25.01.2022 Bite-sized Reading Time review of 'Scary Bird' by Michel Streich (published by Scholastic Australia): 'When a new bird arrives in the aviary, he upsets the status quo. This bird is very different from the rest. He looks different. He chirps a different language. The other birds are afraid and angry. However, one curious bird takes the time to get to know Scary Bird and the flock eventually discover that he has interesting qualities to share.' 25.01.2022 Bite-sized Reading Time review of 'The Heartsong of Wonder Quinn' by Kate Gordon (published by University of Queensland Press): 'Wonder Quinn lives in a school called Direleafe Hall. Every year she longs to make friends and each year she is disappointed. No-one ever seems to see her and even the teachers ignore her. Then a new student arrives and immediately sits next to Wonder and asks to be her friend. Why is it that Mabel can see Wonder when no-one else can? This is a sc...hool story with a difference, exploring friendship and grief in a delightful, sometimes even whimsical manner. The ending brings the story full circle, and the secret of Wonder’s past is revealed.' 22.01.2022 Bite-sized Reading Time review of 'Who Am I?' by Philip Bunting Scholastic Australia: 'Buntings books are instantly recognisable because of their delicious lolly-shop aesthetic. His illustrations are cartoonish and flippant with bright colours, wide eyes, and tongue in cheek cheekiness but his messages are smart and strong. In his nonfiction, Bunting explores lifes big questions in a way that is humorous and insightful. His writing is easy to understand but never condescending. He seems to strike a perfect balancing between learning and laughing.' 22.01.2022 Bite-sized Reading Time review of The Erasure Initiative by Lili Wilkinson (published by Allen & Unwin). A gripping thriller that had me hooked from page one. I found myself trying to figure out who they were and how they got there, just like the characters themselves. Personally, I loved the depth of the characters and how realistic their actions seemed. Instead of a society of nomadic hunter gatherers Pascoe argues that ‘indigenous Australians lived in permanent structures, in large communities, built dams and wells, planted, irrigated and harvested seed and preserved and stored the surplus’ (p. 9). 07.01.2022 Bite-sized Reading Time review of 'School Rules Are Optional' by Alison Hart (Allen & Unwin Books). 'Everything about this book is just right for the target audience, kids aged 9 -13. It has heaps of humour, lots of relatable situations and it’s written is like a series of comedy skits, which mean it’s easy to pick it up, read a section and find a natural place to stop. It’s even works as a series of humourous short stories, but the magic is that they flow together nicely aro...und a bigger plot. The story has a satisfying ending, but one that will make younger readers want more as the language and humour is perfectly appropriate, with some challenging witticisms within a story that are easy to read.' 05.01.2022 Bite-sized Reading Time review of Who Am I? by Philip Bunting Scholastic Australia: Buntings books are instantly recognisable because of their delicious lolly-shop aesthetic. He seems to strike a perfect balancing between learning and laughing.
