25.01.2022 How can I have the best birth possible? Of all the ways birth outcomes could be improved, continuous labour support seems like one of the most important and basic needs for birthing people. Providing labour support to birthing people is both risk-free and highly effective. Evidence shows that continuous support can DECREASE the risk of Cesarean by (39%), the use of medications for pain relief by (10%), and the risk of a low five minute Apgar score (by 38%). ... Labour support also INCREASES satisfaction (by 31%) and the chance of a spontaneous vaginal birth (by 15%). Continuous support may also shorten labour (by about 40 minutes) and decrease the use of Pitocin. Although continuous support can also be offered by birth partners, midwives, nurses, or even some physicians, research has shown that with some outcomes, doulas have a stronger effect than other types of support persons. As such, doulas should be viewed by both parents and providers as a valuable, evidence-based member of the birth care team. - Rebecca Dekker, PhD, RN, APRN of www.evidencebasedbirth.com Now booking November due date clients! 25.01.2022 Challenge accepted. Thank you so much for thinking of me @nataliewalton What could be more powerful than #WomenSupportingWomen. We need each others acceptance and support - in motherhood more than ever. @bridgetwoodphotography

24.01.2022 Homebirth When a woman gives birth she is both at her most vulnerable, beautiful & powerful. Still in awe of my client @reneevdarcy ‘s amazing homebirth. It’s rare these days to witness a completely undisturbed, physiological birth like this ... Was it just good luck? No. It took thorough preparation on her part. But she saw that power and claimed what was rightfully hers Her birthing power. Her power as a maternity care consumer, woman and mother. She knew what she wanted and claimed what was rightfully hers. We were all in awe of her And the presence of her two year old son Zephyr throughout the labour and birth was simply divine! He supported her with sweet kisses, fanning her face and his giggles and smiles just added to the love filled, natural atmosphere This type of care and experience is every woman’s birthright So proud and in awe of you Renee. Thank you for letting me share some of the beautiful pics I took. #homebirth #birthwithoutfear #empoweredbirth #evidencebasedcare #siblingsatbirth #birthdoula #birthsupport #consciousbirthpreparation #physiologicalbirth #supportingallbirthchoices #postpartumsupport #continuouscare #byronbaybirth #byronbaydoula #goldcoastdoula #thebyrondoula @ Tweed Heads, New South Wales

23.01.2022 The most difficult part of birth is the first year afterwards. It is the year of travail when the soul of a woman must birth the mother inside her. The emotional labour pains of becoming a mother are far greater than the physical pangs of birth; these are the growing surges of your heart as it pushes out selfishness and fear and makes room for sacrifice and love. It is a private and silent birth of the soul, but it is no less holy than the event of childbirth, perha...ps it is even more sacred. @joykusek via @droscarserrallach Muse @reneevdarcy with her beautiful Zephyr and baby Blue Valentine (who’s now 7 days old!) still in her belly #4thtrimester #matrescence #motherhood #riteofpassage #transformation #doula #pregnancy #birth #laboursupport #postpartumsupport #continuouscare #byronbaybirth #byronbaydoula #goldcoastdoula #thebyrondoula See more

21.01.2022 So touched by this student midwife's thoughts...

15.01.2022 There are 1001 ways to disturb a birth. Language, light, adrenaline, not enough warmth, ’coaching’, ‘helping’, any instruments/ words/ people that make the labouring mother feel like she’s being ‘observed’ or suggest she can’t give birth in her own power (without the expertise and energy of others). It’s easy to make a birth difficult. One of the greatest disturbances at birth though would be mother-baby separation and the interference within the first 3 minutes after bir...th. Think cord-clamping for example: even if you ‘delay’ it, meaning the cord will be cut once it has completely stopped pulsating (which is usually within 90 seconds) there is still a sense of ‘rush’ around the cord n e e d i n g to be cut when really the most important thing is for the mother to hold, see and smell her baby without ANYONE interrupting this precious moment. It’s not only emotionally and energetically important but in fact is mother nature’s way of ensuring mum will have PEAK oxytocin levels (higher than during birth when the baby’s head crowns) so that her uterus contracts again to shed the placenta so she doesn’t keep bleeding or goes on to develop a postpartum hemorrhage. What could be more important than this? Anything that brings the mother back to ‘reality’ (a phone ringing, people talking or asking her questions) will significantly lower the oxytocin she releases and in fact make this vulnerable after birth-phase less safe. Even once the placenta is born there is often an urge to be ‘active’ amongst people present in the birth room: the baby ‘needs’ to be weighed, measured, checked, tested, photographed. But again, all the mother and baby n e e d right now is to stay safe and for this they need each other and no one disturbing them. If the baby has a chance to do the breast-crawl in this first golden hour there are usually no troubles breastfeeding later down the road. So The mother needs her baby and the baby needs its mother Precious pic @ilsa_whk #doula #bodyguard #michelodent #lilianalammers #birthpioneers #birthwithoutfear #antenatalprep #birthdoula #birthsupport #continuouscare #byronbaydoula #thebyrondoula See more

