom leather boots collaboration with the awesome team at @solepurposeuralla .. . . Impressed with the final result and judging by the screen shot (see other photo), the owner was as well. .... . Amazing to see the diverse use of feral animal pelts such as rabbits in the textile process. These furs would otherwise go to waste as they are killed anyway as part of pest control. . . Who wants a pair? (I'm thinking I'll need to put in an order myself). . . Maybe with fox fur? Or some other feral fur trim? . . Either way I suggest going and following the legends @solepurposeuralla . . 09.01.2022 Within seconds of this big black billy goat floor rug coming out of the frame... . . I'm thinking it's the human equivalent of diving into a bed with fresh sheets....mmm... That stale billy goat smell.... Seems Pip approves .... . . This thick floor rug is destined for the front of the fireplace in preparation for winter where I'm sure the animals will be tucked up (it gets considerably cold and wet compared to most parts of Australia here in the Otways - the southern part of the country). . . Hope everyone is warm and prepared coming into winter and those coming out of winter were as well!! Especially my friends in Canada and the states!! . . Josh . . *Note: The final smoking process for completing the tanning and hand washing will remove the last of the odours. They end up smelling really nice and are a great addition to any room for warmth. I highly recommend making your own fur rugs this time of year (Southern hemisphere of course). . . **Thanks for sharing your cute dog @ammie.jackson.7 . . #dogapproved #staffy #staffylove #newbed #furskins #floor #rug #feralgoat #feralgoatsofaustralia #traditionaltanning #hometanner #oiltanning #doityourself #staywarm #thiswinter See more

05.01.2022 Reduce....Reuse.... Recycle.... . Well in this case we've given these boots another life for Jesse Robertson @tantric_farmer who visited recently over New Years to my home workshop in the Otways, Deans Marsh. . ........................................................................ . Old leather boots can be brought back to life with a bit of patience, some basic leather crafting tools, glue and of course a good polish with an all natural leather balm. . . One of the ways that genuine leather boots/ items disintegrate is through not oiling/ balming them enough. . . In this case Jesse bought these boots second hand at an Op Shop already in this condition. They're beautiful and obviously crafted with skill. The needed re-stitching in parts, lots of re glueing and a lot of balming and polishing. . . If your leathers are cracking or feel dried/ scuffed.... It's time for a good balming . . **I'll be making a limited batch of balms in the coming weeks for those wanting to use an all natural and locally sourced leather balm that also works great as a lip balm and skin conditioner. I'll keep you posted on that. . . Hope you find this post inspiring to get more out of your leather goods, . . . Sending you skintegrity, . . 04.01.2022 Although all my workshops and events have been postponed, I am soo grateful for the slowing down.. . . How are other people finding the slow down? .... . Last night as the sun set across the dam on the property where I live in rural Victoria, (Australia near the Otways), my two new housemates and I sat by the fire as the stars came out and we smoked this fur skin rug to go inside for winter. . . It was a beautiful ritual to perform together under the new moon . Perhaps an experience that wouldn't have happened if we weren't forced to be still..... To take a break from all the 'Busi-ness' . . . I hope to work on more tanning and leathercrafting projects at home throughout the self quarantine period and look forward to running more workshops and attending events in the future to share these skills again with you all soon. . . *People have suggested online videos, however I'm taking the time to spend as much free time as possible away from screens. . . **I have however, got my workshop notes which I am happy to email for a small fee in return (let me know if you'd like a copy) . . All the best throughout your self quarantine wherever you are! Stay safe and please for everyone's sake stay home unless you absolutely have to go out. . . With gratitude and care, . . 04.01.2022 Perfect timing for winter approaching to get those leather boots waxed up with our all-in-one natural skin and leather balm . . *Thanks to Clay @theclayoftheearth and everyone who I've sent out packages to recently. 03.01.2022 I'm taking that as a big yes to the freshly tanned billy goat fur rug.... (if you listen closely with the sound on you can hear Pip snoring )... . . At first I didn't know what to do with this massive billy goat. However, the fireplace was looking pretty bare at the front and having a darker coloured floor rug meant that the animals and people's feet could be on it without worrying about it getting dirty (still need to hand wash it and air it out every so often). .... . The beauty with tanning your own animal skins is that you often don't know what they will become. Luckily you have hours of scraping, softening and smoking to contemplate such things.... (Hahaha!) . . Hope everyone is staying warm and enjoying the last of these autumn days . . Josh . . *If anyone else has pictures of their dogs asleep on fur skins in front of the fire message them through and I'll repost them in my story and tag you. . . #dogapproved #dogsonfurksins #feralgoat #feralgoatsofaustralia #wildhunted #organic #hometanner #traditionaltanning #allnatural #oiltanning #smoked #ethicaltextiles #billygoat #fur #fireplace #readyforwinter See more
