16.01.2022 Today is my 30th #EnglishChannelversary!!!! Today Western Australia and me celebrate the 30th Anniversary of achieving the English Channel Solo crossing. On 27t...h August 1990, after a month of waiting it out, missing original window; the toughest Mother on planet earth, #MotherNature settled herself and I achieved an English Channel solo crossing; becoming the first West Australian and the 8th Aussie to achieve the Mount Everest of Marathon Swimming. Picture 1990. No GPS. No mobiles. No fax machines. No social media. My mentor #DesRenford wrote me a letter to help me prepare and sent the book #WindWavesandSunburn for motivation. I was a full-time school teacher at Swan Christian College and married to Peter Smith. (my former hubby paddled with me at every 4am morning and 3-5hr weekend Swan River training). There were no sponsorships or institute of sport scholarships. The school students conducted the #MoneyChain bringing in their #piggybank change and #lamingtondrives. Remember it was the era of #ChookRaffles. I had a dream and all of a sudden Western Australia was onboard. Gary Carvolth on 6PR was my number one fan and I cannot remember the gentleman's name from the Daily Newspaper (an afternoon newspaper that came out every week day) who dedicated a daily column to my English Channel project. Another supporter John Whitehead came up with the idea of a community fundraiser #CocktailsandDreams and between Gary Carvolth @6PR, The West Australian and The Daily newspapers whitegoods started to #falloffthebackofatruck. 500 Western Australians arrived on double decker party buses and packed into the #FremantleOverseasPassengerTerminal on one of those hot February evenings when the #FremantleDoctor decided to not arrive. All the drinks were donated however the cocktails did not arrive mixed so volunteers were in the kitchen making them in big 4 gallon rubbish bins. Out the door they went and sculled in no time. Blue Lagoon. Manhattan Midori. Channel Cointreau. Wine. Beer. @Aquaclub & City of Perth swim members volunteered as waiters and were swooned on by the thirsty Wild Wild Westerners!!! Donated finger food for the cocktail included party pies, chicken wings, quiches, hot wedges, chips, chicken nuggets. The volunteer family in the kitchen couldn't cook fast enough for the hungry crowd. $25,000 was raised that night and my English Channel dream was now breathing into a reality. Imagine returning from a 2hr morning sea session in Folkestone, England to the B&B for a cooked breakfast. The postman drops by for a cuppa tea with mail for me which is loads of good luck messages from West Australian primary school kids and their school projects on my English Channel solo swim. I still have them (somewhere). Next were the telegrams. I hadn't even started the swim yet! There is no solo in marathon swimming. And one of my favourite quotes I have penned is #LifeISaTEAMsport. So Happy English Channelversary @WesternAustralia. We did it!

16.01.2022 Facts are facts! Now ain’t that the truth... And nothing denies that Australian Chloe McCardel - Marathon Swimmer achieving her 35th solo crossing of the #Engli...shChannel is a fantastic feat... Even more an amazing feat during the #Covid19Pandemic when 100’s of Aussies aspiring to achieve their own #Everest the #ECSolo were denied exemption to leave Australian shores with our borders closed. Aussies are super proud of Chloe’s personal and solo achievements! #AussieAussieAussie stretching the Australian Bestever record for most solo EC crossings by an Australian to massive total of 35! Remember there is #noSOLOinMarathonSwimming there is no representing Australia for personal solo open water/ marathon swimming endeavours. there are no #WorldRecords in #MarathonSwimming despite the historical plethora of solo and relay achievements of legends in our great sport including Aussie Women’s powerhouse #AnnetteKillerman Englishman #MatthewWebb and American #GertrudeEderle and Inaugural Beijing 2008 Olympic10km Gold Medallist’s @LarissaIlchenko Maarten Van Der Weijden There are #guinessbookofworldrecords which you would need to apply for to qualify Just ask the #WorldOpenWaterSwimmingAssociation #MarathonSwimmingFederation FINA - Swimming Australia Australian Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame - @InternationalSwimmingHallofFame. So let’s stand with patriotic pride as our Aussie Anthem says.... Australians all let us rejoice.... Chloe’s incredible 5 solo crossings in 4 weeks. Incredible UK weather!!! Many marathon swimmers - like myself - dream about their impending EC swim for channel conditions like that. Congratulations to ALL solo and relays on achieving your English Channel feats. I applaud your commitment to your goal during unheard of times. Special mention to the thousands who have been unable to achieve their solo; who had to withdraw due to the weather (yep Mother Nature is the toughest Mother of all), (sea) sickness and /or injury. #LifeISaTEAMsport Thank you to the phenomenal Captains who lead the way for us. More Factual Notes: There is TWO accredited English Channel Swimming organisations! ie. @ChannelSwimmingAssociation #CSA and #CSPF @ChannelSwimmingPilotsSwimmingFederation Michael P. Read, MBE with 33 crossings logged by the CSA is the CSA King of the Channel (a title the CSA has used for many many decades). The indicates a Registered Trademark symbol and has some legal significance. Kevin Murphy with 34 crossings between the CSA and CS&PF has the most by any male and several have called him the King of the English Channel to avoid a trademark clash with the CSA.