11.01.2022 Who needs a doula? Any birthing mother who would like acceptance and support throughout her pregnancy, birth and postpartum. One of my teachers Dr Michel Odent (world leading obstetrician and founder of the Primal Health Research Centre) sums it up this way: "In the time surrounding birth, women need to feel secure. They need the sort of protection that is provided by the presence of a mother. But for many reasons special to our time, many women cannot rely on their own m...other and the father of the baby cannot also be a mother figure. That is why they need a doula." Yes doulas have also been shown to lower interventions (Epidural rates by 60%, Cesareans by 50%, length of labour by 25%, Pitocin usage by 40%) but my main focus is on the birthing couple and their emotional and physical wellbeing. Ensuring that this very special time in their life receives the attention and loving preparation it deserves. Ensuring that your partner can be the best possible help throughout this journey. Ensuring that the birthing mother is in her most optimal physical/ emotional/ mental state as she meets her baby. With a doula you’re receiving personalised support meaning you only receive what is most helpful and useful for you and your partner. That is why you get a lot more out of working with me for example than you would if you’d only attend an antenatal class. This is a great start but personalised care can take you so much further. Someone who knows you well can simply provide better care I look after mums in the most vulnerable moment of their life while simultaneously celebrating their strength and birthing power What are your questions about working with a doula? 11.01.2022 How to prevent a primary Cesarean 34% of Cesareans are performed due to ‘labour dystocia’ (= lack of progress/ descent/ dilation or difficult labour)*. These are common scenarios: Baby is floating high above the pelvic inlet and not engaging in spite of regular contractions. Or baby might descend into pelvis but labour stalls once baby has reached a certain level (such as midpelvis or pelvic outlet) due to poor flexion of the head or malposition for example. A labourin...g mother might even fully dilate but if baby is not coming down into or through the pelvis a Cesarean becomes necessary. There is no magic formula for all women but MOST women will save themselves many hours/ days in labour (and much pain!) by receiving personalised chiropractic care in pregnancy and learning exercises and techniques to encourage optimal fetal positioning (Spinning Babies) so that there is a higher chance that baby engages well. (If you’ve had any accidents or trauma around the pelvic region/ lower back/ pelvic floor this is especially important for you to know.) Dietary and lifestyle choices also play a big role in avoiding labour dystocia as well as choosing a care-provider who offers evidence-based and women-centred care that is not only hands-on and continuous, think midwife who knows you well and is there for you throughout your entire pregnancy, birth and postpartum journey (we’re not meant to give birth with strangers!), but also skilled in facilitating physiological birth. This is not the same as having a ‘minimising risks’ approach which is largely based on fear (Adrenalin/ stress/ fear inhibits normal labour and birth!) Preventing a primary Cesarean is important but it’s also vital for you to know that there is so much we can do to make a NECESSARY Cesarean beautiful and family-centred. I’m here to support you fully- however labour unfolds. 08.01.2022 How we treat women during pregnancy, birth and early motherhood is a direct reflection of how emancipated our society really is. How health-care systems and providers treat women as they become mothers should be the unifying feminist battle of our time. Our responisbility to protect the motherbaby continuum is so great during this very vulnerable time. ... We don’t just need to be protected though we also want to be acknowledged and honoured in our power to bring life forth. Birth is a time of greatest vulnerability AND power so choosing your care provider and birth team carefully is key. #humanrightsinchildbirth #choicesinchildbirth #womenofcolor #maternitycare #doula #virtualsupport #byronbaybirth #byronbaydoula #thebyrondoula
