25.01.2022 Diesel putting his new skills into practice #brisbanedogsofinstagram #boardandtrain #dogtraining #staffylove
25.01.2022 ' , ' ! One of the most common mistakes that we see people make with their dogs is giving them too much freedom too early. Assuming that their puppy or newly adopted rescue dog knows what is expected of them. But what is right and wrong is determined by our human world and does not make any sense to your dog so we have to teach them. Giving them too much freedom without supervision means they have ample opportunities to practice the 'wrong' behaviours rather than learn good habits from the start. When you can't supervise, putting your puppy in a safe area where they can't get themselves into trouble helps prevent bad habits. And while you spend time with them you can teach them how to navigate our confusing world appropriately and set them up for a successful life as your best companion!
24.01.2022 - & The gorgeous Esmee is staying with us for a Board & Train to address some resource guarding behaviour around other dogs when food is involved. She has made great progress and is learning to wait her turn for food while also polishing up on a few training skills. Esmee is an energetic bundle and has an amazing work ethic paired with a great training foundation already in place. Being a typical Labrador food means the world to her so we just need to change her mindset a little so she does not feel the need to guard any food. What a good girl you are Esmee and such a pleasure to work with :)
24.01.2022 ' This young boy is a typical excitable Staffy who wants to say hi to everyone and everything. Learning to ignore the distractions and concentrate on the work is hard for him but he is making amazing progress and is a fast learner. Stay tuned to see this boy develop into a fantastic young dog :)
24.01.2022 Say hi to Ruffy Ruffy is fast tracking his training progress with a Board & Train stay. After only a few days he has already mastered his crate training, loose leash walking with low distractions and is nailing some important foundations of place training and basic obedience.... We have also started introducing Ruffy to Clicker Training to help him learn how to learn. Learning to offer behaviours and problem solve makes a huge difference to any dog and especially dogs that are a little bit nervous. Can't wait to show his progress as he continues his learning journey and is becoming the best version of himself
20.01.2022 When you're gorgeous and you know it! Young German Shepherd Luca has worked through a few private lessons and is coming along in leaps and bounds. Such a fun dog with a great temperament and committed owners who put in the work to help him be the best dog he can be. #familydog #dogtrainingisfun #germanshepherd #trainyourdog #headtilt
20.01.2022 Good boy Diesel for ignoring those chicken bones on the floor! Diesel is staying with us for an in-home Board & Train to kick some training goals. Here he is working on keeping focused in busy places like shop fronts etc. This is his first week and he is coming along in leaps and bounds. Such a clever cookie!
19.01.2022 Socialisation means exposure, not necessarily interaction! Many people feel a little unsure about how to correcly socialise their puppy or dog. In an attempt to create the perfect friendly and well socialised dog, many people try and let their pup meet every dog and person they meet.... Unfortunately, many owners that we see in our consults recall incidents of their dog having a negative experience as a young dog. Especially during the critical period of your puppy, this can have a lasting impact or at least be a major setback. Our advice? Quality over Quantity!! Carefully chosing very positive experiences with select dogs and people will be much more beneficial than random meetings while out on walks. Effective socialisation also means teaching your pup how to be calm and neutral in new enviroments and around other dogs and people. Socialisation does not have to mean interaction! Sit down for a while and just watch the world go past together with your dog! You being calm and neutral helps your dog to get into the same mindset. Be creative about new environments and situations that you can safely expose your pup to: Traffic, noises, different surfaces, kids on scooters, etc. Your imagination is the limit!
19.01.2022 Evie is making sure she is adhering to social distancing rules in the lift #training #sitandstay #socialisationtraining #assistancedogs #covidsafe
19.01.2022 Working on car reactivity with the gorgeous Evie. She is a clever little thing and is learning fast that there are times when it's ok to kick into drive and chase and play hard but around a busy road is not the time and the place. Instead she's putting her busy mind to good use and learning to stay focused and engaged while heeling and working. Good girl @evie.the.ad ! #bordercolliesofinstagram #boardandtrain #dogtrainingisfun #cleverpuppy #smartandgoodlooking #pupoftheday
18.01.2022 Here is something sweet and chocolate to brighten up your morning Lovely girl Esmee is staying with us for a two week Board & Train.
