23.01.2022 ASCIA has published a document about coronavirus with information relevant to people with compromised immune systems. The document also contains several useful links to information. More is available on the ASCIA website.

21.01.2022 We understand that many people are concerned about the coronavirus pandemic especially if you have a child with a chronic illness. It is important to follow credible advice as we all try and navigate through this difficult issue.

20.01.2022 As many people may be aware there is currently a critical shortage of EpiPen Junior stock in Australia. Please see the link below to the ASCIA website for information on what to do until normal supplies resume. There is also a downloadable document to provide to early childhood centres and schools in case you do not have access to in date EpiPen Junior devices. We hope that this issue will be resolved over the coming weeks.

18.01.2022 Eczema & Food-Based Moisturisers If your baby suffers from eczema, you’ll know that moisturising is one of the most important parts of making their skin better. But which moisturiser should you use? There are so many available! Here at The Children’s Clinic, we strongly advise against the use of moisturisers which contain food products (e.g. oats, nut oils, coconut, etc.) in young babies with eczema. This is because the itchy, red, and inflamed skin you are moisturising ca...n let the foods in the moisturiser into the body and lead to food allergy down the track. Eczema is usually the first step of what we call ‘the allergic march’, and is often followed by food allergies, hay fever and asthma. That’s why it’s so important to look after eczema in young babies. If you’d like a comprehensive eczema management plan, one that you understand and that works for your child, make an appointment to see one of our experienced allergists today! #eczema #allergy #foodallergy

17.01.2022 When children start childcare they can gets lots of infections and recurrent fevers. Parents often worry that this means that their child’s immune system is ‘low’. But how many infections is too many? What are the signs that there might be something wrong with your child’s immune system? There’s lots of confusing information about the immune system out there. Fortunately, true deficiency of the immune system is very rare and most children get over this phase after a few mon...ths at child care. Some signs that warrant further investigation include needing admissions to hospital with infections, needing antibiotics to get better, unusual rashes or frequent high fevers. The ’10 Warning Signs of Primary Immunodeficiency’ is also a useful tool to decide if further attention is needed. If you think your child might be suffering from unusually frequent or severe infections It might be worth discussing it with one of our allergy and immunology specialists. We can guide you through the possibilities and, advise whether further tests are required. Make an appointment to see us today

16.01.2022 The Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care are developing clinical care standards for the management of anaphylaxis in health services. This is very important work that will lead to improved outcomes for those at risk. We are very proud that Drs Preeti Joshi and Katie Frith from The Children's Clinic are members of the topic working group for this project representing the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy. https://www.safetyandquality.gov.au/acute-anaphylaxis-clini

11.01.2022 EGG ALLERGY AND THE INFLUENZA VACCINE In these uncertain times, the Australian government is recommending that everyone over six months of age gets the influenza vaccine. Whilst the vaccine won’t protect you against COVID-19 (there’s still no vaccine for that), it will help to protect you, your loved ones and the healthcare system from a bad flu season. A lot of people worry about giving the flu vaccine to children or adults with egg allergy. In fact the flu vaccine can be s...afely given to people with egg allergy. While the influenza vaccine is grown in hen’s eggs, the amount of egg protein in the vaccine after processing is miniscule. For children with allergies (whether to egg or not) it is best to give the flu vaccine at your GP clinic where they can be observed for half an hour after vaccination. As with all vaccines there is a small risk that some people will be allergic to the flu vaccine and may react to it, but that does not appear to be specifically related to having egg allergy. The only people who should avoid the vaccine are those with anaphylaxis to the vaccine itself, or those with certain underlying diseases such as Guillain Barre Syndrome. If you would like to make an appointment at The Children’s Clinic please give us a call on 9369 5757. We’re working as normal during the COVID-19 crisis (with some extra precautions to keep everyone healthy) and in many cases we are also happy to see you via Telehealth, from the comfort of your own home! https://www.allergy.org.au//ASCIA_PCC_Egg_Allergy_and_Infl

06.01.2022 The Children's Clinic is committed to doing our bit to limit the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19). We have taken steps at the clinic to make sure it is as safe as possible for all our staff and patients. For those of you that have an upcoming appointment at the clinic you will receive an email beforehand with an attachment outlining the steps that we are taking at The Children's Clinic. Please remember that if you or your child are unwell with a new cough, fever or other ...respiratory symptoms please call the clinic BEFORE your appointment for advice about whether you should attend the clinic or not. At this time it is essential that everyone is following the Department of Health Guidelines with regards to personal hygiene and social distancing. We have all seen disturbing reports lately of packed beaches and people not taking the necessary precautions. We can only get on top of this virus if we all try and do the right thing and work together. https://www.health.gov.au//what-you-need-to-know-about-cor

06.01.2022 The National Allergy Strategy is developing minimum standards for the prevention and management of anaphylaxis (severe allergic reactions) in schools and childcare. To help us to develop these standards, we would like parents and staff working in schools and childcare services to complete a national online survey about how severe allergies should be managed in these settings. The survey will take approximately 15 minutes to complete and all information collected will be anony...mous we will not be able to identify the participant or the name of the school or childcare service. https://nationalallergystrategy.org.au/pro/school-and-ecec #NationalAllergyStrategy #allergy #schools See more
