18.01.2022 [5 WAYS TO GET FASTER] _ Every runner on the planet aspires to get faster _ Here are 5 tips that may help get faster ... _ 1 Strength training has been proven to improve running performance & reduce the risk of running related injury. There are numerous ways to incorporate strength work-the key is to simply make a start (even if small!) . 2 Research suggest that recreationally competitive runners improve most rapidly when they run more slowly in training more often than not. Most runners would acknowledge that they tend to run their recovery or steady runs faster than what they intended. This tendency to run what should be an easy pace run at a moderate pace is most likely hindering the progress of many runners. By adopting an 80/20 approach (80% training time steady & slow, 20% above anaerobic threshold) performance gains may be made . 3 Weight is the enemy of speed. Running economy reduces with heavier footwear. A runner may expend 1% more aerobic energy for every 100g of shoe weight (eg 0.83s per mile of running) . 4 A running friend of mine used to say: ‘if you want to be a better runner-run more’. Simple truth! Most recreational miles can continue to improve if they simply clock more miles (keeping 2 in mind). 17.01.2022 Running up hills is hard! Most runners dread when hills are on the program. Don't worry, the Running group session this afternoon will only be including shorter Hill Sprints ... the pain will be short lived! However, the benefits of hill sprints/ running up hill can improve your running in more ways than you realise: - They are a great way to strengthen running specific muscles (which lead to improved stride length and economy). - Improve neuromuscular coordination... - They are speed-work in disguise :) Some Key Technique Tips for Running Hills: - Try to increase your cadence (fast feet) - Don't excessively lean from waist (stand tall) - Generate power from your hips and calf's Warm up from Dickson Ovals @6:00pm, we will jog over (approx 1.5k) to the base of Mount Ainsle (Car park - Corner Phillip Avenue and Kellaway street).