18.01.2022 Cuteness overload Say hi to Evie who is staying with us for a Board & Train! Evie is settling in well and is such a clever cookie. I'm keen to watch her progress over the next couple of weeks. #cutenessoverload #cutie #dogtraining #boardandtrain #ohmyheart
17.01.2022 - & Very proud of this boy! This young fella is working on his general obedience as well as some assistance dog foundations and is doing so well. He is really coming into his own and loves learning new things.
17.01.2022 A bit of confidence building with Evie. Practicing body awareness, balance and working on different surfaces. Good girl Evie! #goodpuppy #confidenceiskey #bordercolliesofinstagram #dogtrainingislife
17.01.2022 Does your dog try to chase fast moving objects like skateboards, motorcycles etc? This is not uncommon for dogs with higher levels of prey drive. But how can we expect a dog to remain composed around their triggers if they cannot show impulse control in a controlled environment while practicing?... Learning the rules of the game is a great way to teach your dog lots of different concepts. Like maintaining a clear head when they really want to chase something. Diesel has learnt to show impulse control around toys. He can stay calm & focused in a down or sit until he hears his release word because he knows that is his all clear to start a great game. The key is and for your dog. How does this help in real life? Diesel found the noise and fast movement of skateboards really triggering and he really really wanted to chase after them. Learning impulse control has greatly helped him and (with some added desensitisation work at the skatepark) he can now remain calm and composed and watch all the skateboards zip around without loosing his cool.
17.01.2022 Yes, it has been a little quiet on this page. Why? We have been incredibly busy helping as many dogs and owners as possible so there has been little time to post here. This gorgeous boy is too cute not to share! Beau did incredibly well in his first lesson working on his loose leash walking skills and dog reactivity. Clear communication is something that I believe to be the foundation of good dog training and it is always beautiful to watch the transformation when the dog sta...rts to tune into the owner and they develop a shared training language! Such a clever boy and a very dedicated owner. With a little bit of guidance they are well on their way to smashing goals
16.01.2022 Diesel has learnt to retrieve an object to my hand Don't you just love his bouncy happy attitude? #brisbanedogsofinstagram #boardandtrain #staffylove #dogtraining
16.01.2022 Evie learning to take & hold an object While we focus a lot of our time on exposing Evie to traffic and working on calm focus, she is also learning lots of new skills. I like young dogs to learn lots of different foundation skills that are then easy to piece together into a specific task.... #dogtraining #clickertraining #shapingbehavior #assistancedog #cleverpuppy #dogtrainingvideo #bordercollie #boardandtrain
16.01.2022 Little Miss Freya. Too cute for words
15.01.2022 Handsome German Shepherd George completed his first lesson working on dog reactivity. Hats off to this amazing team for getting out of their comfort zone and making such great progress in their first lesson! George had a previous incident getting attacked by off leash dogs rushing out of a gate which has left him a little unnerved and he started barking and lunging at dogs even when they were still a long distance away. At the end of the first lesson he was quite happy to sit... calmly not far from helper dog Darwin and relax instead of react. Good boy George! Practicing encounters with other dogs in a controlled and safe environment can be a huge confidence booster not only for your dog but also for you. Can't wait to see this team progress even further. They already have a great connection and I am sure they will smash their training goals!
15.01.2022 Ruffy out and about practicing new skills in real life settings. Taking time and just watching the world go by is so important for dogs that are a bit unsure about the world around them.
15.01.2022 Puppies Puppies and some more Puppies These are just some of the super cute puppies that we had the pleasure of meeting and working with last week. As a trainer it is always a privilege to guide new puppy owners on how to successfully navigate puppyhood. Laying the foundation for a puppy to mature into a confident and well mannered dog is an important task with a big responsibility that we do not take lightly.... The puppies we worked with where between 8 and 14 weeks old and we covered lots of different topics. Socialisation, toilet training, walking on lead, crate training, building confidence, preventing separation anxiety and teaching basic obedience are just some of the topics that new puppy owners need to get their head around and we were happy to provide guidance. Tired puppies and happy owners after a productive lesson were a great way to finish up the week.
