25.01.2022 Toe point drill Do you struggle with your toe point? Following on from our last post, there are specific exercises you can do to help you with your lines . I will be posting some over the next few weeks (follow if you haven’t already! I will have drills for knee extension as well as those pointed but sickled feet) ... Today’s is the age old 1 Place a block (or rolled up towel) behind your knee. Grab a theraband and wrap it around the ball of your foot and over your toes. 2 Pull tension on the band while your foot is flexed. Your knee will be bent. Keep pulling tension on the band the entire time 3 As you squeeze your quad to straighten your knee completely, you will also point your toes. Try to think about pointing at your ankles as well as your toes. Think of contracting the muscles in the back of your calf, and bottom of your foot. When you squeeze your quad to straighten your knee also think of pushing the back of your knee into the block. 4 Hold at the top for a second, and then bend the knee and flex the foot again Repeat for 10 each side Do you want to know more, have a one on one, or get a consult for your injuries? 23.01.2022 How to not injure yourself .. ! There is unfortunately no way to guarantee this . There are methods that can reduce your likelihood of injuring yourself, however nothing is 100%. ... DESPITE THIS Listening to your body is a place to start! If something doesn’t feel right, if it hurts, if you’re tired and under recovered . We often injure ourselves when we are pushing right to our limits. Our body is telling us that it isn’t liking something, but we are determined and push through anyway. And I know it takes that push, determination and drive to reach your goals. But when you are walking that fine line, you need to be super conscious of listening to what your body is telling you. Don’t be afraid to step out of class, to take a break, to not try that trick again. It is your body! You only have one. to it Is your body trying to tell you something? 19.01.2022 Hip internal rotation - it helps with your splits and aerial tricks Not all things that help with your splits, need to look like a split. And not all things that help with your pole tricks need to be pole tricks ... Here is a good hip internal rotation drill that will help with your pike, front leg in your split, hip mobility in general as well as your pole/aerials tricks. Oh and it will help you to avoid that pinching feeling in your hips And as an added bonus, it will condition your core to stay engaged throughout your hip range of motion 1 Laying on your back with a block (or a rolled up towel or jumper etc) between your knees and a mini band, or theraband tied in a loop, around your ankles. Your knees should always keep a 90deg bend throughout the entire exercise. Only the angle at your hips will change. Your lower back should remain flat on the floor, and your core engaged. 2 Push your knees into the block (adduct your hips) whilst simultaneously pulling your ankles apart. This creates internal rotation in your hips. 3 Keeping all of this engagement, slowly and with control drop your feet towards the floor. Then lift your legs back up, bringing your knees towards your chest (but maintaining that 90deg bend in your knees). Only go within a hip range where you can maintain all the proper engagement as mentioned above. If you have any problems with your splits or aerials moves, or injuries in general for that matter! 17.01.2022 Middle splits drill Here is my final (for now) great drill for your strength and flexibility in your middle splits . For this drill you can use sliders, or if you don’t have any you can just wear socks on tiles or floorboards. Option: I used folded hand towels . ... 1 Start with your legs slightly apart (on sliders) and your hands planted on the ground. The starting distance between your legs will depend on your flexibility, however try to have them as close together as you comfortably can. 2 Engage your core to keep a neutral spine. Push the ground away from you in your arms and use your glutes to begin to slide your legs apart. Try to have most of the weight in your legs. 3 As you lower down you want to try and keep your shoulders inline with your bum. This may mean you have to bend your arms . If you feel like you aren’t strong enough to bend your arms - that’s okay. Just try to keep your lower back neutral and your core engaged Only go as far as you can control, and be able to get back. Make sure your core stays engaged and your lower back is neutral - don’t arch your back 3 Keep everything engaged and push your legs down into the ground, using your adductors (inner thigh muscles) to return to the start position. Think of closing your legs like scissors If your arms were bent, slowly straighten them as you bring your legs back together. Ensure you are always in control, and don’t go to your maximum to begin with. Build your strength first Do you have pain, or your body isn’t moving optimally? 11.01.2022 Do you want to have nice lines in all your tricks? Unfortunately there is no quick and easy answer , the best advice I have to you is repetition. And When you do something over and over your brain forges new neural pathways, or rewires existing ones, in order to help your body perform stronger, faster or more accurately ... This is . Every time you conduct a move or a movement pattern, your body begins to remember that and forge a neural pathway for it . Why is this relevant? Because every time you do a straddle invert for example, and you do it a bit lazy because you’re just trying to get up the pole to practice the new and wonderful trick you just learnt.. You’re telling your body and your brain to remember that dodgy invert . To remember and replicate those not quite straight knees, or those flexed feet . So the pattern of your body straddling your legs up with a micro bend, or with flexed feet, becomes muscle memory. It becomes natural I know that doing things with perfect lines the first time is hard if not impossible. So I’m not saying concentrate so much on your lines that you can’t do anything else. However, I am saying that once you can do a trick, however easy or irrelevant you find it.. practice it with good lines. Every single time you do it.