15.01.2022 Happy International Dog Day from The Canine Link team!
14.01.2022 Opportunities for training are everywhere! Practicing skills and basic commands in new environments is key to a well behaved dog that you can take anywhere. Rather than simply walking you dog, incorporate some fun games and obedience commands. This will help create value for you and the interaction with you rather than your dog only finding value in sniffing, other dogs, etc.... Sit stays are one of my favourite skills as it is a great tool for getting nice photos. Here are Darwin and Logan showing Board & Train dog Ruffy how it's done. Ruffy can easily hold an extended sit or down stay now. From a dog that couldn't even focus in his own backyard to working nicely in new and unfamiliar environments in less than 3 weeks. So proud of you Ruffy!
14.01.2022 ? Dogs were not born to sit in a backyard all day and eat out of a bowl twice a day! All dogs need a certain extent of biologically fulfilling activities in their life that allow them to express their natural drives. The minimum amount varies for individual dogs and breeds and also over a dog's life stages.... Do you know what the purpose of your dog's breed(s) is? Ignoring a dog's genetic traits can lead to problematic behaviours. A cattle dog that is nipping, a guarding and barking German Shepherd or a Border Collie that is herding anything? These are all natural traits that have no or little outlet in the modern world that our dogs mostly live in. Providing structured outlets can help. Often it does not even take much. Enriching activities that provide biological fulfillment for your dog are plenty. Sniffing, chewing a crunchy bone, physical exercise, social interactions, toy play, training etc are just some examples. What activities are you doing with your dogs to provide enrichment & biological fulfillment?
12.01.2022 Lesson snapshot Beau showing off his new-found confidence in the presence of other dogs on walks and practicing new obedience skills. Good boy Beau!
10.01.2022 ' ' ? Do you feed Kibble or Raw? Fresh food diets are great but kibble can be oh so convenient. My dogs get a mix or we alternate for the best of both worlds.... At times they may get almost entirely fresh. When life gets busy or we are travelling a lot, kibble is a super convenient option. Pre-made raw patties are also great and don't take much effort to prepare. Or I might feed kibble supplemented with some fresh additions. Examples are sardines, blended veggies, freeze dried green tripe, mince, eggs, organs, etc. Adding a few fresh ingredients can boost your dog's nutrition intake and a little bit of fresh is better than none. What do you feed your dogs?
10.01.2022 Meet Zera the Japanese Spitz Zera was scared of the doggy door and did not even want to go anywhere near it. It took a bit of patience but at the end of her first lesson Zera managed to overcome her fear and go through the doggy door even with the flap down. Good girl Zera!

09.01.2022 Shoutout to the talented Kate at Smile and Wag Pet Photography. I recently did a photo shoot with Kate of both my dogs and it was so much fun! Kate is great with dogs and adapted to their individual personalities while capturing them in both stills and action shots. Can't wait to see all the amazing photos. If you want some great photos of your dogs, get in touch with Smile & Wag
09.01.2022 Ruffy Board & Train update It has been 1.5 weeks and Ruffy has come a long way already! Initially we focus on teaching new skills in a low distraction environment.... As the dog becomes more and more competent we take those skills on the road and practice in new environments with increasing amounts of distraction. Because who wouldn't want a dog that you can take anywhere and that will listen even under heavy distraction?
06.01.2022 When you're a rescue dog and were given a second chance in life I love watching dogs being dogs and just having a great time...
06.01.2022 Play is a powerful way to build your relationship with your dog. It lets you harness your dog's enthusiasm and power for obedience. We can use it as a powerful reward for obedience behaviours. However, sometimes play should just be play. Especially when you are only starting out playing with your dog. When training, we often have a goal in mind that we want to achieve and that we focus on.... ! The play has to be fulfilling for your dog. Don't just toss a toy and call it a game. Bring your energy and movement into the game and your dog will love it even more. But it is not all toys. Using food in play is just as powerful. Dogs are hardwired to want to chase food. They were not born to eat out of a bowl so letting them chase food that you are moving around or tossing is naturally fulfilling for dogs. If your dog has never done this before it will take some time for them to get used to it. As your game becomes more powerful, you can start asking for simple behaviours in between. Start simple with sits and drops or something your dog knows well and go from there. And as always, remember to have fun with your dog
06.01.2022 Confidence building is so important!
05.01.2022 Evie - Working on focus & calmness around traffic during her #boardandtrain This lovely girl is coming along in leaps and bounds. The sound of a pedestrian crossing used to kick her into overdrive. Thanks to lots of desensitisation (puppy sound apps are an amazing tool!!) she has improved massively and is able to focus much better. Being able to stay focused on the job is such an important skill for an assistance dog. When you have your dog's focus, everything else is much ea...sier #focus #heeling #pupoftheday #desensitization #assistancedog #foundations #dogtrainingislife #cutenessoverload
04.01.2022 Is your dog reactive? Reactivity is a reflection of your dog feeling uncertain about a situation. Putting on a reactive display makes your dog feel like they can make the stressor go away - which is exactly what a reactive dog wants. So in their mind it is a highly effective way of dealing with an uncomfortable situation and soon they go on auto-pilot and react straight away. A confident dog however does not feel the need to make themselves heard but can be calm and neutral.... Building confidence is an important part of dealing with reactivity. Showing a dog that being calm and seeking the owner's guidance is what makes the stressor go away is empowering for the dog and gives them an alternative to acting out. Which in turn gives the owner a much needed confidence boost!
04.01.2022 Absolutely love the beautiful photos of my dogs from our shoot with Smile & Wag Pet Photography Thanks Kate!

02.01.2022 ! What amazing progress these two have already made! We caught up for our third session working on dog reactivity and obedience under distraction.... Each lesson we have seen progress but wow, today I was definitely impressed. This time we revisited some basics before practicing recalls on the long line in the presence of other dogs. Even an off leash dog racing over and coming within 5 meters did not set Bear off and after a brief moment of excitement he regained focus straight away. This photo really shows the beautiful relationship that Leah and Bear have already developed only a few months after Bear's adoption. Keep up the good work and we can't wait to see more of your achievements!
02.01.2022 Say hi to Pepper Pepper is a rescue dog who is quite timid and fearful of this big new world out there. But she was super lucky and found herself a very caring home with dedicated owners willing to do whatever needed to help her on her path. Pepper currently is staying in house with us for a Board & Train to work on her confidence and overcoming some of her fears. Go Pepper! #dogtraining #brisbanedogsofinsta #brisbanedogsofinstagram #rescuedogsofinstagram #rescuepup
02.01.2022 The 3 Musketeers Train hard & play hard
02.01.2022 George says Treats are Yum He was rocking place training and being a champion around various other dogs during his lesson. We also practiced how to calmly pass other dogs on walks. And thanks to a Groom & Deshed at Canine Transformation before his lesson he looked extra handsome and was so soft and fluffy
01.01.2022 Couldn't agree more!
01.01.2022 Does your dog bolt through doors? Some training skills are for your dog's . Waiting at the front door is definitely one of those! An open front door should not be an invitation for your dog to run outside! That's why it is important for every dog to learn to wait until they are released to go through the door. I want the dog to stop automatically, rather than having a 'Wait' command. The open door becomes the cue to wait. That means that even when a guest or someone els...e opens the door, the dog will still wait without specifically being told to do so. It is a great skill for any dog to have. It allows you to go to your mailbox or your car if you just want to quickly get something and your dogs will wait inside until you release them through the doorway. And the best part? These skills take no extra time out of your schedule if you just incorporte them into your daily lifestyle and interactions with your dog.
